Editorial Reviews
Review
The Soul Monger is a work of engaging and intelligent science fiction penned by author Matilda Scotney. Across the universe, past a gateway that seems far beyond the understanding of the simple people of Earth, Soul Mongers practiced their vile deeds, stealing humans - or Whole Souls - and transporting them to work as slaves in another dimension. Though they were stopped by the League as interplanetary negotiations and Earth came further into the future,an old enemy waited in the wings to wreak new havoc. Six people, stolen from their home world of Earth, take action against this evil, and what follows is a shocking, twisting tale of galactic politics, slavery, and war.
Author Matilda Scotney has created a complex work of epic science fiction which introduces its readers to exciting new concepts on a galactic scale, as well as a small band of rag-tag rebels who are on the rise to save an entire Empire. Both grand and intimate in its portrayal, the narration switches between deeply developed social and political systems, which have been well thought out, and intensely narrated character scenes where we meet our displaced heroes and discover what makes them tick. Scotney develops both areas well until the two blend effortlessly in the novel's second half, creating a story with rich depths, vivid imagery, and relatable situations despite the fantastic scale of the wars and conflicts raging on.
Overall, The Soul Monger will certainly please hard science fiction fans for its conceptual work but is also an entertaining and accessible epic for newcomers to the genre too..

About the author

Writer on the autism spectrum, Star Wars nerd, and chihuahua mother with a background in theatre and classical music. I write handwavium (Plot over reality), thought-provoking science/speculative fiction about ordinary people in extraordinary situations, usually in other time periods or galaxies (sometimes both). Amazon bestselling author in Time Travel romances and Metaphysical and Visionary fiction.
When my brain is not off on a quest of imaginings somewhere out in the galaxy with my trusty chihuahua sidekick Oggie, I can be found with sand between my toes, collecting teapots and obsessing over all things Star Wars.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2023This is a well written story of people who’ve been taken from earth off to another galaxy. The story has characters that you get involved with and a bit of a plot twist. This is the first book I’ve read by the author and I’m looking forward to the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2023Interesting but too incomplete. Series are usually incomplete or left with a cliffhanger but need to be more than just a set up for the next book, things needs to resolve and move forward
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018This is the third book I have read by this author and I'm hooked! I loved getting to know Alice in her 'Alice' duology, and I have enjoyed joining Laurel for the start of her exciting adventures in The Soul Monger - book 1. Can't wait for the next book. Scotney maintains her beautiful style of writing and is dynamic in her storytelling, keeping things a little unpredictable and ensuring the readers' curiosity. A great book - I really recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2021Full of nuance, this story takes time to develop. As it is crafted with deliberate pacing some readers will be put off at lack of action, while others, myself included, will savor the writers art and skill in world-building.
Worth reading for the patient.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2020oh my goodness but i seriously could not put this book down, except in the middle a bit where it lagged, but overall, what a fantastic read! Love how long it is, how broad in scope, and the story line intrigues endlessly. Wonderful characters. I love how the story just keeps unfolding & am heading into the 2nd book now.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2019Good Sci-fi book.
I liked this book for several reasons.
The beginning with the mystique around the main characters abduction.
The balanced use of science terminology and character development. Sci-fi by default uses a lot of quasi-science and this book had a balance between science terms and plot which I enjoyed. It flowed well without being too technical.
The plot twists: The book's plot twisted several times in slightly directions, which kept it refreshing and interesting to read.
What I didn't like:
The pace was a bit too slow for me. I am impatient and long descriptions of bathroom facilities and similar which I didn't even understand doesn't really add to the plot. If we assume that there are still humans in a parallel universe, we can assume that they visit normal toilets.
That everyone just seems to willingly join the league in their fight against the invaders.
Kidnap six random people and ask them to volunteer in a war they have no stake in, and I am sure some of them will be less than enthusiastic about it.
Mostly good:
The book left me with many unanswered questions. This is mostly good because a book that makes me think has appealed to me. I hope that my questions will be answered in the second book.
To sum things up: I'd recommend this book to people who like slow-paced sci-fi stories which focus on character development and plot twists.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2020I didn’t expect much but I was pleasantly surprised. A very enjoyable read. I recomend it to everyone. Be sure to read to the very end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good world building, huge weaknesses!
The writing is fluid and engaging in the main but the weak points made it impossible for me to finish.
It's not believable that abducted humans would adapt so easily and happily to being used as weapons in a conflict that is at best ill explained. They put up very little resistence and are soon convinced their fate is the best thign ever. YUCK!
What made me want to throw the book into a corner is that one of the abductees is a small girl. First, a probe is inserted into her brain to make her 'feel less sad', then, she's declared an adult because th abductors say so and the other victims go along, even declare themselves okay with one of the abdoctors possibly engaging in sexual relations with her. WTF?! How uber creepy is that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Alien abduction ..... or is it just an opportunity to do something great
Another fabulous book by Matilda Scotney. She has a way of bringing her characters to life and making them so likeable. They are like friends you have known for ages. This story is very exciting about where abducted humans go and why. Her imagination is astounding and it is all very believable. I loved this book and can't wait for the next instalment. Thank you Matilda for another great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Convincing! READ THIS
A very well crafted sci fi story. The characters are likeable and their situation relatable. I literally read this in ond day, as it is a compelling tale. The writer has strong imaginative skills. Dont miss this.
The central character is a very rounded and believable construct. The author is great at creating believable dialogue, which is revealing as well as moving the plot on.
Excellent stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
This is a book that can easily be reality in the future. Read with an open mind and a slight knowledge of what technology is capable of at the present time and you will be transported out of this world for a gripping adventure. The author's capability to bring you in to the characters and bring everything to life is a testimony to her writing skills. I cannot wait to read the next book

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Although I felt the concept of empathy was taken a little too far into “magic”, the world building and characters were engaging.
