Take Them by Storm (Angel Island Book 3) Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

*This book is a standalone companion novel to Waiting for the Storm and After the Storm.

Sadie Fitzgerald has always been different, and not just because she makes her own clothes and would rather stay home watching Doctor Who than party with kids her age. When it’s time to leave Angel Island for college, Sadie is eager to put her old life behind her. Small-minded people and rumors have plagued her for years, but with the love of her adoptive family, the O’Dells, Sadie has learned to embrace who she is. Now she’s not afraid to admit the rumors about her are true: she’s gay.

For the first time in her life, Sadie feels free to be herself. She dives into college life and begins volunteering at the local LGBT center, where she discovers her small-town upbringing left holes in her education about life outside Angel Island.

The world is a bigger and more accepting place than Sadie ever imagined. She’s finally found where she belongs, but with the reappearance of someone from her past, an unexpected new friendship, and a chance at love, Sadie soon realizes she still has a lot to learn about life, friendship, and love.

Marie Landry lives and writes in a cozy apartment in Ontario, Canada, surrounded by books and Funko Pops. An avid reader from a young age, she loves getting lost in characters’ worlds, whether they’re of her own making or someone else’s. She particularly loves stories with as much of an emphasis on self-discovery and friendship as on romance...but don’t leave out the romance!

When not doing bookish things, you can often find her taking pictures, cooking, scrolling Instagram (find her at @marielandry.author), daydreaming about frolicking through the Scottish Highlands, or listening to the same music she's loved since the '90s. She's an unapologetic nerd and fangirl, and that, along with her mental health advocacy, is often woven into her books.

TAKE THEM BY STORM is a powerful New Adult contemporary. If pressed, I would describe it as a romance, although there is so much more than that within these pages. Sadie Fitzgerald is our main character, and her vibrant voice guides us through her journey of self-discovery and self-love.

I loved seeing Sadie really come into her own. I told Marie early on that several chapters made me cry. Sadie hasn't had an easy life, but she really rises above all of that to make her own place in the world, and I wanted to either hug her or applaud her at so many points. Seeing her stand up for who she is and what she believes in was SO important and so powerful.

There is romance in TAKE THEM BY STORM but as I mentioned, that's not all there is. There's a huge importance on friendship and family. Plus, Sadie wants to help the LGBTQ community so that no one has to have her experience, so we get to see her working a a community center. We also see her pursuing her education, making friends, making some big mistakes, and even though she stumbles a lot along the way, we see her getting stronger with every mishap.

Marie found a great way of balancing the old relationships and friendships with the new, plus there are some SWOONY moments. It all combines to make TAKE THEM BY STORM one of my favorite books of hers.

Sadie is quirky and vibrant. She is a real person with a relatable troubled past. Everybody in the book is developed and unique. I wanted to hate Carmen, I really did, but I couldn't. I even felt for the smaller side characters, like the elderly lesbian couple struggling to get their kids to understand (and I would buy a book about them in a heartbeat, FYI).

River and Sadie's friendship is so touching and genuine. There's a scene where they lay in bed together looking at the glow-in-the-dark stars in Sadie's room, and I thought that was the most beautiful moment in the whole book. Real moments of platonic friendship between people of different genders without any unrequited romantic feelings is impossible to find, and I was so moved by this one little scene.

I think anyone with a bad past *needs* to read this. There's so much hope present in this book of overcoming mental and physical demons. Nobody's life is perfect, but Sadie shines and brings a message to everyone that things can change for the better. Some may take longer than others, but there is hope.

Sadie Fitzgerald (Lesbian, narrator), Ella & River (Ella B/F, Sadie BMF) all lived on Angel Island (Lake Ontario). They were known as the misfit trio. Charlotte is Ella’s sister. Ezra is her B/F.
The 2 girls Ella & Charlotte’s mother Sarah had died in a car accident a yr. ago.
Fast forward H.S. graduation is history.
Ella is going to St. Lawrence College (Kingston).
Sadie (SW) & River Maracle (addictions counseling) are going to Loyola (Bellevue). They are also roommates.
Charlotte is going to Queen’s University.
    Ezra has a new job.
Later Ella & Sadie go out to eat & Padma (f) is eyeballing Sadie.
Sadie is going to do an internship at Bellevue Rainbow Resource Centre (BRRC, LGBT?). Jo Edwards (supervisor, Josephine, Josie, JoJo) greets her. Kit is a BRRC counselor).
Sadie helps with groups, fund raisers & lots of other things.
Carmen (C, Hannah Moon roommate, bisexual) seem to becoming quite intimate.
Sadie had been hurt a lot in life will she finally find a lasting lesbian relationship?

This book brought back a lot of fond memories. What my former clients have to endure. Men are gay & woman are lesbians. Then BT. ? is a newer term, the person does not know what his/her sexual preference is, or even gender like Morphidite. I got to meet & talk to Matthew Shepard’s mom. She came to my undergraduate campus. Guess who was across the street protesting yep the Fred Phelps bunch – him of course, he never participates.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written YA LGBT? book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great YA LGBT? movie, PP presentation or mini TV series (A & E, History channel). There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

I can't say I didn't enjoy it, I can say I lost sight for a bit and had a hard time concentrating, I felt like a lot was really thrown at me at random times and I wish it focused on more of Sadie's friendships and etc. Especially working on herself, but I did enjoy it. Maybe a little more romance, but no complaints.
