ONE PENNY A STORY, I called across the playground.

Entirely unusual, given how shy I was (and still am), for me to be shouting anything across a playground.

But there I was, a double-sided sheet of narrow ruled paper (I've always been kind of particular about the paper I like. Back then, narrow ruled. Now, grid.) in my hand, selling stories I hadn't yet wrote.

Every line featured a different title. I'd lay on my bed the night before thinking of them all, probably singing along to Boyzone songs as I did [hey, don't judge... I see you over there like you never thought you were destined to marry a boy band singer...].

My school friends could buy a Mona original for one penny. One penny!

They'd pick the title they liked, hand over their sweaty penny, and I'd write the story for them.

And I've never grown out of writing stories.

Now, I write cozy mystery stories from my den in the Peak District, and when I'm not writing them, I'm reading them.

Violet getting a letter floating thru the window from her Alta Mater was never a good sign.
Ellie looking around the coffee shop wanted to use her magic want to clean it, but knew that wouldn’t go over in the town. More thoughts should of gone into this venture, how dirty people were, and then to touch and clean.
Getting an envelope with the school crest, as she open the door.
A storm, a murder, this was a reunion to die for. The humor and adventure as they try to investigate, I liked the two narration of Violet and Ellie, will it be by using magic to figure out. Delightful cozy mystery

Can there be anything more fear inducing than a school reunion? Make that a reunion at a magic school and the fear is multiplied 100times over. Ellie, Violet and Crystal- a trio of friends and witches- receive invitations to a gala at their old school. The primary reason for the gala is the announcement of the schools changing its status and becoming an academy. The three witches are enjoying themselves when Ellie has a premonition of black vultures a sure sign of an upcoming death but whose? With her characteristic humor, Mona has once again crafted an extremely readable and enjoyable tale. The list of suspects includes everyone under the sun not happy with the schools change - the possibilities are endless. This is a quick, enjoyable read. Well done Mona!

I love the characters, but one of them is my secret favorite. I love all of Mona Marple's series, and in all of them it is because of my secret favorites. This mystery had everything... Infidelity, magic, mystery, and fun! Even though this is the fifth book in the series, it also works as a standalone. Highly recommended!!

I enjoyed the book but every time I read the words "eye roll" it pulled me out of the story. Using this once in a book is enough. When I think of someone doing this I picture a full smacking teenager, but adults. I enjoyed the plot and characters so I will continue to read future books.

Good book. Enjoyed the characters and the build up in the story. Interesting developments to solve a murder and remember detectives are everywhere, even when they don't know it.

I actually liked this one better than the original Mystic Springs books. I especially liked Ellie and enjoyed seeing another side to Violet that you didn't get to see in the "ghost" books. It will be fun to see where the author goes next and with which character.

A fun paranormal cozy mystery. Violet and Ellie are at their school reunion when a storm traps them on the island, and then there is a murder. A well written, fun mystery with great characters. This series has been excellent so far and this standalone has kept up the high standard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light, almost frivolous but a good read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 29, 2019
Okay it's not a serious read but if you want pure entertainment with quirky characters then this is for you. The plot revolves around a school reunion but this might be the last one ever as the head has agreed to change the school into an Academy. That is until he meets an early demise. Stabbed in the back. Three unlikely heroines take up the challenge to find out who killed him. An artist (more or less a recluse), a coffee shop owner ( one has always been made to feel that her magic was inferior by the school) and independently wealthy socialite. Can they work through the clues, the affairs, the egos and the desperate need for money to find out the culprit? What will each of the three find out about themselves in the process?
