S.R. Hatton’s life has been shaped by service, resilience, and a deep commitment to understanding dementia. A U.S. Air Force veteran, she served as a paralegal in the JAG Corps before continuing her career as a legal assistant and 911 operator—professions that demanded quick thinking, compassion, and a steady resolve. In May 2020, she began experiencing cognitive symptoms that raised difficult questions. Having witnessed her grandmother’s slow decline from dementia for more than a decade, she recognized similar patterns emerging in her own family—and even in herself. Determined to learn everything she could, she immersed herself in dementia research, seeking answers not just for her own peace of mind, but for the countless others facing the same concerns.

Now semi-retired, Ms. Hatton lives with her husband, Jeff, a retired U.S. Navy Chief, in the peaceful Virginia countryside near the Chesapeake Bay. Their four daughters are spread across the country, but family remains their priority, and they travel to visit whenever health permits. Their home is also shared with Willow, their beloved Morkie, whom they affectionately call their “fifth daughter.”

Much of Ms. Hatton’s time is spent furthering her research on dementia and exploring new and innovative ways to support caregivers. Through her books, she combines personal experience with practical, well-researched guidance, offering real-world strategies that make the caregiving journey more manageable. Her writing is grounded in empathy, honesty, and a desire to ease the burdens of those caring for loved ones with dementia. In addition to her work on dementia care, she is currently writing another book to share with readers, continuing her mission to inform, encourage, and support those who need it most.

In a world where caregivers of loved ones with dementia are always searching for ways they can connect, share laughter and spend more meaningful time than simply watching the boob tube, Tales from Memory Lane stands out as a remarkable resource.
It's a thoughtfully curated collection of stories about the lives of famous figures — movie stars, sports legends, inventors, scientists and heroes like Babe Ruth, Albert Einstein, John Kennedy, Amelia Earhart, Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash. It turns out that by talking about our all-time favorite folks, we are actually using something called "reminiscence therapy" that stimulates the brain by touching on memories from long ago, the ones that dementia patients can most easily access.
The ease of use is another standout feature. The engaging tales provide ample opportunity for conversation, turning reading time into a delightful and interactive experience. The celebrity guessing game is hilarious and will provide you and your loved one with many heartwarming memories.

I didn't expect narratives on dementia up front of the stories, so that was a nice benefit. The stories themselves were biographical sketches. They were more detailed and advanced than expected. My mother in law has dementia and I just can't see her getting into Einstein's theories of relativity, but okay! It is a handy resource if you don't have one like this.

Tales from Memory Lane S E Hutton is a book of possibilities. Dementia is a cruel diagnosis and disease to our senior population. But this book focuses on reminisce therapy, which is a tool of using historical or personal stories to remind seniors and spark a memory. Caregivers using this therapy can see their loved ones remember and reminisce about the past. With stories crafted from personal history or some of the ideas in the book of famous people and events, this book explains , guides and encourages the reader. Outstanding book!
