Editorial Reviews

Review

"Eloquent, sinister and haunting. One of the smartest, most unique, and dark queer urban fantasy reads I have read." - J. P. JACKSON, author of Summoned and Magic or Die
"Baines' brave new underworld is well devised, multi-layered, and dense with political and personal agendas-and it's frightening: so much so that I found myself looking over my shoulder more than once at night." FELICE PICANO, author of
Like People in History"Baines has a gift for twisted psyches, playing the supernatural to expose the human evils at play, and a talent for turns of phrases that leave you shuddering even as you turn the page." 'NATHAN BURGOINE, author of Light"I love the world created here. It has the same feel as Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Series, with a little more grit, and of course, the added m/m element. There is plenty of paranormal elements involved, some more gruesome than others, but it is a very colorful and interesting story." JUSTJEN, The Blogger Girls"Just fantastic! I'm just amazed by the imagination the author put into this, from the culprit to the resolution I just couldn't put it down." SARINA, Love Bytes Reviews"A wickedly subversive wit." JEFFERY ROUND, author of The Dan Sharp Mysteries"I really enjoyed this book and have great admiration for Baines' literary skill. My reaction to The Orchard of Flesh is that it's something of a mashup of Clive Barker and Noel Coward." ULYSSES, Prism Book Alliance

"Christian Baines is a writer with a bold, original vision, a vision not beholden to the limits of conventional genre tropes. This is a writer who knows his own voice, and a writer to watch." MICHAEL ROWE, author of Enter, Night

This is the fourth book in the series and the only one I have read. I know I have missed a lot which at first left me lost but I decided to concentrate on this book and read the descriptions and reviews of the other books, so I had an idea of what went on previously. I have concentrated on Reylan, Jorgas, Brett and Iain.

Reylan returned with Jorgas from the Wound a hell dimension. When Reylan visited the Arcadia Trust, he found it empty and in chaos and found his mannequin Brett starved and in horrendous condition. Reylan believed he was only gone twenty minutes which turned out to be five months. He left Iain dead and without his help he and Jorgas would never have been free.

It didn’t take Reylan long before he realized that Brett was not himself, but it was Iain who had occupied Brett’s body. Iain’s body was still in the Wound, and he is using Brett’s body. Iain explained that Brett after five months had gone insane and if Iain left his body, he would become a crazed monster.

Trying to find his friends Reylan visits Isobel’s house to find her gone and a horror show. The house is now occupied by evil, he hid behind a sarcophagus and witnessed Deborah and another performing a human sacrifice which was quite gory. After the sacrifice Reylan found a way to get out alive.

Things got very bad: a visit to the Arcadia Trust again he found Patricia and her trusted aide Kelvin, only Kelvin is now visible. Kelvin is a cloak walker always invisible, so he was just another victim of whatever possesses the Arcadia Trust building, and the only hope is to find and destroy the evil.

It was hard to know who to trust and when he trusted Deborah promising to give him answers it turned out no to well. Adrian Tseng a shaper has wanted revenge against Reylan for killing his lover after Jorgas in his wolf form left him for dead. Tseng orders a trial to determine if Jorgas should be eliminated and if he can be trusted among people. Reylan gets no answers, only more trouble.

So, despite not reading the first three books I found myself invested in this book. There are surprises, secrets, betrayal and violence but it held my interest from the beginning to the end. I definitely missed out on a lot and can’t recommend highly enough to begin with the first book in the series.

The characters, plot and world building are good, multi-layered and just plain amazing. This was another amazing tale in this series.

If Sins of the Son was a journey down the rabbit hole, Tears in Time is a trip through the looking glass. On acid. And it’s mind-blowingly awesome. Someone is manipulating reality and bending time, and for Reylan, that means he keeps getting his heart, not to mention his body, beaten to a pulp. Time truly is of the essence for him, but knowing who to turn to isn’t easy when those he used to count on have disappeared (been killed?), and he can’t trust what he sees with his own eyes. The only thing he can count on is that Jorgas has returned. Until, of course, he hasn’t.

Iain Grieg may be the only man Reylan can trust. And yet he proves himself untrustworthy again and again. But if Iain truly is so deceitful, then why does he keep saving Reylan’s life? Iain is helpful while also blithely double-crossing Reylan at nearly every turn, making him one of the best morally gray characters I’ve loved in a long time. While also making me want to curse the very ground he walks on. He does nothing unless it suits him and his end goals, and yet Iain keeps Reylan moving forward so he can unravel the unholy tangle that is the world in its current form. Iain contains multitudes, really. What a delectable conundrum he is.

The momentum of this installment of the Arcadia Trust series is breakneck. Fortunately for readers, only in the figurative sense. For some of its characters, not so much. The introduction of the indigenous Australian mythology was an incredible asset when everything else in this particular version of the world was already upside down and backwards anyway. What’s one more chaos agent to deal with, after all, when someone is already trying to destroy you?

And that ending? Well . . . it’s delicious, and I want more.

*I received an ecopy of this book from the author. This has not influenced my review.*

This was a good book, but a hard one to review because it was full of interdimensional / other realm / mental supernatural stuff, as well as sorta-twists and plans and machinations of different characters. Which are things I can’t talk about without spoilers. What I can say is, I had a bit of trouble fully grasping all the supernatural/magical stuff, but I still enjoyed it and was invested in the characters.

And ultimately these books are about the characters. Especially Reylan, who started the series seeming somewhat cold, but who has shown himself to have a surprisingly soft and forgiving heart. He just wants to save every wayward, confused, struggling person he finds. Numerous characters have grown on me though, and I like them too. Others have kind of done the opposite, they’ve done things that have made me not trust them, and yet I still care about them or want to know more.

I don’t know how to categorize or describe the relationships at this point, but their complexity is something I’ve always loved about the series. There is romance and genuine feelings, and usually some sex (though I can’t remember if there was any in this book specifically), but it’s complicated.

Of course there were also vampires, werewolves, witches, and more (though they aren’t called that).

Overall, this was a great continuation of the series with an interesting story full of twists and magic, and I want to know what’s going to happen next!

This is another amazing tale in this series. I love the rich tapestry created in this series, it just keeps pulling me in and I am glad to let it. Highly entertaining, it definitely screws with my head sometimes but I just can't leave it alone. I am so excited to see what is coming next from this incredible author.

Yet again Christian has given us an incredible literary work in the Arcadia series which I found like all his other books enticing, riveting, engrossing, captivating, and eager for more.

TEARS IN TIME, was I think the most amazing sequel and loved it immensely, and HIGHLY recommend this to one and all who enjoy this type of book.
