A Heart to Protect (Silver Springs Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

There’s no guarantee she’ll survive the arduous journey West, but she’ll do everything in her power to make it there.

Jane O’Malley leaves Independence, Missouri, after her fiancé breaks off their engagement, the day of their wedding. With her heart broken and the sudden death of her mother, she and her father say goodbye to heartbreak in hopes of starting over in a land flowing with milk and honey, no matter how dangerous the journey.

Enoch Harden leaves his family in New York, dreams shattered and disowned by those who should’ve loved him the most. He blames God for his failures and sets out to prove he can succeed without the Lord and his family. With the help of three friends, he purchases enough cattle to start over in the West. He vows to get there, no matter what challenges face him.

When he meets Jane O’Malley, sparks fly between them. They fight their feels for one another as well as the hidden and not so hidden dangers along the way. In order to survive the elements and their innermost fears, they must rely on each other or risk everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Joi Copeland invites you to journey with Enoch and Jane and the rest of the wagon train as they embark on the adventure of discovering the meaning of true love.

This is a great tale of the love and hardship that traveled with them on their wagon train trip to Oregon. Jane is dumped by her intended just hours before the alter and her ma had recently passed away. Her pa decides he and his daughter are on their way west wagon train. Four devoted young men, friends, a doctor, a blacksmith, a want to be rancher and one more are also going west, maybe not all the way to Oregon, but that was to be seen. They were all devoted Christians but one. They had all sorts of trials as they proceed west. You will enjoy learning all about their journey as you read their story.

This was a wonderful adventure on the Oregon Trail that one can get emersed in. This is not the first book by Joi Copeland that I have read, but I felt that this one had a depth that the other stories written by her didn't quite achieve. While it does lean heavily on Biblical teachings, I think that believers and non-believers can enjoy this tale of love, friendship, and self-discovery. The Christian message comes through in the story without it feeling preachy and the characters are relatable.

Jane and her father, Sean, set out on the trail for a new start after the death of Sean's wife. Both have their reasons for undergoing the journey, though perhaps their reasons are not the only thing compelling them to take this journey as their presence is important to the journey of other characters that undertake the trip west with them.

I appreciated actually seeing Enoch's struggles with traumas of his past and the complexity of finding his salvation. Having seen his father present God in a negative way, Enoch has trouble reconciling God with love and forgiveness despite the examples set by his friends Doc Bennett, Dawson and Zachariah. The struggles he faces aren't just the physical ones presented by the trail but his inner ones as he finds his Faith with the help of those around them.

Though a secondary character, Doctor Bennett Martin is my favorite character in this book. Though he has a strong faith that defines his character, we still see him struggle as he uses his skills to keep those in his wagon train healthy as well as be a good friend to the three men he set out on this journey with. Doc, Enoch, Dawson and Zachariah have a strong friendship that comes through as "chosen family".

The flaws and strengths of the characters help to endear the readers to them. You can't help but become invested in their well being as you read about the obstacles that face them on their journey.

This was a very nice book to read. It was written by Joi Copeland and was a very enjoyable book to read. A young woman is jilted, on the day of her wedding. He married her best friend. Next day the young woman and her father leave on the Oregon trail and their adventure starts then. This was a very enjoyable book to read and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I have to admit that I was not drawn into this book at first but after putting it down, the second part had me hooked! It is definitely more than just a story as it teaches essential lessons about doctrines of God and how he leads us in life. This has all the elements of a good Oregon Trail/Wild West book. It is fun how she uses dialogue that expresses their native tongue so you can hear the characters.

I didn’t expect such a deep story! Jane and Enoch had many hurdles to overcome during their time on the trail. Many bumps in the road. But with faith in God and resting in His guidance, their little group made it to their new home.

Loved how the gospel was such an integral part of this book 💖🙏🏼
