That First Year Kindle Edition
Elyse Laramie created a happy, loving home for herself and her three children, who now, as adults, are successful and living independent lives away from home. Her marriage to her high school sweetheart, Tim, had grown into something that neither of them wanted it to be, but it wasn’t something that either of them wanted to end. Elyse had always secretly hoped the future would bring about a change that would rekindle that spark between them and renew what had become a platonic relationship.
Her oldest daughter, Claire, is married with two young children of her own. She is building her career in the same field as her father. Kade, the middle child, is a paramedic, living with his girlfriend of two years. Kelsey, the youngest, is getting ready to graduate from college.
Then…a terrible accident changes everything.
In the aftermath, life goes on and brings new roles, new or renewed romantic relationships, and new challenges to each member of the family.
Grief experts advise someone coping with the recent loss of their loved one to make no major life decisions or changes during That First Year. For the Laramie family, life had other plans. This is each of their stories during That First Year.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2023I truly enjoyed this story by Margaret Kay. It was very well written. The character development was outstanding. This was just a very marvelous story; one that you will really enjoy reading. I highly recommend reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2023Sometimes it is difficult to start a new book with new characters. It took a few chapters to really get involved but when I did, it was difficult to put down. I loved reading and learning about Elyse and her family after they lost their husband and father, Tim. All of those “firsts” that take place after someone passes away. I thought Claire’s storyline was going to be very predictable although I was secretly hoping it wouldn’t be. Sure enough, there was a definite plot twist! Overall, it was a great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2023This is a very good book well written by Ms Kay. Her characters come alive and you just don't want to put the book down it is all about family and their interactions. Loved it
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025I've tried to continue reading this book but it is very amateurish.., drags on and on.. nothing to really hold my interest. Sorry I spent money for it.. I'm deleting it and moving on to another book... sorry
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2023Margaret Kay is one of my two favorite authors and her Shepherd Security series is amazing. This book is very different from Shepherd Security, and is every bit as good. I enjoy reading about people in their 40s and older who are facing real life situations. That First Year is a great book and I highly recommend adding it to your must read list!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2024This book is about a family's journey the first year after the father's death. As a widow, it touched me in many ways. I wish I had a family like this to have learned on. I dreamt of brothers to lean on, of children to have celebrated with, of family to have cried with.
This book speaks on many levels. I wish I found a man like Jake. This left me hoping. Expect to be touched on many levels.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023This is the lamest book I have read in a LONG time. Several errors are in the book and it’s simplistic writing was very amateurish! Not worth getting. I could write a better book and I’m not even close to being a writer.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2023This was an OK book with an OK story but I just couldn't get past the horrible editing. Commas in weird places where they didn't belong was the most egregious. Multiple times of using one character's name when another character was meant. Made me not want to finish the 690 page book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story of love
I call this story of love because it is not a love story of an individual but the story of love and acceptance in a family.
It is not the type of book I normally read as I enjoy more murder mystery type books. In spite of that I was draw by the story right to the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Neverending
This could have been written in about half the amount of words. Paragraph upon paragraph written that didn't make or break the actual story. Just too much useless conversation, description, made it long and boring to me. I've never skimmed through a book as much as this one. The characters were well developed, but the actual theme got lost along the way.
