That One Heartbreak: A Small Town Single Mom Romance (The Heartbreak Brothers Next Generation Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 930 ratings

She used to be his best friend’s wife. But now she’s the one woman he can’t resist…

Single mom Kate Connelly is doing her best to hold it all together after losing her firefighter husband two years ago. With a teenage son who loves to push boundaries, a middle child who’s a pyromaniac in the making, and a curious daughter who never stops asking questions, Kate barely has time to breathe—let alone think about romance.

But when her late husband’s best friend, Marley Hartson, shows up with his steady presence and protective instincts, Kate can’t ignore the flutter in her chest.

Marley made a promise to his best friend that he’d always look after his family. What he didn’t expect was to fall for the one woman he’s forbidden to love.

As their attraction deepens and the summer sizzles, Kate and Marley must decide: Will they honor the past, or risk it all for a chance at a new future?

Because some promises are meant to be broken…

Carrie Elks writes contemporary romance with a sizzling edge. Her first book, Fix You, has been translated into eight languages and made a surprise appearance on Big Brother in Brazil. Luckily for her, it wasn’t voted out. Carrie lives with her husband, two lovely children and a larger-than-life black pug called Plato. When she isn’t writing or reading, she can be found baking, drinking an occasional (!) glass of wine, or chatting on social media.

I'm a sucker for small town romances with single parents. Kate Connelly is raising her three children after the death of her husband Paul. While he didn't pass in the heat of a fire, being around his co-workers is difficult. Every time they offer any help, she refuses. Marley Hartson isn't one to give up easily. Kate feels this great need to be self-sufficient. Kate gradually begins to accept help from Marley. It's hard to keep his at arm's length when his help comes at just the right time. Even her children love being around Marley. The attraction between them is evident, but Kate is scared. Marley is patient and helpful, compassionate and kind. He gives her the space and time to come to the same conclusion he has, that she's strong on her own but together they can be stronger. This story is about loss and grief, two topics that are difficult to comprehend and overcome. The author does a great job of addressing these topics as well as navigating love after loss. While this book is the third in a series, it can be read as a standalone.

I adored this book. It was so heartfelt with a heavy dose of romance and spice.

Marley Hartson is a construction worker and volunteer firefighter—but his passion is firefighting. His best friend, Paul, at the fire house passed away suddenly 2 years ago, and since then, Marley made it his mission to look after Paul’s widow Kate and her kids. The problem is, Kate wants nothing to do with Marley.

Kate was so heartbroken by the passing of her husband that she pushed Marley and anyone at the fire house away. She lived her day to day in a type of solitude, never really living and just getting through the day. She knows Marley is always hovering nearby, his nightly jog by their house each to ensure everything looks ok, offering his help when he can, even though she never accepts.

It’s not until Kate’s oldest gets himself into a bit of trouble that Kate and Marley begin to connect. Finally she accepts his help and learning how wonderful it feels to let someone into their little world. It’s not long after that Kate and Marley begin to acknowledge an attraction to each other, but neither know how to handle it. It’s innocent, it’s sweet, it’s pure, and when they finally give in to their desires, it’s total fire!

I loved the pacing of this story and how they handled the forming of their relationship. Kate and Marley were always putting her kids first, as well as their own individual devotion to Paul’s memory. Their giddiness for each other was so consuming—like teenagers sneaking around after discovering their first love. Its was absolutely adorable. Kate and Marley’s story is filled with family, romance, and so much love. This is my favorite book of this series, and devoured it in 1 day!

Marley and Kate make a cute couple. Marley was sweet and wanted to keep his promise to Paul, even if it hurt him. The kids loved Marley and Marley loved them. Marley was Kate’s second chance.

Reading the Kate and Marley’s story is a bit of both. Heartbreaking because of how much guilt and sadness both characters have carried. Love because it is the ultimate cure from a heartbreak. ❤️

This story is about Marley Hartson, twin brother of Pres (you can read his story in ‘That one touch’). I was really looking forward to this story and I enjoyed it, it was a good story, emotional, but also funny at times and there were some steamy scenes too. .

Kate Connelly is a new character in this series. She’s 35 years old, widow and mother of three children. James, who’s 15 years old (he was her husband’s first child, she adopted him when she married his father). Ethan is 8 years old and Addy is 6 years old. Two years ago Kate’s husband died unexpectedly, it was difficult for them all. So for the last two years, Kate was on her own for everything. Although people around her offered her help, Kate wanted to do everything herself. She wanted to prove to everyone (and herself) that she was strong enough to do it all on her own.

Marley has a construction company together with his brother Pres. But in his spare time he’s also a firefighter. Two years ago he had to watch when as his boss (and best friend) Paul died before his eyes. Marley felt a lot of guilt and he then made the promise to take care of Paul’s family. But that’s hard when Kate doesn’t want any help. But now, due to certain circumstances, Kate and her children need Marley’s help. By spending more time together, Marley and Kate grow closer. But they have to be careful. There are Kate’s children and living in a small town where people see everything and love to gossip means they have to be extra careful if they want to spend time together (especially if you want to keep it a secret). Things are going very well between them but when an accident involving one of Kate’s children triggers their feelings of guilt. It takes forgiveness and some heart-to-heart conversations to let go of the past and allow love to begin.

Just like ‘The Heartbreak brothers’ series, I also enjoy the next generation series. The stories are a mix of small town, sweet, fun but they also include some steamy sex scenes. This story is also told from both POV’s.
Just like the other men in this series, Marley is protective, a hard worker and he loves his family very much. It’s wonderful to see how he also finds love. Marley has always had a bit of a crush on Kate, but she was the wife of his best friend Paul. But now that she’s a widow he struggles with his feelings. A big part of him wants to claim Kate and her children, but another part feels guilty about it. But the chemistry between them is too big to ignore, especially now that Kate is ready to let another man into her heart and life. I really loved the bond and interaction between Marley and Kate’s children. He was great with them all. He was a good friend to James, who was at a time in his life where he needed a friend a friend to talk to and get advice from more than a father figure. Ethan and Addy were younger and were looking for someone they could feel safe with, to play with, to be a father to them.

It was great to see Press and his wife Cassie, his younger brother Hendrix and Marley’s parents again. The brothers are still wild, even though they are older now. It was lovely to see how they all showed their love in different ways.

Shana, Kate’s best friend was great too. She supported Kate in various ways, from drinking wine together to looking after Kate’s children. She was a loyal friend and she was always there when Kate needed here.

I was super happy with the epilogue. I really love them.

The guilt you feel when falling for your dead husbands best friend, or the guilt of falling for your best friends widow. It is never easy but true feelings come to light and they work through it.

Kate has worked hard to move on in her life the best she can after her fire fighter husband dies suddenly. It took her a longtime to prove to herself that she could handle life on her own with her kids and not be co-dependent on others. But everyone needs support.

Marley has tried his best to give the support but Kate is not very accepting while she works through all of the feelings. So he does his best to make sure everything is ok from afar. But an incident with Kates oldest son brings them together and that is Marley's way of starting to get her to accept the support.

They fight feelings and knock heads but finally find their way.

I have read several of Carrie's books, and the first two in this series. So far, out of all I have read, I found this one is my absolute favourite. Such a wonderful, emotional story, and the characterisation is stunning. I cannot wait for book four, but meanwhile I'm going to read the ones on my TBR pile. Highly recommend this.

Don’t start reading this if you have plans.
I read this book in a day.
Loved the characters and the storyline.
Could almost picture the characters and loved the realness of being a busy mum with three children while trying to figure things out.
The Happy Ever After was the cherry on top of the cake.
    Brilliant!!!

A beautiful well written story. The pages came to life and I read it in one sitting. I loved the references to characters from previous books. However it reads well as a standalone. Can't wait for the next one.
