The Year of Yes and No: A dual-timeline novel (The Duality Novels Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 58 ratings

The Year of Yes and No
A picture paints a thousand words, but sometimes you just need one.

1802 Colchester Hall, Northumberland. Harriet has been invisible all her life, a dutiful daughter, a dutiful wife and, with her husband's recent passing, a dutiful widow.
When she inherits her husband's fortune, she discovers a freedom she has only dreamt of. Now wealthy, Harriet can say yes whenever she chooses – but only if she remains unmarried.
Battling her ingrained sense of duty and her conniving mother-in-law, Harriet must fight for her new-found independence. But every day, her feelings for long-time confidante Alexander grow, leaving her with an agonising choice – freedom, or love.

Which will she say ‘yes’ to?

2023 London. Gabriella Sullivan has a lot to juggle. Taking on more responsibility at a London art gallery pays the bills, but being her family's default administrator, cook and babysitter is what drains most of her energy.
When Gabriella stumbles upon Regency miniatures of Harriet Colchester, she's fascinated by the differences before and after Harriet’s marriage – one portrait deferential, the other devil-may-care.
Inspired to research Harriet's story, it doesn't hurt that the investigation includes Hugo, the chocolate-voiced owner of the miniatures.

Can Harriet's journey help Gabriella find her own voice, and say 'no' to her family's unreasonable demands?

Having wanted to be a journalist when she was a teenager, Sara actually ended up in PR. From there, it was a short skip to writing for pleasure, and from there to drafting her first book, a romance series where gardens feature in a BIG way. This allows her to indulge her passion for gardening, inherited from her grandmother.

Sara’s English Garden Romance series started as a trilogy and morphed into slightly more than a quartet. It has four novels, three novellas and a short story. The novels are The Garden Plot, Love in a Mist, The Glasshouse Effect and A Wilder Heart. All the novellas are available to subscribers from her website.

Her dual timeline novels, the Duality Series, are stand-alone books which features two stories, somehow connected. These are The Visitor, which won a Prestige Chill With A Book Award; The Fern Keepers, which also received a Premier Chill With A Book Award; and her latest book, The Year of Yes and No.

She’s currently working on a stand-alone contemporary story set in Corfu.

She loves hearing from readers who have thoughts about her books and characters - and even about gardening! - so please visit my website (good for news and freebies!)

I loved both heroines in this satisfying dual timeline blend of women’s fiction and romance.

In 1802, genteel Harriet unexpectedly finds herself widowed, wealthy, and independent. Regency women typically live under the legal and financial “protection” of their fathers, husbands, male relatives or trustees, and quiet, modest Harriet faces a fast learning curve as she fights to keep her inheritance and weighs her precious autonomy against a second chance at love and marriage with stalwart Alexander, her late husband’s best friend.

Modern-day Gabriella, assistant manager of an art gallery, faces more subtle challenges, but the demands of family are not easily negotiated. There’s a fine line between helping people you love and being taken for granted, and Gabriella is struggling to set boundaries—until she unwraps a pair of miniature portraits of Harriet and is inspired by the transformation in the young widow. Be More Harriet becomes Gabriella’s motto as she tackles her career, family, and fledgling romance with gorgeous Hugo, the portraits’ owner.

I was cheering for both women as they earned their own happy endings. And I really liked the colorful cast of friends, family, and secondariy characters that gave the story so much depth and richness.

I’ve enjoyed all Sara Sartagne’s Duality novels, but The Year of Yes and No is my favorite so far. I really hope she writes more in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Company

Thoroughly enjoyable read, smoothly written and well researched. The lead characters in each timeline, Harriet and Gabriella, were fabulous company, instantly relatable and expertly crafted by the author. The parallels between the timelines - different eras, different women, but similar challenges, were cleverly threaded through the story and the quick changes between the timelines kept me glued to the pages. This was the first Sara Sartagne book I’ve read and will definitely read others. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleverly Written

This cleverly written dual timeline novel introduces two strong but very relatable female protagonists. In the Regency timeline, recently widowed Harriet is surprised to discover that her late husband left her the entirety of his estate and wealth do to with exactly as she liked—a striking diversion from the norm, especially as Harriet is only twenty-four years of age. Immediately, Harriet’s nasty mother-in-law, Augusta, begins to make plans that will keep the family fortune—and Harriet herself—very securely under her own control. Harriet must fight hard to keep her independence in a world where a young woman with her own means is a threat to the status quo and a prey to fortune-hunters.
In the modern-day thread, Gabriella struggles to escape the burdensome dependency of her family. Her mother seems unable to make the simplest decision without Gabriella’s help, while her brother and his wife rely on her for childcare, last minute catering and DIY. But with a new role at an art gallery and a boss open to the idea of giving her more autonomy, Gabriella must fight for her independence is she is to step from her family’s shadow.
What I especially liked about this book was its clever symmetry. The two stories share a pleasing unity of time—both unfolding in a twelve-month period. The women’s struggles mirror each other as they battle their own insecurities, the interference of others and their growing feelings of attraction for men who are out of bounds. However, the two very different eras made a super differentiation between them. Harriet, a member of the ton in Regency London, is debarred by her mourning from the balls and salons, so hovers discreetly on the periphery of private soirees and takes drives in closed carriages. This world of elegance and exquisite manners, fine clothes and fixed customs is very well rendered. Gabriella lives in modern London, characterised by commerce and coffee shops, dirty streets and Deliveroo. The different standards, paces and landscapes make for a lovely balance.
Connecting the stories are two beautiful miniature likenesses of Harriet, taken either side of her widowhood. The subtle differences in Harriet’s expression and demeanour—the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of her new-found independence—really inspires Gabriella. And there is the suggestion that in some way Harriet is watching Gabriella’s own fight for freedom through those time portals.
The ending of both women’s stories is very satisfactory, with just the right degree of steam to satisfy readers who are more raunchy ‘Bridgerton’ than chaste ‘Austen’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable dual timeline read

It’s been a long wait but well worth it. I’ve loved all of Sara Sartagnes books and this one is no exception. I really enjoy dual time line reads, and here we have two strong female leads, both of whom are likeable and believable. There is Harriet, a young Regency widow, who has the constraints of the era when women are merely chattel and just expected to do their duty. She comes in to her own, when she realises that she doesn’t have to do what’s expected of her especially now she is very wealthy. The authors research is very well done, and gives the reader a real feel for the period.

In present day we have Gabriella, a woman who has always taken care of her family, since the death of her father, but is now beginning to feel the need to put herself first. Her family dont just rely on her but expect her to drop everything to sort out their lives for them.

This is such a good read, with a lovely connection between the two women, which isn’t always easy to do, without making one of the characters more interesting than the other. I liked that there is a love interest for both women, and although you know where the story will lead, neither woman is a pushover. A thoroughly enjoyable and relatable read, that kept my internet all the way through, and as always I can’t wait for whatever Sara is going to write next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, hugely enjoyable dual timeline with a sprinkling of romance

I’ve been waiting for Sara’s new book - and here it is! I love the dual timeline novels. Her historical characters are always well researched and put in context with enough background so you know Sara has really explored what life was like and key events. However, as she stresses, this is historical fiction, not fact so that gives her scope to ‘play’ with some events.

The two lead characters are female. They are united across the years by being put upon by family, family obligations and expectations.

As the story unfolded I really liked the way that the contemporary heroine, Gabriella, was inspired by her investigations into the life of the historical character, Harriet. The Yes and No of the title being about how one woman learns to say Yes more often to new experiences and the other No to expectations- I’ll leave you to find out which is which!

In her other duality novels Sara has woven connections between the two lead characters which have a slight hint of a way of communicating across the centuries. It’s here too and skilfully done.

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who likes strong female characters navigating their worlds with growing confidence. Another reviewer has mentioned Austen with a touch of the Bridgertons - I understand that, as Sara’s historical characters show modern sensibilities which make them more accessible. The romance is a slow burn but it does burn!
