The Backup Princess: A Sweet Royal Enemies to Lovers RomCom (Royally Kissed Book 1) Kindle Edition
Taking the bull by the horns is child's play compared to ruling Malveaux. Yet here I am, a Texas girl turned princess, swapping tacos for a tiara.
Then I meet Europe’s most eligible bachelor, the irritatingly handsome Prince Alexander, and accidentally deck him instead of curtsying.
Oops.
I’d feel bad if he wasn’t such a self-satisfied jerk.
Now, I'm racing against a royal clock, trying not to let down my newfound country or my own wild heart. Alexander? He's a walking contradiction, with a smirk that heats my blood and eyes that tell tales of a depth I didn't expect.
Decisions aren't exactly my rodeo, but this time, my choice could cost me my new crown—or lead to a love story that rewrites my happily ever after.
Will this Texas girl rise to the royal challenge, or is this one fairytale destined to end with the slipper never found?

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2024This was the first Kate O’Keeffe book I have read. I enjoyed it so much I immediately looked at other books she wrote and started reading. She has written many! I am currently reading my third book! She has quite a way with words. One reason I chose this book was because I adore reading about Fictional Royalty. If Royal, princess, or prince is in the title, I am sold!
As always the most important parts of the story for me are the characters. Because without them there would be no story. Most of these characters both Major and minor make amazing contributions to the storyline of the book.
Alex – Prince Alexander of Ledonia, Party Prince, Prince McHottie (Alex hates the second two because for a year he has not partied or gone on dates but no one sees him that way.)
Maddie – Back-up Princess Madeleine of Malveaux – Maddie was a princess her whole life without knowing. Then she gets dragged to a small country of Malveaux because there is word her Uncle Nicholas will abdicate his line for the throne. That makes her sole heir to her grandparents, the King and Queen of Malveaux. She has been referred to even by Alex of Ledonia as a Back-up Princess.
Less Major:
Grandmama – Maddie's grandmother and the Queen of Malveaux
Grandpapa – Maddie's grandfather and the King of Malveaux
Chloe – Maddie’s very best friend, her only friend from America
Sophia – Alex's older sister who wants to be Queen. She feels she would make an excellent ruler.
Amelia – Alex's younger sister and favorite plus his wingman.
Max – Alex’s younger brother who is off to school at Cambridge.
This story is a fantastic story about a shy introvert who is brought from America to her mother’s home of Malveaux. Her mother was a princess which makes her a princess. She has been brought there because her Uncle plans to abdicate his rights for the crown. Maddie’s, grandparents, the King and Queen, need to have an heir. If not, the King’s brother plans to abolish the monarchy altogether. On the night of the ball, before she went out, she took a scarper into a closet/cupboard. Entering on the other side was Prince Alexander of Ledonia who just wanted a break from women chasing him and people believing that he is there as the Party Prince. He was in the cupboard looking for a meditation app and talking to himself. When along comes Maddie’s fist hitting him right in his nose. After, the Ball, Alex’s father insists Alex stay and follow the princess around until the Ledonian Royal family was back for the games. During that time Alex and Maddie became close friends both starting to feel more for the other. At the Games in Malveaux, her Grandpapa even allowed young people into the wife carry race. Alex chose Maddie. By the time the Lunar Ball had rolled around, he brought Maddie up to his and his siblings special place on the roof. It is there he kissed her for the first time. The fireworks outside were nothing compared to what was going on in each of their heads and hearts as they made that first kiss .
From this point on, things get a bit crazy and I don’t want to ruin it for you but there is a super shake-up of the Royal Families. What happens when the dust settles?
I really enjoyed this book! I think I would like to see where the other members of the Ledonian Royal family are. A second book might do that or a Novella.
Kate O’Keeffe’s The Back-up Princess Royally Kissed is definitely worth a read. I read it twice I liked it so much.
OVERALL: 10/10 ++

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025This book was super sweet with the added humor that made it a fun and quick read. I loved Alex and Maddie together, especially their first meeting (the meet hate), that while hilarious, went so very wrong. And there were so many side characters that added to the humor and charm of this book (I'm looking at you Amelia and Chole). And while there were some cheesey parts, I still really enjoyed this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2024This was a sweet story with such fun Princess Diaries vibes! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Maddie, a young woman from Texas, is now next-in-line for the throne of Malveaux after her uncle decides to abdicate. She travels to Malveaux in Europe, and begins training as a princess. She has some silly and awkward moments in the process, one of the biggest is meeting Prince Alexander, and accidentally punching him in the nose.
Prince Alexander has a reputation as being a partying playboy. When he comes off as arrogant and rude, Maddie‘s not so sorry she punched him.
They both had less than flattering opinions about each other before they met. They soon realize they were judging the other one unfairly, and that there was a lot more depth, goodness, and integrity in the other person.
I adored their romance, and how they fell for each other. I loved how Maddie rose to the occasion and becomes an awesome princess. I loved her cute grandparents, and so many of the secondary characters. It was a fun and entertaining read!
This is first book in a new series, Royally Kissed. I’m looking forward to more royal romances and adventures.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024It was a predictable story no surprises or true connections. I felt the author took pieces from gossip girl and the princess diaries and mashed them together. As one of the other reviewers said it had a lot of potential but fell short. If you want an easy read where you can skip sections (for the constant repeats), then I suggest this book. I would of loved if it evolved more of the families and if Eric showed up to cause trouble.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2025This is the first book in an interconnected series. The characters overlap throughout the series. Best if read in order.
Her mom gave up everything for love and to live a normal life. She's known who she was but didn't expect it to affect her life. Then they showed up.
He's been portrayed as a player. Though not the oldest he's still the current heir, grudgingly. How do these two heirs to the throne of two countries go from bruises to kisses? Will they have to choose between love and duty?

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect
Everything you could hope for in a surprise-royal romcom. Interesting country traditions, awesome families, and red tape that needs cutting with ceremonial scissors to get to the happy ending.
Loveable main characters with a hilarious start, this is totally heart-warming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Royal romance, great read
My guilty pleasure is a Royal Romance, this was pretty cute. Maddie is an everyday girl living in Texas, her world changes the day she escorted back to Malveaux, her late mothers birth place. Her Grandparents happen to be the King and Queen and Maddie is next in line to the Throne if her Uncle abdicates.
Maddie is shocked, at the ball thrown to welcome her she meets her best friends crush, the party boy Prince Alexander. They both rub each other up the wrong way and Maddie may have punched him....enemies to lovers trope and Royal makes a winning match.
It was a sweet read, Maddie's journey learning about her future role, balancing family needs as well as what she wants for herself romantically. Alexander tries to shake off his playboy past and carve a new future out for himself.

2.0 out of 5 stars it’s a very cute story
It’s a very cute rom-com sweet story and they had good chemistry together which was lovely. Not sure why I wasn’t in love with it - maybe it moved too quickly for me or something - it sort of reminded me of a hallmark movie. But I know 95% of people enjoy that so I know I’m in the complete minority in that way. I love the whole idea of the story but it just didn’t grab me as much as I hoped it would.
