The Boyfriend Swap Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 245 ratings

If you love Christmas movies, as in you check the Hallmark Channel guide starting in July, then hang on to your stockings, because here comes the merriest of indulgences. It’s “The Proposal” meets “The Holiday” in print.

First meet Robyn Lane. She’s always dated struggling creative types, including her current squeeze (Perry, an actor). For this year’s Chrismukkah celebration, her parents would love her to bring someone stable, reliable, steadily employed. You know, with health insurance and a 401(k).

Now let’s meet Sidney Bellows. Her parents already plan her professional life (she’s an attorney at her father’s law firm). If she brings her current boyfriend (Will, an attorney) to the family Christmas extravaganza, her parents will have their wedding planned by New Year’s Eve.

Leave it to a mutual friend (and copious amounts of wine) to find a playful solution: Swap those boyfriends, fool the parents, and enjoy the holidays. It’s perfect! Robyn can show off a successful attorney boyfriend, and Sidney’s high-society family won’t ring those wedding bells when they meet a flaky actor beau.

The fun isn’t in the theory, it’s in the practice.

Will turns out to be the boy-next-door Robyn crushed on hard throughout her teenage years. Sidney’s family fawns all over Perry like he’s an Oscar-winner rather than a D-list wannabe.

Fool the parents? Enjoy the holidays? Swapping boyfriends never sounded so good or went so bad. Take time to read this one. It’s like Christmas in July.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Schorr (A State of Jane) mixes and matches couples with charming aplomb in this sweet-natured romcom. Controlling, occasionally selfish attorney Sidney Bellows and cute-as-a-button, innocent elementary school music teacher Robyn Lane are tired of being judged by their families for their choices in boyfriends. They make an ill-advised drunken deal at a wine party: Sidney will take Robyn's offbeat, laid-back actor boyfriend, Perry Smith, to her wealthy parents' home in Scarsdale, N.Y., for Christmas, and Robyn will head back to Bala Cynwyd, Pa., with Sidney's serious lawyer boyfriend, Will, for the holidays. Things get complicated when Robyn finally meets Will and realizes he is Will Brady, her teenage crush and former next-door neighbor--and even more so when Robyn admits to herself that she's still head-over-heels for him. Despite a far-fetched plot device, the author manages to easily reel readers in from the start, especially with quintessential girl-next-door Robyn and chivalrous lawyer Will. (Sidney and Perry are a slightly harder sell.) Pieces of the puzzle are thoroughly and appealingly mixed up in this well-paced tale, and younger readers and fans of sweet romance will appreciate that the action on the page is limited to innocent kissing." Publishers Weekly
"With a premise that rivals the best film rom-coms,
The Boyfriend Swap is filled with romance, humor and heart -- a delight from beginning to end. Meredith Schorr delivers chick lit gold!" -- Jamie Brenner, USA Today bestselling author of The Forever Summer

"Schorr begins with a wonderful premise: two women swap boyfriends--the type of guys they think will keep their ever-inquisitive parents at bay while everyone is home for the holidays. Then, with each scene, Schorr ramps up the stakes for everything to go wrong--which it does with hilarious consequences. But the way in which Schorr handles both heroines' soul-searching journeys to self-fulfillment--with or without Mr. Right at her side--is why I flat-out loved this book. Trust me, you will too." -- Josie Brown, author of
Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives

"Fast-paced and fun. I loved this charming story."

The Boyfriend Swap is wonderful entertainment you'll want to share with your best friend." -- Karin Gillespie, author of Divinely Yours

A clever premise, interesting, multi-layered characters, romantic sparks of all kinds, and countless LOL moments make The Boyfriend Swap a must-read!

Workaholic lawyer Sidney Bellows and music teacher Robyn Lane are dreading the holidays for different reasons. Sidney thinks if she brings the successful boyfriend she's been keeping secret home to meet her conservative, goal-oriented parents, they will try to hurry the two of them down the aisle while Robyn is sure her folks will continue to disapprove of her struggling actor beau. The idea of switching boyfriends is cooked up one night when both ladies have over-imbibed. In the sobering light of day, Robyn thinks it's a crazy scheme that's doomed for disaster, but Sidney insists it's the answer to all their problems. Robyn is even less keen on the swap when she learns Sidney's boyfriend is also the cutie she lusted after in high school. There's no stopping this runaway train, though, and soon the two faux couples are off to make merry with Sidney's and Robyn's families. What follows is a surprise to all the swap's participants as they start to question their relationships and face some hard truths that may just change the course of their lives.

The journeys of Robyn/Will and Jordan/Perry are equally entertaining and riveting. Can you imagine being reunited with your teenage crush as an adult? Robyn runs through a whole gamut of emotions while spending time with and growing closer to Will. Meanwhile, Sidney wants to wring Perry's neck because he keeps going off-script, teasing and flirting with her, and showboating in front of her family who are completely charmed by him, which was NOT the plan. Most of the comedy in the book comes from Perry throwing curveballs at control freak Sidney, and I was endlessly amused by their combative dynamic, which provided a great contrast to the more poignant Will/Robyn scenes.

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was that the story didn't end when the boyfriend swap was over, it carries on for a few months afterwards so that we can see what the fallout from the scheme is. And it does lead to big changes in the heroines' lives, both personally and professionally. I won't tell you how things work out for any of the couples, but suffice it to say, that there are some twists and turns in the last act that will keep you turning pages and everyone ends up exactly where they should be.

Although part of this story plays out against a holiday background, I think it's one that could be read and appreciated at any time of the year. I got such a kick out of all the characters and Ms. Schorr's snappy writing. If you're looking for a fun, fast-paced read that will provide you with both laughs and feels, this is the book for you!

The first paragraph in the synopsis completely captured my attention--Hallmark? Holiday romances? And of course, you know a swap can only mean disaster, but sometimes it's a good thing and it sure is entertaining to see it all unfold.

Robyn and Sidney couldn't be more different and the same goes for their boyfriends, Perry and Will. I loved seeing their characters come to life and watching their interactions, wondering how they would all manage to pull this charade off and it was hilarious how it happened.

I love digging deep into characters--learning what makes them who they are and seeing how that carries over into their interactions with each other and this one didn't disappoint in that area. Although there is some depth (or fluff) to each one of them, the story stays light and fun and tugs on the romantic heartstrings.

I love a good, clean feel-good romance that focuses on the feelings and chemistry, rather than on the physical aspects and while this story does talk about intimacy in rather vague ways (meaning, not graphic), there is a lot of talk, but it does stay behind closed doors (which I appreciated).

Content (especially for my clean reader friends): there is a good amount of sex talk (nothing graphic and a couple of fade to black scenes); innuendo; kissing. It's sketchy clean--like a PG-13 movie; a handful of moderate language.

Have you ever thought about switching boyfriends before introducing them to your family? That's exactly what Sidney Bellows suggests to Robyn Lane over drinks. Lawyer Sidney knows if she brings home her lawyer boyfriend, Will, for Christmas the wedding will be planned before they open presents. Robyn, a music teacher, knows her family wishes more for her than free spirit actor, Perry.

Wacky hijinks occur, of course. Will is actually Robyn's school girl crush and neither family reacts as the ladies expected. Especially when the well to-do Bellows family is charmed by D-list, at best, actor Perry. All of the supporting characters are fun to get to know. Hopefully one day mutual friend, Anne Marie, gets her own story.

The premise feels predictable, but thers are enough twists that what you go in expecting doesn't go that way. The story flows quickly with witty banter and flirtatious moments with both couples. Meredith Schorr is excellent at telling a story that keeps you engaged and hooked on the characters from start to finish. I can't recommend her books enough as she gets better at her craft with each new book.

Another reviewer called this a "delicious book," and I think that's a perfect description. It's just such a fun and engaging read, sprinkled with interesting musical facts and legal tidbits. I very quickly became invested in all the characters -- Will and Robyn most especially. Even the slightly more self-involved ones had a depth and softness to them that was unexpected and delightful (though I truly loved the line from Sydney about being one of the "villains in this story.")

I really did find myself rooting for all of them to find their own versions of happiness, and the developmental arcs for each character were so satisfying. As soon as the book ended, I went online and ordered more of Schorr's books. I can't wait to read her past & future novels.

There are so many little details I loved about this book and the two very different "fake boyfriend" stories.

Robyn, Sidney, Will, and Perry are all interesting protagonists, though I found it much easier to root for Robyn and Will than for Sidney or for Perry (whose ego probably needs its own ZIP code).

As weird and quirky as they all might be, the characters still feel real, and while I'd personally very much prefer to celebrate Chrismukkah with Robyn's family, I couldn't help watching with a sort of cringing fascination how events unfolded (or rather unraveled) at Sidney's parents' mansion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Because she is made to believe she is the bad person while Will and Robyn are the real culprits ...

Why the author showed Sidney as the bitch and Robyn as the princess, I still do not understand. Ofcourse she kissed Perry. But Robyn was the bitch all along. She was fascinating Will all along. And the way she spoke to Sid as if she s all angel, made me infuriated. I felt sorry for Sid all the way. Because she is made to believe she is the bad person while Will and Robyn are the real culprits who developed feelings for each other, even showed it explicitly, while still in relationships seperately.
