The Cancer Man Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

False hope isn't the cruellest killer.

Emet Gordon knows the pain of loss only too well. It has embittered and destabilised his entire adult life.

Now working as a notoriously harsh critic, his boss sends him to review a self-help seminar led by a famous motivational life coach, secretly hoping it will do him some good.

Surrounded by infectious smiles and positivity, Emet starts to feel his cynicism melt away…

…until he finds that just below the happy, shiny surface of the event lies the bleakest of the bleak…

…promises of a cancer cure through nothing more than a hypnotic talking therapy.

Incensed, he makes it his mission to burn these false claims and charlatanism to the ground before countless people are hurt…

…but nothing can prepare him for the sort of fire he’s playing with.

If you were mesmerised by movies and books like
Magnolia, Trance, Nightmare Alley, Red Lights, and The Manchurian Candidate, The Cancer Man will entrance you deeper and deeper into a disturbing world where the lines between optimism, fear, objective reality, and nightmarish hallucinations grow hazier with every page you turn.

Arton Baleci's work represents something different and, quite frankly, a breath of fresh air in a literary world where the same ideas are often rehashed. The book contains twists that I genuinely did not see coming. The concept itself is refreshing... I mean, a con artist preying on some of society's most vulnerable? It's very contemporary and spookily realistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read that had me guessing throughout!

This was an excellent story, with very believable and relatable characters which I enjoyed getting to know. The plot takes a variety of turns, and keeps you guessing throughout. I pre-ordered the next book straight away as I can’t wait to see where else the story will go. I don’t think I’ve ever done that before, which I think speaks volumes as to how much I enjoyed this book.
Keep writing, and I’ll keep reading!

Really enjoyed this. As a doctor myself who gets patients coming in asking for treatments that ain’t quite “regulation” this was all scarily plausible. Well written, exciting, and I can’t wait for the next instalment!

Compelling read - so many unexpected twists and turns in the plot from beginning to the very end. Yes it's a great read as a psychological thriller but also offers the reader the opportunity to think deeply about life, love, loss, altruism, control, and freedom. If you enjoyed The Silent Patient you will love this.

A very intriguing thriller which really drew me in with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing right up to the end! Having read Arton's excellent Foul series this was great shift further into the psychological thriller genre - am really looking forward to seeing more from him.
