The Christmas Memory Kindle Edition
Avery, a photographer and a barista at The Ground Floor, is falling for one of her most loyal customers, Clare, who works in the same building and comes in for a sweet treat and a kind word most mornings.
When Clare slips and falls on a patch of ice one day, Avery rushes to help her, only to realize that after the fall and a concussion, Clare has gaps in her memory and acts like she and Avery are a couple.
Does that mean she has always felt the same? Avery knows she needs to tell her the truth eventually, but Clare seems adamant about rejecting every attempt to clear up the misunderstanding. And then there are her own, long-held feelings for Clare…
Can they still create the perfect Christmas memory, or will reality catch up to them?

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024This is sweet holiday romance that could easily be a Netflix or Hallmark movie. It is a quick, fun read with likeable characters that you can’t help but root for. The plot sets up quickly and moves at a great pace, and so it was really hard to put down and really easy to read more than once.
To anyone with a concern that this story is a rip-off of the movie “While You Were Sleeping,” it isn’t. There are huge differences in the plot and relationship between the main characters.
DIFFERENCES: (WARNING:::: MINOR SPOILERS)
While You Were Sleeping:
Amnesia character (Peter) doesn’t have amnesia; his family tells him/the doctor he does because he can’t remember Lucy (who he doesn’t actually know).
Protagonist (Lucy)and Peter have only spoken in passing: “Hello,” “Merry Christmas”.
Lucy doesn’t even know Peter’s name until his family tells her at the hospital.
Lucy keeps the secret because Peter is in a coma for most of the movie, and she sees that she is giving his family hope.
Peter has recently broken up with his girlfriend who turned down his proposal.
A friend of Peter’s family knows the truth and tells her to not tell the truth.
Lucy’s supervisor/friend knows, but doesn’t seem to care that she is lying to Peter’s family.
Lucy enjoys the time she and Peter’s brother, Jack are spending together, and they start falling in love, creating a fake love triangle.
The Christmas Memory:
Amnesia character (Clare) actually diagnosed with amnesia by a medical doctor.
Protagonist (Avery) and Clare have met, spoken, developed a friendship and are attracted to each other.
Clare has talked to her family about Avery, and they know Clare has a crush on her (the cute barista).
Avery’s friends and family know that she has a crush on Clare, as Avery has spoken to them about Clare by name.
Both Clare and Avery are both free of romantic entanglements.
Avery’s friend tells her to tell the truth to Clare.
Avery keeps the secret because the doctor told her it would be best for Clare to not correct her memory… And because of her attraction to Clare and because she is finally able to show her love for Clare.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2024Just different enough to set it aside from the usual sapphic Christmas romances. The Christmas Memory is still a quick read with just a touch of angsty suspense and of course a happy ending. Definitely worth a try for a light holiday read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025A sweet holiday romance. Clare is interested in asking Avery the barista when she slips and hits her head. She wakes up to see Avery and thinks they are a couple. Avery is nervous, but wants to be there for Clare whom she has adored from afar. It is an interesting journey to see how the story plays out. I really enjoyed the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024I really enjoyed this light and fun Christmas romance. Both of the main characters were so likable and had you rooting for them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023This Christmas story is such an interesting romance, I've not read one before that involved medical amnesia. Very interesting. It's definitely worth a nice quick read.
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because the ending seemed hurried. The problem a little too drawn out and the solution quite quick. But it's still a good story!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2023This is a delightful Christmas story. Avery and Clare both work in the same building, secretly crushing on each other. Both are afraid to take that first step until Clare, quite literally, slips on a patch of ice. She suffers a concussion and wakes up believing Avery is her partner. Avery is enjoying the misunderstanding but knows she must tell Clare the truth. Clare makes it a little difficult for Avery to come clean as she ignores all attempts to learn what happened...until she does, and she is livid.
It's going to take some family intervention and a lot of Christmas magic to get these two back on the road to forever.
It's a perfect Christmas story and all because Barbara Winkes writes wonderful characters. Whether it's her usual suspense genre or Christmas love stories, she has the talent to weave her own special magic.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2023This book by Barbara is a sweet story about literally falling in love. Clare takes a tumble and wakes up to see the love of her life hovering over her, but are things really as they seem. Avery has been crushing on the beautiful woman that is a customer at the coffee shop she works at. When the opportunity for her dreams to come true falls into her life, will she take the chance to follow her heart or will she come clean with the truth.
A wonderful book that is a change from the usual mysteries Barbara writes. She doesn’t disappoint with this story about a Christmas wish coming true.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet Christmas romance!
This was sweet, kind of like a sapphic reimagining of While You Were Sleeping (please note that I haven’t seen While You Were Sleeping since it first came out several decades ago, so like Clare, my memory may be inaccurate).

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story
A very enjoyable story, if a little short on details sometimes. A bit of extra detail can really help you picture a scene, but that was often lacking here.
The reason I gave it three stars instead of four or five was because the plot was a rip-off of the plot in the Sandra Bullock/Bill Pullman movie While You Were Sleeping. I appreciate that it must be very difficult to come up with a completely original storyline, but this was virtually identical except for the main characters being two women instead of a man and a woman.
Still, a fun and fairly quick read.
