Selected to perform as the Queen of the Wilis in the ballet, Giselle, Dawn Hayes is determined to prove to the other dancers that she is the most worthy of a professional career in ballet. Her dance teacher has trained her up to this point to use her body as it was meant to be—to show off its lines and curves of delicate bone beneath taut skin gracefully. The unspoken essence of classical ballet was taught as a set of purposeful movements aimed at ennobling Man.

But when a new teacher enters the studio, Madame Angulaire opens up a peculiar world of modern ballet and what it preaches. Wrapped up in a sheet, Dawn finds herself rocking back and forth to the tap of her teacher’s foot, trapped in movements that feel bizarre and unnatural, all the while wondering if this foreign movement could be considered ballet.

Through a series of uncomfortable pushes and pulls between teachers of varying esthetic beliefs and an unexpected friendship blossoming with an older dancer, Dawn must learn to choose which artistic interpretation of ballet is the correct one, even if it may cost her a career as a professional ballerina.

Top reviews from the United States

This is the third book I have read by Kaitlyn Lansing as an advanced reader’s copy, for which I would like to thank Ms. Lansing and her publisher, as well as BookSirens. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

I loved the first book of Ms. Lansing’s that I read, “A Man of Action,” and gave it five stars. I read it quickly, savoring the story. As I said in my review of that book, I found it to be riveting, different, compelling, gory, explicit, repugnant, morbid, macabre, and thought-provoking. The next two books, however, have been terrible disappointments. The second book I read, “The Paper Pusher,” was an odd, rambling, disjointed mess.

I enjoyed reading this third book, “The Dormant Age,” until it devolved near the end into a strange, psychotic tale. If I had only read the first two thirds of the book, I would have thought it was great. I enjoyed the story, the characters, the writing, but then right before the last third, in Part 2, chapter VI, the story became implausible and went downhill quickly.

What began as an interesting tale about a young girl’s love of ballet and her quest to become a prima ballerina became a twisted, sordid, unnecessary story about a woman’s psychotic break with reality. I found it to be incongruous and irrelevant to the story. Had this crazy interlude not occurred, I would have given the book five stars instead of the three I gave.

I love books about ballet, it something that always works in a story. I enjoyed the way Kaitlyn Lansing wrote this as it was a beautifully done story. The characters were perfect and I really enjoyed going through this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
