Great start to the series

Great start to the series
An awkward wizard. An aspiring ballerina. And a dark god with a wicked vendetta. The First Dark Sorcerer is the first book in the Whisper Court series by Abby Arthur. The Whisper Court series is a young adult steampunk fantasy, which is a concept that I loved! Abby Arthur executed the mash up of genres wonderfully. If you are fan of plot based fantasy novels featuring wizards, and other magical creatures as well as cool steampunk elements, this is a series you should put on your TBR! I really enjoyed the descriptive world building. Though I was hoping for a bit more romance, there was a little and I think there will be some more in the next book in the series. I am really looking forward to book 2. In The First Dark Sorcerer, we meet our main characters, siblings Clyde and Aylee. Clyde is a young wizard who is determined to become a great sorcerer. Except- he can’t seem to get accepted into any of the magical academies. Aylee is so close to becoming a principal ballerina she can taste it! I loved how determined these two siblings were- both so ready to try and and accomplish their dreams, when the unexpected throws their lives onto new paths! This was adventure heavy, and I really enjoyed that the main characters were siblings. They meet a whole bunch of different characters along the way, and I had a lot of fun with all of them. Clyde and Aylee are both wonderfully fleshed out characters. I appreciated their growth throughout the novel and I found them really easy to root for. Overall, this was a great adventure style fantasy novel that young adult readers should really love. It was refreshing to see a male main character, and I really appreciated the detailed descriptions and world building throughout the novel. The First Dark Sorcerer was great and I am excited to see what is in store for us in the next installment of the Whisper Court series. *Disclaimer- I was sent a complimentary copy of this for free. I was not compensated for my review and all thoughts are my own.

This book had good characters, and good descriptions. I enjoy how the author writes. It is a little bit of a darker fantasy than what I am usually into, but it still had so many other things to keep me reading it and enjoying it.

"The First Dark Sorcerer" is a captivating and thrilling read that I couldn’t put down! This book takes you on an unforgettable journey into a world of magic, danger, and complex characters. From the very first page, I was hooked by the unique magic system and the intriguing plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat.

The protagonist’s journey is both compelling and emotional, making you care deeply about their struggles and growth. The world-building is exceptional—rich with history, diverse cultures, and a sense of deep mystery. The author masterfully blends dark sorcery with moments of light, creating a perfect balance that keeps you guessing.

What sets this book apart is its depth. It’s not just about magic and battles; it delves into themes of power, morality, and the cost of using dark magic. The relationships and internal conflicts of the characters add layers to the story, making it not only a fantasy adventure but also a thought-provoking read.

If you're a fan of dark fantasy with well-crafted characters and an unpredictable plot, "The First Dark Sorcerer" is a must-read. It left me wanting more, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series! Highly recommend to anyone looking for an exciting, immersive fantasy experience.

I couldn't put this book down! The story of Clyde and Aylee Blitzkurr totally sucked me in. I love how Clyde is desperate to make his sister's dreams come true even though his own magic career is falling apart. And Aylee is such a strong character - willing to put her ballet dreams on hold to save her brother!
The whole supernatural world is super creative with all those mermaids, demons and dragon shifters. The ballet scenes were actually my favorite parts though - so beautifully described. I got serious Phantom of the Opera vibes, but with more magic and adventure.
The vengeful god plot kept me on edge throughout. Perfect for anyone who likes fantasy with strong sibling relationships.

I normally find first person narration a bit off-putting, but this was great! I also like the different perspectives. It helped to really develop the characters and drive the story!

This story pulled me in from page one. Clyde and Aylee are such compelling characters, and I loved the sibling bond—so refreshing to see in a fantasy novel. The plot moves fast, the worldbuilding is rich, and the stakes just keep getting higher. I was rooting for them the whole way, and that twist about the vengeful god? Chills.

This book grabbed my attention from the first pages. The writing has great energy, and the characters feel real, with emotion and depth. The world is full of magic and suspense, and every chapter pulls you in more. It’s a strong mix of action, feeling, and fantasy that’s hard to put down. One of those stories that really sticks with you.
