Geoffrey has a problem. All his life he’s lived according to “sensible” sceptical, secular values. Then, his true love left him for a New Age community in Scotland. But it gets worse: now she wants to be a traditional Catholic nun! Geoffrey is bewildered, angry, lost. Until, one Valentine’s Day in Ireland, he meets a mysterious guide--the Gentle Traditionalist. Together they commence a most unusual dialogue of ideas concerning:

•The Heart of the Gospel •The Real Nature of the Church: A Supernatural Mystery •The Crisis in Catholicism today: the Loss of Tradition •The New Age Movement •Catholic Ireland •Why Secularism gets away with murder

Both whimsical and serious, the dialogue in this book offers a probing exploration of the Catholic Mystery, Christendom, and the crisis of the West today. Join us for a very special Valentine’s Day when Geoffrey’s barren, rational world gets turned upside down...

“This is one of the most unusual books I’ve ever read ... written throughout with passion and engagement, with a touching and deep-seated love for Ireland.”--MARY KENNY, author of Goodbye to Catholic Ireland

“As brilliant a guide for the perplexed as this age is capable of producing.”--CHARLES COULOMBE, author of Everyman Today Call Rome

“The Gentle Traditionalist is a book with a ‘strange magic,’ like unto the Ireland it loves and mourns. With unforgettable images and a wry sense of humor, Roger Buck unfolds a tale of whimsical fantasy, melancholy realism, and supernatural joy.”--PETER KWASNIEWSKI, Wyoming Catholic College; author of Resurgent in the Midst of Crisis

“Writing with great wisdom, insight, and a most warm sense of humor, Roger Buck offers us a contemplation of the religious predicaments of our time in the spirit of Chesterton and Belloc. He takes on everything in a charming (and disarming) manner ... a wonderful book.”--MICHAEL MARTIN, author of The Submerged Reality

“To read this work was a joy, and I thank the author for helping me realize that, despite the passing of three generations and 150 years in the Irish-Australian diaspora, my heart is still Irish.”--GERARD O’SHEA, University of Notre Dame, Australia; author of As I Have Loved You

“This striking novel by Roger Buck, set in Ireland, is composed with extraordinary sensitivity and insight.”--COLIN MAWBY KSG, Choral Director of Radio Telefis Eireann (RTÉ)

“An unusual book: part love story, part theological dialog. Roger Buck is that altogether too rare Catholic who understands the importance of the geo-cultural forces that have shaped the modern world.”--THOMAS STORCK, author of From Christendom to Americanism and Beyond

“The Gentle Traditionalist is a tremendous book: moving and humorous, opening up the most profound issues, engaging the most strident of polemics with the lightest touch.”--JOSEPH SHAW, Chairman of the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales

A Gentle and Subversive Hope-Bomb
Roger brings us into the cosiest, and most curious situation we could find ourselves. But what starts as silly soon becomes profound, without ever losing its lightness and gentleness. A very attractive read, with vivid and memorable moments. You'll feel like you've been introduced to the warmest, fattest, and most joyful Grandfather you have never met, but have always known. Give this book to family and friends who are suffering in this colourless and hopeless modern world, it will feel like a hug and will give them someone to have Hope in.

Buck’s dialogue-centric novel gives an entertaining tale of a new age man (GPT) reconciling his beliefs with an old wise Gentle Traditionalist (GT) in the aftermath of relationship problems with a girl who converted to the Catholic Church.

The best thing this book has to offer is clarity regarding how our culture got to where it is. It’s easier to call things ‘complex’ and leave our problems alone then it is to pinpoint causes and identify solutions. This books thesis makes the problem easier to understand then you think - our cultural chaos boils down to a rejection of sacredness and tradition, and without those things we flee to a modern religion that pretends it isn’t religious, but holds creeds and ideas that tarnish authentic human connection, purity of the soul, and dignity towards life.

It also does a good job of breaking down common issues and objections to faith bit by bit, holding your hand as you grasp a ton of historical context and philosophical concepts. By the end of this book, you’ll be able to juggle two truths at once - that human society (Catholic or not) will never be perfect, and that we still need a transcendental value (expressed in Christianity) so that our imperfection doesn’t devolve into utter chaos.

I enjoyed a lot from this book - the authors clear personal biases and cultural interests protruding through the characters, the silliness of some of the characters joining in (Rigid Dorkins and his book ‘the selfish jeans’ especially), and the love story behind it that gave the tale more structure then simply a wish-fulfilling debate where the author’s side inevitably wins.

This book is good for Catholics trying to understand the world, as well as any new agey-lefty friend that won’t be obstinate enough to have a peek at a good story that isn’t too long to read. No matter which side you’re on, I’d suggest you give this book a try.

This is a perfect-sized Saturday read that lifts the soul, broadens the mind, delights the heart. The Gentle Traditionalist re-enchants the world in its own light-yet-profound way, facing serious problems without flinching and clarifying just how dangerous is the reckless ride that late modernity has been taking us on. It sweeps away the excuses many of us offer for not accepting the call to embrace the mystery of being, sacramentality, and divine presence. Here is a path to a better enlightenment than rationalism has ever been able to hawk. There is humor and no coercion. The celestial atmosphere is richer not thinner than what we usually breathe. Can we see through the cardboard world we have constructed that disses and dismisses our ancestors? Can we believe again? I found myself ordering extra copies for friends before I was two-thirds of the way through this touching novel. I am an older, very experienced reader. Most books now weary me quickly even when I am interested in the themes. This one carried me along swiftly to the end in half a day. Far be it from me to declare books to be classics, but I would not be surprised if this book is already becoming one, despite all of its modesty. I recommend this especially to young adults who are trying to size up the messages that are swamping them through the media. Listen to the Gentle Traditionalist before you go making any rash decisions. Your very life is at stake!

The Gentle Traditionalist is a succinct and accurate diagnosis of the wretched disease afflicting the post-modern world and yet it all the while remains entertaining and full of life. Mr. Buck mourns over the ruins of Christendom, and the reader is driven to mourn alongside him, all the while experiencing hope for renewal. Hardly a single issue of the multifaceted crisis we currently weather is forgotten, and topics theological, philosophical, cultural, political, and social are given treatment, though not in great depth in order to achieve the brevity this work aims for, which I think is rather to its advantage. It should be an outstanding tool for the conversion of souls. Unfortunately, many will be prevented form hearing Mr. Buck's message due to either the extent to which their mind has closed upon post-modern dogma or to the great failure of contemporary education to fertilize the mind for the reception of loftier things, or Truth generally. Still, this is likely the best book one could hope for if looking for a brief, thorough, absorbing, charming, and powerful antidote to what ails us. I hope this work will be read by many and considered carefully and deeply so that it may have its desired effect.

This is a book that must be read by all Catholics looking to strengthen their Faith and to understand what the Church is up against in these days of secularism and rationalism. It's very well written, very clear, very "gentle" but not weak in any way.Cleverly instructive too and I found the end most moving.
I am buying several more copies as I think it will help people whom I know to persevere as well as to debate with greater knowledge both the Faith and how it has been (and is being) attacked today.

I've long proclaimed to anyone who would listen, that the people of England suffer every day from the damage done by Henry VIII. This is still a Christian country, but as the book makes clear without our sacraments our faith life is greatly diminished.
As other comments have stated, he's very mistaken about capitalism, environmentalism, and many aspects of Catholic history, but if he can set aside atheism for the one true faith, setting him right on these should e a simple matter.
A great quote: Either you choose your faith or your faith chooses you. Almost all of the modern world has willingly exchanged the jewel of great price for new ideas without intellectual coherence and totally detached from the living experience of real people, for straw.
