The Holly Dates Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,866 ratings

All she wanted for Christmas was a boyfriend for the holidays…
All he wanted was for her to take her crappy first dates elsewhere…

Quirky Holly Jackson was unlucky in love, yet her romantic heart refused to give up her search for companionship—even after her fiancé left her at the altar on Christmas Eve.

Grumpy restaurant owner Kai Kane wanted nothing to do with love. Unfortunately for him, when an eccentric Holly kept entering his restaurant nightly with a different first date, his annoyance grew.

When Kai volunteered to help Holly find a suitor it was for one reason only: to get her out of his restaurant and on to a second date with someone at a different location.

It was all going great until Kai became increasingly jealous of the connection Holly developed with another man. The more Holly fell for Kai’s pick for her, the more overprotective he became.

Kai quickly realized that all wasn’t fair when it came to love and the holidays.
He was going to have to step up his game if he wanted a shot at the ultimate prize—being Holly’s favorite date.

*The Holly Dates is a steamy, full-length romantic comedy.*

Last Christmas Eve, romance writer Holly Jackson's fiance left her at the altar for her best friend and co-author in front of the entire population of her small Wisconsin hometown. Afterwards, back home in Chicago, Holly launches a solo writing career and vows never to date again, though her resolve is tested as the holidays approach; she's lonely, which is only making her ongoing struggle with writer's block worse. The situation becomes desperate after Holly lies to her brother to avoid a pity setup, claiming that she recently started seeing someone and plans to bring him home for Christmas. She hasn't had much luck with dating apps but figures there has to be at least one decent prospect out there, so she sets up 14 first dates in 14 days at a newly opened restaurant near her apartment. Unfortunately, the restaurant's owner turns out to be Kai Kane, a man who lives in her building and isn't exactly Holly's biggest fan. Kai realizes that the only way to get the woman who's driving him crazy (in more ways than one) out of his restaurant is for her to get a second date, so he decides to help her. He creates a set of dating rules for Holly based on his observations of her behavior, which she agrees to test by continuing her series of first dates with men Kai helps her choose from the app. As he gets to know her better, Kai realizes that he wants to be the only one going out on dates with Holly, but can he convince her that they're a perfect match?   When I started reading this book, I was expecting a typical fluffy holiday rom-com (which would have been fine because I love those!), but it turned out to be so much more than that. While there were plenty of laugh-out-loud funny moments over the course of the story, it was also unexpectedly emotional due to some of the past baggage Kai and Holly needed to work through. They were both a little battered and broken, but together they somehow managed to heal. I adored their witty banter and slow burn chemistry, as well as how cute they were once they got past their initial animosity. If ever two people deserved an HEA, it's Holly and Kai, and I was rooting for them the whole way.   I highly recommend "The Holly Dates" for all contemporary romance and romantic comedy fans. It was the first book I've read by this author but won't be the last.

As the year comes to a close and in an effort to try and lift my spirits from an emotionally stressful holiday season, I forced myself to read the holiday themed books so I could hopefully start my 2025 on a better note. I had already decided what my favorite read for 2024 was and had gifted the book to my book loving mother just last week. Interestingly enough the fmc of the book is named Cherry. Then I picked up this book.

I almost didn’t finish it and let me tell you why. Earlier this year there was a lot of hype for a book called Curvy Girl Summer. I read it. And was so turned off by the friends and family of the main characters that I only finished to see if anyone would redeem themselves. They didn’t. The premise of that book mimics this one and I was afraid of the same thing happening.

BAY-BEE!!! When I tell you that is the FURTHEST thing that happened.

It was these two lines/scenes that made me keep reading.

The taxi scene with the Tom ford glasses wearing douche. And the clincher was grandma. Part psycho totally genius!!!

    I laughed, I cried, I swooned, I cheered, I got angry, I felt loved.

Once I submit this review, I will be immediately purchasing the physical copy of this book. I found it on KU but it deserves a spot on my bookcase.

So I’ll look at cherries differently in 2025. Because they brought me more joy than I could have imagined in 2024.

I gave my mother and book bestie running commentaries as I read this book. Apparently my book bestie was already a fan and now my mom is gonna grab a copy.

The writing was perfection. I don’t even enjoy the emotional upheaval of books these days but it was so flawlessly woven into this book that could have been described as nauseatingly adorable. That I’m seriously trying to pinpoint how it was done. The sorcery with which Ms Cherry dropped thee best lines in this book is awe inspiring. I mean FLIP FLIP SLIDE! Girl I laughed so hard. Literally to the final scene, I loved every moment, every character, every action, everything. Just like how Kai looked at his Holly Jolly. I think I’m going to read this book again on January first 2025.

Thank you Brittainy Cherry for sharing your gift. It’s been my favorite one of the holiday season.

Wonderful story, with some great twists. My only complaint is the male lead’s “voice” and storyline is stronger than the female lead. It obvious that the author had a stronger connection with her male lead character, as she seems to spend more time on his storyline. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just something that leaves the book feeling off balanced at times. Otherwise it’s a great romance for any time of the year!

    1. This is my first book by this author, Brittainy Cherry. I am a sucker for Slow Burn, romance novels that allow for us to get both the female and male protagonist point of view in their words. This has all of those elements for me, along with witty banter in perfect comedic timing.

    2. When I first started reading, I found Holly to be a bit annoying. Or so I thought. The more that I read of the book I actually have found her to be endearing. Holly is a kind woman, who is emotionally vulnerable and who wears her heart on her sleeves. The more and more I continue to read the more that I see a lot of parallels between Holly and myself which is I think one of the reasons why I found her a bit annoying at first. Reading about her is helping me to understand how people may see me upon first meeting. The reason I found her annoying initially is because I am in the in between of healed and healing and I believe that healing is a lifelong process. One of my irritations with Holly is that it hasn't even been a year later and she is so focused on dating and external validation rather than sitting in the muck of her feelings (which is I believe a huge contributor to why she for a long time was not having success with getting second dates).

    3. Kai is the quintessential grumpy marshmallow. He's all frowns and direct and rude communication on the outside but on the inside, he is so fragmented by his relationship with Penelope while trying to downplay his feelings for Holly.

    4. I don't think that Kai and Holly would agree with this given where I currently am in the story, but one of the things that is so fascinating about the two of them and the fact that I definitely see them being ENG GAME as the book suggests they will be, is that they are actually seeking the same thing, but their methods differ as to how to get there. Both Holly and Kai really want connection. Holly is willing to continue to wear her heart on her sleeve until she gets that. Kai, on the other hand, hides behind his sleeves because he's so afraid of what that connection can mean and how it could change his life. He's gotten tooooo used to the silence and the solitude. It is fascinating to watch them bumble about in their lives.

    5. Meet-ugly. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I LITERALLY LOLed at that!

    6. Mano, the matchmaker. I love him as if he was my own little brother. ❤️

    7. I loved Holly's parents in general, but I especially love Poppa Phil. I also greatly appreciated for Kai, his interaction with Holly's parents and what that meant for him to see and experience a different version of family.

    8. The shower scene and Kai's gentleness. #Swoon. After the shower scene, the level of intimacy that Kai and Holly were able to reach was beautiful to read. My hope is that all of us get to experience that level of honest vulnerability and have the safety to do so.

    9. I'm thankful that Penelope was able to have Kai be there for her in the way that he was. Often times, we see men leave their wives when they're faced with a terminal illness. Kai truly is one of the good ones.

I have now finished this book and as I mentioned above, this is my first read by this author. This was such a delightful read! I didn't know what to expect from this book, but I felt something good from it and I'm glad that I took the chance to read a new author. I think my favorite part of this book was the honesty and vulnerability of Kai and Holly as they got off to a bumpy start with their "meet-ugly," while having a realistic relationship progression. I appreciate how they supported each other through their parallel heartbreaks, and how they triggered each other in a way that helped them grow individually and to be able to offer the best of themselves to their relationship. This is exactly the kind of mature relationship that I'm excited for in my own future.

I LOVED it. Kai and Holly’s banter had me LMAO.

Holly is left at the alter during her Christmas Eve wedding. Her husband-to-be announces that he is in love with her BFF, maid of honor and writing partner at her wedding. A year later she is basically robo dating and always takes the dates to a neighborhood restaurant.

One day she runs into Kai, who lives in her building and is one of the owners of that restaurant. They have a meet ugly (as opposed to a meet cute). A very grumpy and jaded man, he tells her he is sick of seeing her pick the wrong me and proceeds to coach her. This is where the hilarity and love ensues.

Recently discovered this author and I love her books. I enjoy the banter and goofiness between the main characters and how the relationship develops out of friendship. The characters see and accept each other warts and all. Kai and Holly are my two favourite characters so far. Books to make you believe in love 🫶🏾
