The Host: Book Two of the Virus Series Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

The army base had been an ideal refuge, secure and well-stocked. But with supplies running low and Gus Razor’s worsening mental state, Frank and Lisa leave in search of pastures new, only to end up in the worst place imaginable — the one place Frank vowed he would never return to.

Amy and Ben should have been safe in the secluded cottage. But they’re not the only survivors. Some mean no harm, struggling to survive. Others, though, have a far more sinister agenda.

Book Two of The Virus series is a brutal, graphic journey through a post-apocalyptic world, where zombies aren’t the only evil to contend with.

Damien Lee resides in the historic town of Whitby, United Kingdom. His interest in horror started when his father would relay countless ghost stories and local folklore. Naturally, Dracula’s connection with the seaside town did not go unnoticed either.

After reading the Bram Stoker classic, Damien went on to discover other horror writers, including; Stephen King, Clive Barker, Richard Laymon and Shaun Hutson. Each offering a unique insight into the world of horror, and each inspiring him, in their own way, to become a writer.

Whitby’s gothic ties and rich history also proved to be invaluable influences on his writing, and it wasn’t long before his first short story, Hyde and Seek, was published. Next came The Bed of Tulips, before Damien decided to write his first novel, The Virus.

Frank and Lisa are a great couple, destined for a fairytale life in the English countryside. Don't believe me? Ask them! I love the characters. The bloodthirsty Gus (both of him) is totally lacking in any form of empathy, no morality, not even a suggestion of conscience. The storyline strengthens the supposition that when mankind reaches an apocalypse, the monsters to worry about wouldn't be the infected, it would be other survivors that would be true evil. The basic depravity of humanity would shine above and beyond any kindness or generosity could be displayed. Excellent story, told brilliantly. This is a great read!

Terrific read, carrying forth the George Romero motif that the humans are always worse than the undead.

This story gets better and better. This book is more brutal and darker than the last but it is a zombie apocalypse after all. Mankind is being mankind. The story is so action packed, it's over in a blink since its like watching a movie in your mind. I look forward to more in this series. Damien Lee does a great job in his writing (in my opinion) with how things flow. A++++ Highly recommend. Oh, Gus is freaking nuttier than squirrel poop! The narrator, Simon Aitchison does an amazing job in all the voices and emotions.
TW (descriptions of rape) this was talked about what happened not actual on the pages play by play during assault.

I was give this copy for free but 100% honest review and my own opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Sequel
Reviewed in Australia on October 31, 2024
So I know it’s a trilogy but book 2 was well done. Gus is a bit of a surprise. It’s late as I write this review but I’m keen for book 3 and I’ll be starting it in the morning. I’ve got the audio and it was well worth getting for those interested.

I rather enjoyed the story, it was different enough to keep my attention and then before I knew it I’d finished book 2…

Props must be given to the author, I enjoy a British story even more when the spelling and everything remains British - so well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars On a much darker level than ‘The Virus’!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 9, 2022
So to keep things interesting Damien Lee has introduced a handful of new characters, good and bad, to the fray, each bringing with them their own battles in their fight for survival.
As if the zombie apocalypse wasn’t enough to deal with, the main characters now have the threat of the living as well, each side brandishing a barrage of arms and neither afraid to use them.
With ‘The Virus’ main heel, Gus Razor turning hero in one of the most torturous retribution scenes ever written, ‘The Host’ proves to be far more darker and sinister as a predecessor.
Word of warning: Not for the faint-hearted!

After reading the first book in this series, I was really excited to read this one..... and boy it did not disappoint!!!!!
So much action and detail that as a reader I was fully immersed into the story from the get go.
If you haven't read book one you need to.... then straight into this one, trust me

Love this series; really great to see more British zompoc. Have to say that despite being the bad guy, Gus Razor is great! Tension builds well, cumulating in a fantastic showdown. If you like the zombie apocalypse genre, this well written, well paced story is one for your collection. Come on, where's Book 3!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent second book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2022
As I said in my previous review I really did not find the characters endearing. The character development is so good that I became quiet fond of them by the end of this book. Oh and zombie animals are terrifying
