THE FIRST HYTHARO
A thousand years has passed since the fall of the Hytharo Empire. All that remains of their people are the myths and legends of how they used their magic to call storms to the endless dunes of The Droughtlands.
When Spiric is uncovered among the ruins left by those-of-glass, he must hunt down his stolen memories as he comes to terms with his fate as a Hytharo a millennia beyond his time.
But as the fragments of Spiric’s memories grow bloodier and more desperate, he must determine whether carrying out his supposed fate will cause history to repeat, or if he can forge a new destiny, both for himself and the Droughtlands.

THE WORLD OF THE DROUGHTLANDS
Towers of glass and hyper-machined steel lie buried in the red dunes that sweep through The Droughtlands. They are the remains of an ancient civilisation known only to the surface dwellers as those-of-glass.
Contained within them are magics unlike any of the rune-based magics employed by those of The Droughtlands. It’s said to be the echoes of what wiped the ancient, advanced people out, yet even after countless eons, it still poses an incomprehensible threat to those that brave the tantalising depths.
Instead, a living is made among the sandstorms and scrap metal far away from these places, where the trade of mysterious objects obtained from the ruins is as valuable as it is taboo, often with disastrous consequences.

THE HYTHARO'S LAST SACRIFICE
The arid wastes of The Droughtlands, water is the most precious resource, but not to quench thirst. It is the key ingredient to craft the inks employed in various magics, yet it has been a thousand years since it last rained. It was the final, sacrificial act of the Hytharo people —those whose magic called storms— that sealed all water in the air for it to be breathed. Little is remembered about them, other than the hope they may return and with them, rain.

THE EXPANDED WORLD OF THE DROUGHTLANDS
Ruins within ruins. Worlds upon worlds.
This mantra muttered by those of The Droughtlands also rings true for the books that chart the sand-swept wastes. Each series is largely its own contained adventure, but they will also interweave with the other stories set in this world in hidden and unexpected ways.
Secrets and riddles lie stretched across periods of decades and centuries, both forwards and backwards, offering different perspectives depending on reading order.

About the author

Jonathan Weiss is an Australian Fantasy & Science Fiction author of the THE FLUX CATASTROPHE and THE FIRST HYTHARO series. Ever since being a small boy he hunted for the best way to tell stories, dabbling in film and stop motion before eventually finding a passion for novel writing as a teenager. More than a decade later he’d gathered a bachelor’s degree of Journalism from the University of Wollongong and a career in commercial cloud sales, yet they were never as satisfying as the time spent writing.
With the support of his artist wife and the cacophonic trio of their pet budgies, he’s now dedicated himself to a full-time career as an author. When not writing, Jonathan can be found reading halfway through books and being so satisfied he forgets to finish them, working through the never-ending queue of un-painted Warhammer 40,000 models and attempting to fit far too much food on his tiny barbeque.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024The Hytharo Redux by Jonathan Weiss was such an amazing book! All I knew was that it was Avatar the Last Airbender meets Dune, and boy did it deliver! I loved the world and the characters and the storyline!
This book has a unique magic system and a rich history. The main character, young Spiric, is pulled from the sands one day with little memory of who he is or how he ended up buried. Throughout his journey, he meets trustworthy and dubious people and slowly understands his place in the world. I loved how everything unfolded, and there were so many unexpected twists! I don't want to give anything away, but this was really a perfect fantasy read (especially if you loved Last Airbender)!
This was the first book I've read by Jonathan Weiss, but I'm excited for the second book in this series, and I'm definitely picking up his other books! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars, no question about it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023There's nothing better than an epic story of survival, knowing your roots and lots of adventure. The Hytharo Redux delivers that and more. We meet Grethard, and he seems to discover what it appears as a child, abandoned in a deserted landscape. He quickly saves the child and cares for him. That child is our protagonist named Spiric.
Spiric grows up with Grethard's teachings, but there's one thing, he doesn't remember his past. Suffering from memory loss, he begins an adventure into the unknown. What he discovers is that he's kind was eradicated a thousand years ago, and only he survived. This book had a little bit of everything, adventure, amazing world building, and en epic cliffhanger. I can't wait for book two and see what happens.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2023Yall this was such an amazing first book in this series. The world building is amazing and the characters are even better i felt like I was in the book with these characters!!! I felt this book so much I felt the emotion behind it. Everyone needs to go get this new series. At least this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2023I love a good science fiction book, especially one that makes you think about what you’re reading, and this one does just that.
There’s some great world building in this hefty book. You can really envision the desolate landscape, the author does such a great job describing it. Character development is great as well, especially Spiric’s, as he struggles to figure out his memories and what they mean. I loved Bayreth too, she was such a sassy character.
This book is filled with action and has such a good storyline. If you’re looking for a good dystopian, sci fi book with great characters and world building, this is it. I’m definitely looking forward to reading book 2.
