- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy emotions are all over the place right now. There are so many things this book made me feel, I don't know where to start. This book has evoked some deep feelings/thoughts/emotions and I hope I'm coherent enough to write them down.
I want to start by saying do not read any reviews if you haven't read the book yet (but if you must, this review contains no spoilers, so it's safe to continue reading). I don't want you to risk being spoiled. This book is such an emotional, beautiful, heart-wrenching and amazing book, I wouldn't want your reading experience to be affected by knowing the events that will occur.
No book has ever affected me this deeply. There were so many beautiful themes woven through this story and so many thought-provoking issues and events. I seriously need to reread this one day when my mind is clear, so I can indulge in the beauty and wisdom that's in this story. What makes this book so powerful is how realistic it is. Life can be hard, tough, rough, crude, painful and extremely unfair. With this book, Charles Sheehan-Miles doesn't try to pretend otherwise.
The Last Hour is the third book in the Thompson Sisters series. Each book in the series tells the story of a different sister. All books can be read as a standalone, so don't worry if you haven't read the first two books yet.
This is the story of Ray and Carrie. It's not an easy story. It's an amazingly difficult and hard one. It's an ugly and a beautiful story all at the same time.
Ray and Carrie meet when Ray has just come back from war in Afghanistan. Ray is Dylan's best friend and Carrie is Alexandra's sister (Dylan and Alexandra are the main characters in Just Remember to Breathe). They both feel a connection towards each other and explore it further in the days and weeks to come.
Ray comes with a lot of baggage and issues. The war has come with many consequences that Ray will have to face. The noble thing to do would be to not drag Carrie into his trouble, but he was falling hard for her.
Carrie had made his life matter and gave meaning to it. There was no way he could let her go and move on without her.
Ray and Carrie were perfect for each other. They were the most selfless, beautiful, caring, compassionate, courageous and loving people ever. He taught her to touch the sky. She showed him love and unconditional support.
Like I said, life is not fair and often times it's very unfair. Ray and Carrie are forced to deal with very stressful situations that have the possibility to tear them apart. Both get accused of things they didn't do that could lead to the end of their freedom or career. Through it all, Ray and Carrie stuck together and gave each other hope. They showed each other unconditional love and support. The faith they had in each other nearly killed me.
"Don't worry about all of this. We'll get through it together."
That's what they always said to each other. The good and the bad, they'd get through it together. And in the midst of all the terrible, something even worse happens. On their way to the zoo, they get hit by a jeep and Ray ends up in the hospital. His condition is serious and chances are he might not make it.
"It wasn't fair. None of this was fair. I'd done everything right, my whole life. I'd taken care of the people around me. I'd worked hard. I'd been honest. I'd been lonely, but mostly happy. Until the day I saw Ray Sherman crossing the green at Columbia. Ray had turned my life upside down, and made it mean more than I'd ever imagined. In the last nine months, I'd experienced both the highest and the lowest points of my life. Everything was raw and intense and sometimes truly horrible."
They had only had 9 months together of which 7 were absolutely stressful and hell. They were getting through it together, but now Carrie has to face the possibility that he might not be there anymore to help her through everything else.
"I've spent my entire life taking care of other people. And for a second there, it was like ... it was like he was right here. Like I could feel him." Her chin started to tremble, and then her whole body shook. "I finally found someone who took care of me. And I'm so afraid I'm going to lose him."
While Ray's body is in the hospital, his soul is wandering around. In this book we get both Carrie's point of view and Ray's point of view. The book starts with the car accident and takes us back in time to tell their story through flashbacks.
It kills Ray to see Carrie alone and hurting, but he doesn't know how to make her pain go away. And there's nothing else he wants more.
"I'm waiting for you, soldier."
Needless to say, these scenes broke me. The fear, the hope, the unknown, it was all too much. I wanted so bad for everything to be okay, for Ray to get better, for Carrie to see him open his eyes and smile again. I was hurting right along with Carrie. I kept crying on and off with this book. I was so grateful for the flashbacks, because the story would switch back to one of them when the present got too much for me to handle.
Grab what happiness you can, while you can.
It's crazy to see how fragile life is. How everything can change within a matter of seconds. That when you think you've been through hell and back, there will come a day that you'll realize you never knew what hell really was. No matter how silly you may think some things are, try to appreciate them, because ten years from now they will mean everything to you. Happiness is never guaranteed and it's not something we have a right to. It's something that's being granted, so take it while you can.
"I wanted to move on. Move on to the part where Ray wakes up and recovers from this accident, move on to a place where we could be together."
The war has destroyed many lives and has taken its toll on so many people. It has not only affected the ones sent to war, but also the ones that stayed behind. Charles has done a tremendous job in showing what war can do/does to people and to our world. Ray goes through some shit while he's in Afghanistan and he's faced with a choice that can make all the difference. His decision is what sets the fall of dominoes in motion and leads him to that hospital bed.
"Sometimes you have to make choices, and they're imperfect, but they're the only choices you can make and live with yourself."
Choices. That's what life's all about. It's what life is based on. Some things you can choose and some things you have no choice in, but in the end everything can be backtracked to one single choice you made. It might be irrelevant at the time you make the choice and you may not realize it. But that seemingly irrelevant choice will set in motion a chain of events that will lead to where you are years from then.
Small moment, missed opportunities, things we don't see or pay attention to at the time sometimes have a far bigger impact on our lives than we would have ever guessed in advance.
How do you trace back the chains of responsibility to a point where you could pin it down completely?
This story was about the choice to do the right thing and knowing what the right thing is. How much are you willing to give up to be able to sleep with a clear conscience? The right thing is not always the easy thing to do. Sometimes, the right thing may even be the hardest thing you'll ever have to do. But it's important that you do it, because your soul matters. It's about being able to look in the mirror every day and be proud of who you see. It's about being able to live with yourself and be proud of the choices you have made. Only when your soul is at peace, you can live in your body.
In the end, he did the right thing, even though it cost him everything.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm going to start my review off with a warning: this book is going to take you on an emotional journey that you are not likely to forget anytime soon. You will need tissues... and lots of them. There might even be a need for some alcohol, or chocolate, or ice cream. Whatever it is that comforts you, make sure you have it nearby, because I can promise you, you'll need it. This story is so REAL. The themes here are so substantial. It might sound unbelievable, but it really has been life changing. It has caused me to actually re-evaluate, and take a closer look into myself, and my opinions on sacrifice, love, redemption and forgiveness. Finally it's about the choices we make in life, and no matter how big or seemingly small they are, they always make an impact.
"Sometimes you have to make choices, and they're imperfect, but they're the only choices you can make and live with yourself."
So we are immediately thrown back into the world of Carrie Thompson. If you haven't met her before... don't worry. While this book is part of a series, each one is written as a stand-alone so you will be able to pick this one right up and know exactly who's who and what is what, so to speak. We were first introduced to Carrie and Ray (aka Weed) in Just Remember to Breathe. Yes, it was Alex's and Dylan's story but, I fell in love with Ray within moments of being introduced to him. He'd just come home from Afghanistan and he's by his best friend's side helping him get through a difficult time. He's strong, loyal, and level headed, and I just want to give him a big hug for being there for Dylan. Carrie is, of course, Alex's sister. She is the sister that keeps everyone together, the glue to their family, and I love her. Carrie has been playing the mother role to her younger siblings for years now. The bond between these girls is very deep. She happens to be visiting Alex when Ray is there and the sparks... they fly. It seemed only natural that Ray and Carrie would get together in Just Remember to Breathe. They are kindred spirits, and I was so anxious for their story. I needed to know that they could make a way to be together. They were such good people, always taking care of others, so I wanted them to take care of each other. I needed them to have their "happily ever after."
Within minutes of starting The Last Hour, you are literally a bystander in a horrific accident that has just taken place. I do mean literally. Mr. Sheehan-Miles paints such a vivid picture that I am standing next to that car watching as Carrie and Ray and Carrie's twin sister's Jessica and Sarah are in a terrible accident. What follows this accident can only be described as poignant.
As the hours after the accident unfold, we go from present day, to back in time and re-visit the months since Carrie and Ray met. This story is told in a dual POV which I LOVED. Getting inside both Carrie's and Ray's minds was phenomenal, and it helped me to understand Ray and his choices so much more. This story is so heartwarming and beautiful at times. Watching Carrie and Ray fall in love, and take on life together seriously made my heart happy. But as with real life, not everything is perfect, and wonderful. Ray has just returned from Afghanistan, and we know something devastating and life-changing happened to him while he was there. It's eating away at him, and he is so desperate to right the wrong. Unfortunately, sometimes when it rains, it pours. Carrie is also facing her own problems. She is trying to clear her name after a jealous colleague has made unfounded accusations against her that threaten her entire career. Some of these moments are heart wrenching. My heart aches for both Carrie and Ray. They constantly remind each other that they'll "get through this together," and I cling to those words for dear life throughout this story. Carrie and Ray are faced with difficult, life altering choices, and my heart is so heavy with the decisions that need to be made.
I'm really trying not to give anything away in this review. This book needs to be experienced by the reader. I will tell you that Carrie's and Ray's relationship is so genuine and loving. Carrie opens up her soul to Ray knowing she has placed it in good hands.
"I finally found someone who would take care of me."
Ray is such a stand-up guy in this book at a time when so few are. I admit to swooning over service-men IRL. Regardless of what your opinions are on the military, there are over a million men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line to protect your freedom. Ray is the epitome in my mind of what a soldier should be; strong, trustworthy, courageous and loyal.
This is a story that will have you looking deep inside yourself. It will have you questioning your beliefs and opinions on many subjects. It will stretch you. This book is not taking you on an easy journey. Nevertheless, it is one that you will want to go on. Charles would tell you that this is by no means a "love story." I probably would have agreed with him at first. Now having a little bit of distance from it, I would have to respectfully disagree. No, it's not your conventional love story, but every decision is made based on love and what is thought to be "right." I might not agree with some of the choices, I can even admit to having a difficult time understanding them, but I know they are made by a loving, compassionate person, who is just trying to do the right thing.
I feel as if the Thompson sisters are part of my family. I've experienced their highs and lows with them. We've laughed and cried a ton. I am connected to them on a deep level, and that is just a credit to Charles' writing. I have loved the other Thompson sister's books, but this one is just in a league of its own. It will easily be one of my all-time favorite reads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderschön, traurig, zum Nachdenken anregend ….
Was hätte ich an Ray's Stelle getan? Tja … who know's?
Das Thema Afghanistan-Krieg und "moralisches Handeln" (was ist das eigentlich?) mal in ein ganz anderes Setting eingebettet.
Dieses Bändchen hat für mich noch mehr als 5 Sterne verdient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI will use one word to describe this book and that's Powerful and this book has become one of my Top Reads of 2013.
It has a Powerful story that hits you straight to the heart.
Powerful writing by Charles who surprises me with each book in the Thompson sister series.
And a Powerful ending that will leave you breathless and in tears.
This book broke my heart in so many ways and one Quote in this book hit hard because it is true.
"But where does it start and where does it stop? One side hits, and the other side hits back, and pretty soon you don't know what happened to start all the fighting in the first place."
Charles first book Just Remember to Breathe was my first time reading about War and what it can do to a person and I became a fan of Charles after reading it. And in this first book we get a glimpse of Ray and Carrie so I was looking forward to reading their story.
But what I didn't expect was what Charles did with their story it totally blew my mind and has so many messages in it that I hope people who do read this book get them.
Ray and Carrie have only been together for 9 months and what they go through in those months is totally shocking but the one thing through it all is that their love for one another even though tested Is so strong and you feel it right to your bones.
The story starts with an accident that leaves one of Carries twin sisters Sarah and Carrie's husband Ray in hospital. And the story is mainly told from Carrie and Ray POV's.
They take us back to how they met and how the carried on their relationship and all the things that are thrown at them.
From Ray trying to do the right thing and finding it all thrown back in his face by the people who he counted as friends/family turning on him.
From Carrie having to take leave from her job because of jealousy from someone she went to school with.
From having the reporters and cameras pointed in your face accusing you of things you know aren't true. These two have it tough and it only gets worse after the accident.
The scenes at the hospital are hard and I never in my life want to go through what Carrie does my heart went out to her.
There are a few lighter moments especially between Ray and Sarah and I did find myself laughing with her at some of the things that she says and does. Also between Ray and Daniel what he does for that boy well it was a hard choice but when you read the book you will know why he did it. And I personally can't wait to read Sarah's story.
It was also great to catch up with Dylan and Alex and Crank and Julia to see that they are all doing well especially Dylan as he went through a lot of what Ray did in Afghanistan. It was also great to see Sean (Crank's brother) doing well and being married. And to finally meet the mysterious sister Andrea I can only imagine what her story is about but I will look forward to seeing what Charles comes up with.
Throughout these books there is always the love these sisters have for each other it's strong even though they all live in different parts of the world they all know they can count on each other. And in this book you can see that Carrie has been the one to be there for her sisters the one they count on but when she needs it more than anything they are more than welcome to give it back.
And then we come to the ending I'm even in tears now thinking about it because it seriously is heart breaking that's all I'm going to say as you will have to read this truly amazing book for yourself and oh have tissues at the ready.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCharles Sheehan-Miles you are an evil, evil, twisted, evil, evil, heart breaker!
Almost anything I say about this book is likely to spoil it for anyone who might be deciding whether to read it or not but sometimes things have to be said, so I'm going to say them.
This book was one of the most beautiful, heart breaking, compulsive books I think I have ever read.
It pulled no punches - events that took place in Afghanistan are covered in their full, horrific, at times gory, detail and portrayed the physical and mental anguish that rarely seem to be mentioned, but that affect the service personnel serving in war zones and the ramifications these events have on their lives (if they are lucky enough to survive) once they return home. That is Ray's story.
Then there is Carrie. A very pretty, extremely tall (yes that's relevant sort of!), intelligent, scientist who, after getting her Doctorate and moving to a new University to continue her research etc, discovers that people are more willing to judge her by her looks than her intelligence and gets accused to serious academic misconduct.
The two meet, courtesy of Alex (Carrie's sister) and Dylan (one of the soldiers in Ray's fire team) (this happens in Just Remember to Breathe), and fall in love. In the space of the next few months all kinds of sh*t hits the fan and leads to a Court Marshall and a terrible car accident.
The whole story is told, mostly in flashbacks, by both Carrie and Ray and the ending left me in floods of tears wishing that somehow maybe if I turned another page the author will have decided to change his mind on the whole outcome and use some kind of literary licence to give the couple the Happy Ever After that they deserve but of course this doesn't happen.
So yes, Mr Sheehan-Miles, you are evil!
The book is exceptionally well written (ok a few minor typos but no more than that)and one I will definitely re-read (having stocked up on tissues first) but if you are still wondering whether to read it, make sure you have read Remember to Breathe first.
Oh and I want to know why Andrea is living in Spain!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a story!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI can't remember the last time I cried over a book, but this one left me emotionally drained. It is the third book of the Thompson Sisters series I read and the characters are beautifully painted, as in the first two stories. There are so many emotions pouring out of this story! It's a wonderful, sad love story, it gives a tiny insight to the horrors that war veterans have to live with, it captures the crazy dynamics of a family..... Make yourself comfortable with a glass of wine, make sure you have tissues handy and enjoy an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Choices
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSaturday nights in our house is a time for catching up, having a good meal, discussing what the week has brought us and inevitably I share with my husband what books I have read.
So when he asked me what I had just finished reading I gulped and began to articulate the words to describe the Last Hours by Charles Sheehan-Miles. He ended up sitting on the floor with me and a box of tissues whilst I tried to blubber my way through this story. He smiled and said "good book then".
A "good book then" does not begin to describe this story. Neither do the words "amazing" "awesome" or "wonderful" it goes far beyond these words. I don't know how many of you will read this without bawling your eyes out. It was deep, detailed and it ripped my heart to shreds.
Charles Sheehan- Miles takes us through and emotionally charged story of Carrie and Ray's love for each other. It incorporates a parallel story of the present, the past and the future. Carrie and Ray's characters are deep, real and very solid but this story focuses on doing what is right even though you know it will hurt others and the people you love.
Life for Carrie is extremely good; at 27 she has the world at her feet. A completed PHD, a fellowship and a husband she adores. But as we all know when we find this kind of happiness life has a way of bursting that bubble. When a jealous colleague jeopardizes everything she has worked for Carrie's happiness unravels. To add to this a secret that Ray has brought home from Afghanistan rear's it ugly head and Ray is hounded by the Army and the FBI.
This was a gutting wrenching emotional read and deserves more than 5 stars. Charles Sheehan-Miles has a fantastic writing voice which needs to be heard but what I also love about this author is that he doesn't take forever to release the next story. He must write fast and furious and all I can say is keep them coming Charles, just keep them coming.
I loved it.
