The Lie : a bad boy sports romance (Washington Wolves: Next Gen) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 6,468 ratings

Rule number 1 for the team owner’s daughter? Don’t date the players.

Especially not hotheaded tight ends with tattoos and impulse control problems.

That’s why Dominic Walker is completely off my radar. Sort of.

Babysitting the team troublemaker when he’s forced to volunteer for the foundation where I work means I can’t exactly avoid him.

I wish I had though. Because once I get to know Dominic, it’s almost impossible to ignore the feelings he brings out in me.

Pretty soon, I’m breaking all my rules. I just have to hope he doesn’t break my heart in the process.

Bad boy with a big heart!!
5 out of 5 stars
Bad boy with a big heart!!
I read this book as a stand alone and am totally and completely committed to reading the Bombshell series which has been on my TBR for a while. This new book takes place several years after the Bombshell series ended and one of the lead characters is the daughter of the first couple in the pervious series which makes it all the more exciting. In the story the two main characters, Faith and Dominic, have been anonymous pen pals for years and when they meet in real life their personalities clash big time. So this is like a fun combo of both friends to lovers and enemies to lovers with major secret you’ve got mail themes. I have only read a handful of Karla Sorensen's books but I think I can recognize her style now. She has this really beautiful writing with some deep emotional stories that seem to come at me from page one. With that said the story isn't one long sob fest. There is a perfect balance of the emotional stuff with the swoony stuff and plenty of that steam build up. The hero, Dominic is a pro football player who is traded to the Washington Wolves. He has a bad reputation so on the surface he comes off as this big bad wolf but underneath he is a soft and cuddly big hearted romantic. Faith is the daughter of the Wolves owner and tasked with keeping Dominic in line. Their meet cute was charged and set the tone for the rest of their interactions in a great way. I really loved Faith as a character who comes from this super well of family but who is humble and independent. The story was one I will definitely read again and I’m excited to see where this new series goes.

FMC: Faith Pierson, daughter of the team owner, director of her family charity
MMC: Dominic Walker, tight end
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Pages: 291
Tropes: Football, Grumpy/Sunshine, pen pals, enemies to lovers
Setting: Seattle, Washington

Thoughts: I could not read this book fast enough. I found myself forced to slow down because I was so interested by what would happen next I was missing all the little things that made up Dominic and Faith’s story. Dominic turned out to be my favorite kind of book boyfriend, the grumpy jerk who turns out to be hiding some trauma and a heart of gold.

After reading her parents’ story, I really enjoyed seeing Faith as an adult. I loved her relationship with her sister, Lydia. It brought some comedic moments I wasn’t expecting. I also loved the adult relationship she had with her dad and her stepmom. I really liked how supportive they were of her and the way they let her make her own decisions, even if they may not understand or agree with them at the time.

I really enjoyed the pen pals trope. It was fun to see Dominic try to walk his bad behavior back and then not know when to tell Faith he was actually Nick. His vulnerability made this book what it was and I liked the way Faith handled the “Lie”. Dominic needed to work on his own triggers before he could be confident in his relationship with Faith and I loved that.

Overall, a great book and the perfect couple to start the next gen series!

ARC was kindly provided by the author and her team for an honest review!

Welcome back to the world of the Washington Wolves!

The Lie is a continuation of one of my favourite sports themed series (at least form the past two years). The story follows Faith Pierson (yes, the daughter of one the previous heroes in the series) and Dominic Walker, the bad boy new guy in the football team.
Let’s just say, the premise of the book was intriguing enough to get me hooked, as it contains a few of my favourite tropes:
• bad boy/good girl
• grumpy hero /sunshine heroine (You guys, he even calls her sunshine! What else can you want?)
• enemies to lovers /friends to lovers (But this part wasn’t as dominant as I’d predicted before reading the book.)
• kind of forced proximity (They have to spend time together, so it counts!)
• completely smitten hero
• finding the right person to break one’s own rules (Faith had no intention of dating a footballer.)
Having previously read the first three installments of the series, I knew what I was getting myself into with Karla’s book. The storyline is streamlined, there will be no extra suspension just for the sake of it, the hero will be drool-worthy, and most importantly, there will be banter between the main characters. Come on now, what is a romance book without a bit of a back and forth?!
Dominic had/has a chip on his shoulders, which made him a bit temperamental, had him acting out just for the sake of it. He comes back to his hometown to seek kind of a redemption, which he needs both professionally and in his private life. Faith is struggling to accept herself in her new job, given her last name and the reputation that comes with it, it’s not an easy thing to adjust yourself to.
When Dominic acts out on his first day with his new team, the owner of the Wolves – who is also Faith’s mother – reprimands him by asking him to volunteer at Faith’s project. Allie hopes Faith can influence him to be the best version he can be. As their initial meeting started on the wrong foot by him being downright rude to her, I was really curious how the romance aspect of the book would come to be.
I must admit, I liked Dominic’s approach – go, get the girl, no questions asked – and who could blame Faith for falling all head over her heels when having such potent male want directed at her. The nice touch of Dominic being a grouchball around everybody, but showing his true colours in the proximity of Faith was *chef’s kiss*.
The twist in the story was known from almost the beginning, and as I turned the pages, I was waiting for the bomb to explode. But I think, in retrospect, we needed a catalyst of sorts to balance out some underlying issues and feelings that were unresolved beforehand.
The author really shines when it comes to family and friends relations, her dynamics between past MCs and the way she ties in the new characters to a known, loved book universe is admireable – she immediately wants me to read the next installations of the series. Even without mentioning potential future pairings. Having said that, I’m excited about Lydia’s story, the trope seems kinda fun.

I fell in love with Dom all over again, I wanted to be besties with Faith, and I loved how their dynamic. I’m so glad I chose to re-read this one (again) because it’s now an all-time favorite sports romance!

Updated review, 11/2022

[4.75 Stars] Hands down, one of my favorite sports romances I read this year! Karla Sorenson wrote a great book with believable protagonists, palpable chemistry, and intriguing relationship and personal development.

I love almost anything with the "You've Got Mail" trope, and I thought The Lie did a fantastic job with it, but I still question Dominic letting it play out the way he did. If I have anything negative to say about this book, it would be that Dominic needs more backstory.

Why is he so angry?
Why is he so afraid of good things in his life?
Why is he self-destructive?

I wish Karla Sorenson had incorporated extra chapters to answer those questions, but I loved his character arc. I appreciated that he took the time to contemplate, make changes (although he probably needed to try therapy instead of relying on Faith to point out his issues), and grow into a version of himself he liked. And credit to Faith for her emotional maturity and for not trying to fix Dominic's problems for him.

I loved Karla Sorenson's writing, and The Lie is a book I loved more the second time. I look forward to reading more books from her.

Original review, 5/2022

[4.25 Stars] SO GOOD! I found myself smiling almost the entire book because I couldn’t help myself. I love the You’ve Got Mail meets the sports world vibe of this book. The characters were both so believable and their chemistry was written so well! Will definitely read more by this author.

After reading all the previous books and loving them , I knew I would love this one but what i didn't expect was how good it would be. This author knows how to extract emotions out of you and making you go through the emotions of her characters. I loved the chemistry, the tension and the love between Faith and Dominic their story surpassed my expectations. She doesn't just write romance stories there's always a cause or an issue that she brings light to and show us how her characters get through it . Her stories play out like movie reels they live in your head and keep on playing back and back again

I really enjoyed the reading, the book its very similar to the others at Washigton Wolves Series (and the Ward sisters). This book is the firs of the younger generation and tell Faith's story.
Yes, it made me almost scream JUST TELL HER YOU IDIOT a few times but it wasn't a bad type of suspense. It's fun to see the characters from the other books appearing as well.
You can read it as a stand alone but I definitely recommend read all the books, they are all great.
