Guardian (The Lone Pack Book 1) Kindle Edition
Hawk put everything he had into fulfilling his father’s ambitions, almost dying in the process. After a year spent recovering, he has one thing left to do before he returns to the army—get his childhood home ready to be sold. The last thing he expects to find is an omega and his protective older brother hiding out there. Instead of chasing them off, he takes them under his wing. Between Damon’s anger and Jesse’s fear, he knows they’re running from something. As he coaxes Jesse out of his shell, his desire to help becomes something more.
When Jesse finds himself pinned to the ground by the scariest alpha he’s ever met, he doesn’t even try to fight. That always makes things worse. But beneath Hawk’s gruff demeanor is a gentle alpha. Drawn to Hawk’s caring nature, he wants to hold on to him and never let go. Only Hawk seems determined to keep him at arm’s length.
But an unexpected heat—and its not-so-unexpected consequences—changes everything.
Guardian is the first book of the Lone Pack series. It follows on from The Lost Pack, but you don’t have to have read the previous series to enjoy this one. It contains mpreg, some mature themes, and scenes not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen.

About the author

Claire Cullen is an author and aspiring baker. Since she was a toddler, she has loved making up stories. Getting them down on paper proved a challenge in the early years when her preferred medium was finger puppets. She moved on to pen and paper, and later to keyboards, and hasn't looked back since, except for occasional bouts of nostalgia.
Claire loves to write strong, Alpha males with protective streaks a mile wide and counterpoint them with love interests with the inner strength to survive the trials life has thrown at them.
Most of all, Claire loves a happy ever after (but she'll be content with a happy for now).

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNothing like accidentally starting a pack. Thrown into the deep end in more ways than one…try 5 ways!!! Fun to see Brax and company back again.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed the lost pack and was happy this was in the same world. This book was great. I liked that they are a small pack that needs to build, it leaves room for so much that can happen.
I felt the ending was a bit rushed and had a couple of questions such as did he reach out to anyone? What about Cass how could he just stay? has he already discharged or was he a civilian and his contract is up? Doesn’t he have stuff and a life he has to make arrangements for moving there. Did the paperwork get processed for both the bond and processing out of the military? I reread the book specially to see if I missed those things. I would have reread anyway for fun but when I finished I felt I missed something. I am going to assume the paperwork processed and wait to see what the next book brings.
Reading the lost pack series may help explain the world and the different roles the alphas and omegas play within a pack which makes some of Damon’S comments and behaviors make more sense.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGuardian is book one of The Lone Pack, but so much of the world building is done in The Lost Pack, that I'd encourage any reader to think of it as almost book 4 in that series, with Guardian switching to focus on a new pack that builds from the ground up. Alternatively, read this one first, then go back and read those three while we wait for the next in the series.
There's no cliffhanger, although there are obvious spaces for the next books to go. (Damon and Cass will need sweethearts, and there will likely be more characters coming from Hawk's past.) I'm interested in seeing if Kyle has a role in their future, and how that might affect the Sheriff, but all in good time.
I like this author for shifter mpreg and A/B/O worlds. There are almost always buckets of babies, fudge brownie levels of sweetness, and at least a few opportunities for someone to roar protectively and take some swipes at a bad guy. I like that she doesn't feel the need to over-explain omega anatomy, and that in her world, the babies shift early and often. I mean, it's adorable. Poof! It's a baby hedgehog.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'll say this book is worth reading. It is quite heavy handed though. It didn't needed to be quite so long and drawn out as it was. The story was a great concept. The only problems I had with it was.
1. The lack of shifter lore, For instance Hawk should have scented that someone was in his house way before he got inside he was also in the feline category he was a tiger so feline senses is very sensitive and he would have definitely picked up on a fox shifter being in his house there's a few other shifter related problems I had as well but that's definitely one of the biggest ones.
2. Jesse's heat cycle was wonky, he had never had one which is fine. But most shifter lore states clearly that a "heat cycle" should come upon the subject in a cycle and last until said subject is insured the full cycle or has become "seeded" (pregnant)
3. Damon was very wishy-washy too me
.he flipped from being a great brother to and absent one more times then you could count it was super annoying.
4. The "pack pregnancy". While I had read a few stories detailing this (and baring each author tells a different take on it) seemed a bit shakey and unsure.
5. The "human" aspect of the story was made weird. It was like humans were there but not there at the same time. They spoke about not showing signs of the pregnancy and being seen but it just felt really off. I prefer the stories were it's made to feel as natural as possible and not so distant and off handed.
I would like to read further into this group. And do hope to in the future read about Damon finding a "mate"
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI Loved This Story. It left me smiling. Hawk is a Military Alpha. He's returned to his Grandpa's orchard to tie up loose ends before he's deployed again. Jesse is an Omega who is on the run with his brother. The brothers have had a tough life. Nothing has ever been good, except for the time they spent at the orchard. Every fear Jesse has ever had seems to be coming true when Hawk shows up. This is a story about running from life. Going back to the place from your childhood where life was simplistic and safe. This is MAGNIFICENTLY written and heartwarming. I loved these characters. I hope there are more books to follow. I'm a series junkie and CLAIRE CULLEN has the gift that keeps on giving. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSo far, even though it’s super cookie-cutter, I enjoy it better than the previous series.
I felt barely any growing connection between the MCs in the first two booms of the last series, but this book does the slow burn thing better, gradually letting Jesse and Hawk get to know each other and have alone time.
This series was different since the mate connection was both unwanted and denied and this group of shifters has no knowledge of packs. Instead of starting out a series with a bunch of interconnected people, we are starting alone and will watch as a lack is grown from nothing in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed reading the start of a new series. Hawk, an Alpha, finding two brothers, Damon (Alpha) and Jesse (Omega), squatting in his grandfather home. Hawk being an Alpha, help the Omega through his heat. He becomes pregnant, not one or two babies, but five. Then Hawk's friend Cass, informs him, that he has created a pack, something that is not allowed. Even though this book ended with a HEA, with the help of friends, and the birth of all five babies. I have a feeling that this the beginning of a very interesting series. I can't wait to see what kind of pack they created. And, also what kind of problems, the brothers father and Hawk's father being to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars unexpected kindness
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReally enjoyed this story I actually thought there’d be a lot more angst but maybe that’s yet to come not that it’s a bad thing I’m all for a good happy ending. I’d like to see Damon get a mate and wow 5 babies in 1 hit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor all alpha/omega stuff out here it's pretty nice but it's a bit low key about well everything. While it easy to read I feel like it would have been just as easy to stop in the middle and go on about my day. Don't want to sound mean since I'm sure the author spent time and effort writing this and it was definitely appreciated by me. It's a cute book to pick up if you have Kindle unlimited but don't expect anything super dynamic or detailed.
Turns out I've read the first book in the companion series and they give sort of similar feel: nothing is wring with the story just not very exciting (I think because characters are sensible there XDDD).

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, low drama first in the series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've been a big fan of Claire Cullen for a while now: she's adept at using her genre to point out inequality and inconsistencies in society.
In this novel, a scarred military alpha discovers a sweet omega and his brother squatting on his land.
Hawk gradually gets Jesse to trust him, by showing that he respects Jesse as a person, and doesn't view him as lesser or as a thing to be possessed like so many in the books world.
In turn, Jesse cares for Hawk and shows him it's okay to hope, love, be vulnerable.
The romance happens slowly over a few months, and their road to happiness is hampered by interfering parents and unexpected surprises.
I felt the pace was lovely in this: Claire knows what to leave out and what is important to develop the story (or her editor is a genius!).
Definitely looking forward to the new series, to see how it links in with the military threats from the Lost Pack and also to see who turns up to join Hawk's pack.
