- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is one of the most exciting horror/supernatural novels I have read. What is even more impressive, is that it is Ms. Lee’s debut novel, though she is now a very seasoned author. There is both a compelling plot and wonderful characters introduced in this first of the Gabriel Davenport series. Often a book has a forte of one over the other, plot or characters, but Beverley Lee has mastered both, even early on in this first book. I think in a good horror story, you need a great plot as the architectural underpinning of what is happening and why. We have to suspend disbelief when reading the supernatural, and a good plot allows us to do so. This book is book one of the Gabriel Davenport series and there are now two more available: A Shining in the Shadows and the Purity of Crimson. The ending of the first book, which is indeed the tale of how Gabriel Davenport becomes the larger than life character he is destined to become, is so thrilling, that I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
Gabriel’s parents decide to move into the country to give their son a secure and happy childhood. But something terrible happens, a terrible Evil, and Gabriel’s childhood is destroyed and the course of his life permanently altered. The Reverend Noah Isaacs, who is witness to the horror of the Davenport’s tragedy and knows at least part of the truth, rescues the baby Gabriel and tries to protect and help heal Beth, Gabriel’s now very psychologically damaged mom. With Noah’s connections, Gabriel grows up under the care of a most unusual man, Carver, in a most unusual house, with others who have special gifts and powers. We meet other wonderful characters, such as Olivia and Ollie, a brother and sister. Gabriel is kept in the dark about the work Carver does, but now Gabriel is entering young adulthood and everything will change.
Gabriel’s life in once again in danger from the original malevolent force that cursed his infancy and destroyed his family. This story is a full on battle of good and evil at its best. The amazing character of Clove now enters the story. He is a vampire and my most favorite character! The Dark Force threatening Gabriel is also Clove’s nemesis. The second half of the book becomes almost unbearably suspenseful, frightening and yes, horrific, with a climatic ending that is truly stunning, setting the stage for book two in a most dramatic and satisfying way. Gabriel must choose between pure darkness and a most masterful vampire. If you like the supernatural and horror genres, you will SO love this book.
And don’t miss her 2020 novel: The Ruin of Delicate Things. Fabulous!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you've read this book already, then you will recognize I have the wrong colored feathers falling, but this just worked so perfectly! If you have not read The Making of Gabriel Davenport and you're in to paranormal, supernatural thrillers, then you should get it when you take your next book budget for a ride. I can happily say, this book put me in mind of Alfred Hitchcock! There was something going on
So the story is about more than a young man. It's about a process and revenge. And maybe even a bit of young adult attitude and the stealing of a soul- a lot went on and came together perfectly. You see, Gabriel lives in The Manor, a place that studies the paranormal and supernatural. Each resident, other than the curator (Carver), has a talent that assists in discovering and possibly resolving unnatural occurrences. While there, he's continuously observed by things unseen. He's also under protection - been under protection since infancy and never told why.
While he's dealing with such secrets and insecurities, his mother is tucked away in a room in the same home, completely disconnected from reality. Or is she? Things talk to her and convince her to do things, where the ones who care for her can't even carry on a conversation! Gabriel's father, dead fifteen years, decided to pay everyone a visit too. HOW DOES THIS ALL COME TOGETHER?!! Sounds crazy, I know and you don't exactly get all of the answers, thanks to the ending, but I have a feeling I'll be finding out as soon as the follow-up hits shelves and Kindle!
Be sure you grab yourself a copy of The Making of Gabriel Davenport as soon as you can. Find out what all the hubbub is about! On to a new read.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow! This is not your typical vampire story, but a fantastic contemporary horror/gothic centering the journey of a young man with a tragic past and an unsure future. The characterization is excellent in this novel. From the very beginning, when we see an ancient, malevolent entity stalking Gabriel as an infant, we get the sense that he is something special. Beverley Lee draws the (sometimes) wavering lines between good and evil so richly in this story, I was riveted from the start.
The other characters are just as fully formed as Gabriel. In the early scenes, we meet Beth, Gabriel's mother. Her fierce protectiveness of her son--even when it costs her everything--is a theme that carries through to the end of the novel. I also loved Noah, the priest who embodies compassion and honors his role as the shepherd of his community, even when his own faith is shaken. Carver, with his wisdom and knowledge of the esoteric, who creates a safe haven for young people with unusual psychic gifts. Clove, the benevolent master vampire and his fatherly protectiveness over the young vampires in his coven.
The setting is richly drawn and cozy at the same time--the English manor house, the village and its inhabitants, the farmhouses and fields. All of my senses were engaged while reading. I truly cannot wait to read the rest of the novels in this series. They're the kind of horror I enjoy most--realistic (even when the paranormal makes an appearance), atmospheric, and filled with characters you are still thinking about after you finish reading. I can't believe it's taken me this long to discover Beverley Lee's work. She's absolutely brilliant.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe writing of this novel was pretty good. However, from a terrific beginning, I felt the plot got a bit convoluted. It held quite a bit of excitement but lost some of the mystery and spookiness that it started with. And then came the ending which I really didn't like. I see that it got rave reviews from everyone else. I guess the ending was just a bit too dark for me. If not for that, I might have gone with four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding debut novel!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis was a brilliant debut! As a constant reader & a somewhat writer, I truly appreciate the details Beverley Lee has put into this story. I love when an author can transport the reader into the setting with such ease. I was enthralled with the atmosphere of this entire story from beginning to end! I could envision the landscapes, the buildings, especially The Manor! I LOVED the library (what else is new?) & picture immersing myself within a book for hours upon hours, vampires & the like roaming the halls. No demons, please!
Lee's ability to create multidimensional characters is superb! There is such a wonderful cast of characters that I truly loved -- Gabriel, Moth, Ollie, Beth, Noah & Clove! Dear Clove. My absolute favourite! I so look forward to *hopefully* finding out more about his backstory & how he came to find Gabriel.
Also? I am shipping Gabe & Moth like FedEx! Please make this canon, dear Beverley Lee! ::fingers firmly crossed::
This was an utterly thrilling read, especially the last 100 pages! I did not want to put it down. I enjoyed the short chapters, as I felt they really added to the fast-paced storytelling. The only problem is, the book was too short! I wanted MORE!
Atmospheric & haunting, thrilling & intriguing. I had no idea what this was going to be about & I was beyond pleasantly surprised as it was all unveiled! This is my kind of book. I am awaiting the sequel with bated breath! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars You NEED to read this book!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI highly recommend this book to anyone with a taste for the supernatural. I grew up a very superstitious person and afraid of ghosts and demons, so naturally I gravitate to a good supernatural story, like this one.
This book was thrilling from front to back and filled with characters to love, hate, and be afraid of.
I thoroughly enjoyed Gabe and wished I could see more of him in the book.
Some characters I didn't like, such as the twins, and Carver. Maybe they took too much time away from Gabe, or maybe they were actually just not my type of people. You'll have to read to find out.
All I can say that despite my character preferences, the book was well written. It was extremely well written and I cannot wait to read what happens next.
I have an absolute soft spot for Moth. Beverley has made me absolutely fall in love with him and I think he might be my favorite of the book. He's another one I can't wait to see more of!
I don't want to spoil anything, so if you like mystery and superstition, ghost hunts, and demons, this one is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, fun, well written book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’m notoriously bad at this, but I want to try to review this book without giving away any spoilers. so if I seem vague, please bear with me. Honestly, its better that you go into this book blind. Trust me. Don’t read any of the blurb and certainly don't read any of the sequel’s blurb as that will spoil the surprise ending of this book. Is “blurb” a recognised word for the plot summary found on the inside covers or backs of books? ah well, I digress.
So this book covers Gabriel's early life and serves to introduce some characters that I guess we will see in the following books of the series, and yes, it is a series so we have more to look forward to.
The opening passages are incredibly atmospheric, I know (hope) Bev won’t mind the comparison, but it strongly reminded me of early James Herbert in the atmosphere. If you liked the spooky sense of dread that came with The Survivor, you will love this.
The writing is very easy to get into. I can sometimes find it hard to allow a book to “pull me in”, to achieve that suspension of disbelief that most horror fiction requires, but this one did it easily. I just categorised this book as Horror, but that doesn't mean its going to be laced with gore and viscera. In fact there is very little nastiness in this book. Sure, there are some shocking scenes, or maybe powerful is a better word than shocking, but in the main this book trades on atmosphere rather than blood and guts.
One of the things that Bev accomplishes well is the treatment of the subject matter. It is a well trodden path, lets not beat about the bush here, but the direction taken by the novel is still fresh enough to be interesting. I’ll get this out in the open now, I’m a sceptic. I don't believe in the paranormal, ghosts, ghouls, vampires, spirits, tarot, astrology, UFO’s, monsters (other than the human kind), demons or any of that other fun stuff. Yet I still enjoyed this book very much, this is a testament to the writing which creates a world where at least some of these things do exist, and even a cynic like me can believe in that world whilst reading the book. It never feels silly. It never overdoes it.
So my recommendation? read this book. Its a fairly quick read, Its a fun ride, it’s very well written, the characters are interesting and well drawn whilst still leaving some room to grow and develop as the series continues. The only caveat I have is that is a book for after dark. Read this when night has gathered. You don't want the sun intruding, now do you?
5 stars all the way. I cant wait to get my hands on the follow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well drawn characters, a plot full of secrets and dark turns, and oodles of atmosphere.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe intriguing title stirred my initial interest in this supernatural fantasy/horror story. A couple of chapters in I got that jolt you feel when a story reels you in and I was desperate to find out what would happen next to the Davenport family, especially Gabriel, the titular character. Early on the story elicited that delicious sense of dread when you know something wicked is coming the characters’ way.
With well drawn characters, a plot full of secrets and dark turns and oodles of atmosphere, due to the author's excellent descriptive powers, I was thoroughly entertained. The use of multiple points of view can sometimes be a difficult thing to master in a debut but this author used them to full advantage to keep the action at a thrill-inducing pace. Judicious reveals and a rising sense of menace kept me glued to the story right through to the very end. Bravo to Beverly Lee!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and intriguing
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTo be honest, Urban Fantasy have always been one of my favorite genres ever. One day I came across this saga; there were wings and said wings were grey and black and my mind just started being annoying to the point that, no shame at all, next day I was on Amazon looking for the books.
I genuinely thought that fallen angels were going to appear somewhere, at some point. I was literally dying to get some of the old dark soul that has to save someone pure in order to get their wings back, some old style drama and angst that have always been my cup of tea when it came to this kind of novels, but.
It just didn't happen. And I wish I could say that this was the reason why I spent pretty much the entire time on the verge of tears, but that would be a lie, because the series was so good I actually cried because it was over and I wanted more. So let me get you through it and let me vent a little bit, so that maybe you will understand why Gabriel Davenport's story became one of my favorite trilogies ever.
Premises are that Gabe's family has been into a supernatural accident that killed his father and left his mother in a very dark place and condition. She doesn't speak, she doesn't really react to anything that happens around her until a bird doesn't knock on her window, one day - the D-Day.
Window belonging to Carver's house, where Gabriel has been living with her and some other lads that can do special things since when Noah, a local priest, saved him and his mother from what was supposed to be their fate - not a happy one, believe me - one snowy and scary night, ages before.
The only problem is that Gabe is a curious human being and wants to know what really has happened on that dreadful night, so he starts doing his researches behind everyone's backs, meeting odd people and creatures; some good, other pretty cruel.
So, everyone is happy and gay, and also busy researching this evil power that appears to be gone, but that is still trying to finish what was left undone that dreadful night.
And it's when vampires appear and offer Gabe a dash of light in all that mysterious darkness that things get difficult and the whole mess blows up so that our story can actually start.
I have to admit that at the beginning I hated pretty much everything and everyone, because I still wasn't over the fact that there were no fallen angels, but then I got into the story. Beverley (the author that you can find here and on her personal website) has this marvelous writing style that keeps the reader engaged from the beginning to the end. She knows how to leave clues and how to stop a story line in order to start a new one, but without making you feel like one story is more or less important than the other. She kind of makes you feel greedy, I shall admit.
She's never boring, there hasn't been a single line I skipped or that I felt I wasn't interested in. I needed to know e v e r y t h i n g and immediately, because that story was going too fast and I felt like I didn't have enough time to gather all the information and feel all the emotions I was supposed to feel.
It turned out to have a good pace, tho; it was just me being greedy and engaging so much I couldn't put it down. Again, I can't not praise Beverley's skills when it comes to the writing style; even tho there's a lot going on in every book of the trilogy, she knows how to give the right amount of attention and importance to every single event in her story.
One thing that I loved in particular and that at the beginning I thought I was going to hate was the ability with which she mixed together Witchcraft, supernatural elements and Folklore.
Somehow in my mind something like that can't possibly work out - couldn't, because I have been proven wrong and I have changed my mind after reading these books - so I wasn't ready to get into it and then face another disappointment, but she managed to make the trick work once again.
I am glad to say that she found THE formula to put in the same cauldron both Witches and Vampires without making these two elements feel like they've been forced in an environment that doesn't belong to either of them. They blended together rather than fight in order to have one that prevailed on the other.
I loved the way she talked about Witchcraft (if you know me a little, you also know how demanding I am when it comes to this kind of elements) and the whole system she gave birth to. I honestly was and still am speechless, because she made something pretty folkloric feel like it was realistic and that could potentially happen in someone's life one day or the other.
Also, honorable mention: it was the kind of old magic I would die for. We talk about curses and witches and wars between good and evil. We talk about immortality and rest found only after a revenge. It's about spells and charms and rebirth, but also possession.
And vampires, guys. The vampires. Oh, my, god. Forget about Edward Cullen and Damon Salvatore (soz bae, you've been replaced). These ones will steal your heart in a blink of an eye.
There's so much going on in each and every one of them that you can't even imagine. Beverley portraits them with features belonging to the classical vampire you'll meet in the very first books ever written about these creatures: fangs, blood thirsty, strong and with all the five senses that are more developed than usual. They live at night and sleep their dead sleep during the day. Sensible to the light and able to read minds, communicate through them, but.
Beverley doesn't like to play easy, because her characters, doesn't matter which category they belong to, are many-sided. There's a lot of different aspects belonging to every single one and a lot going on in their lives, past and present, that they look more human than the actual human beings.
One thing you can't avoid is definitely falling in love with at least one of them. When it came to me, I fell for all of them regardless, but I still have my number one, that is the one and only.
I will keep on saying it until I have the chance to do this: I found myself in one character in particular. I disliked him at the very beginning but then I got to know him more in depth and I understood how similar we were. I can't deny he scared me, because he was living and perceiving everything the same way as I've been doing, so finding on paper all my feelings and thoughts and fears kind of hurt.
But another praise for Beverley goes to her ability when it comes to character development. Every single one of them grows up and changes, it doesn't matter if they're main characters or side ones. So does my bae, so does the reader alongside them, so my experience felt a little disorientating at the beginning but became a lot more safe and smooth the more I got to know this character specifically. I somehow grew up with him, understood things about me and found courage and strength where I never thought I could or would, so it has been interesting and what I needed at that specific stage of my life. Needless to say that it motioned something I am working on with all myself, right now, and even tho it's scary, if he managed to find his way out and be happy and safe, why can't I?
As I said, characters are really well developed and none of them is flat or stereotyped. They're not the kind of characters that you can take for granted, because they'll always find a way to surprise you, leave you speechless and heartbroken, sometimes. But once again, for good and for worse you will love them regardless.
What I really appreciate - of these characters but of the novel in general - is the way they make you think about everyday life and topics we consider matter of facts. We don't really think about Religion, i.e., which is an important topic she explores throughout the three novels, because it's part of our lives since when we are born whether we like it or not. We don't really get to choose until late and we spend most of our lives wandering and looking into other people's perspectives in order to find our answers, whilst Beverley gives us characters that doubts instead of trying and give said answers. She makes us readers think and choose and pick a side and I find it admirable.
She has the guts, let me tell you. She's not afraid of words and of speaking what comes to her mind or her characters' ones.
Also, this saga really makes you think about love, friendship and family; how relationships develops, how they deteriorate, how they get stronger and how hard is to keep on believing in someone when the whole world somehow seems to know it's the wrong thing to do. It teaches the reader that sometimes in order to do something good, something bad has to happen, but also that the bad can always be fixed. That there's a time for everything, a solution to every problem, that trust is a big thing that can't be underestimated or taken for granted. It teaches the value of sacrifice and explains pretty clearly that you can't have something without working hard in order to obtain it. And above all, Equivalent Exchange permeates the whole story line and yeah, if you're not sold yet and if you didn't go and buy the three books already, please feel free to tell me what else you need to know.
