The Miracle Girl Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 822 ratings

To secure a loving future, she must shed an addicting past.

Newspaper publisher and world traveler JJ Cavendish continually feels pressured to live up to her Miracle Girl nickname. Not many people know she’s living a carefully crafted lie. She may not hide ties to the LGBT community, but she does hide past struggles with addiction.

When the Colorado native is handpicked to take the helm at a dying Denver newspaper, she ends up reconnecting with her long lost love in this contemporary lesbian romance. Only there’s a catch. If JJ fires the most belligerent editor at the paper, she risks losing the love of her life.

Mid-afternoon office romps abound in this romantic comedy while also focusing on what it takes for a newspaper to remain relevant in this age of social media.

Must JJ lose everything in order to gain a life more fully her own?

There is a lot more to this book than it seems at first glance - a lot more to the moniker of Miracle Girl than one assumes. JJ hasn't had life easy, and the prologue is heart wrenching on its own.

But this really is the story of what happens 20 years later, of getting that second chance, and how JJ deals with her task of trying to save the newspaper along with the rekindling of her relationship with Claire. Of course, nothing is straightforward.

I found it to be an enjoyable read. JJ has been through a lot, and goes through a lot, but even then there is character growth, and seeing the relationship develop is always worth it. There is plenty of angst, and the pacing is fast, but the story works well as a whole, and wraps up nicely.

I’m giving this book five stars because the author knows how to keep the reader enthralled. This story was great and I have a feeling after reading some books by her that there is a common theme besides the obvious one. Addiction is a powerful force that grips all of us and it can come in so many different forms. Anyway, I thought about marking this four stars because the great reveal wasn’t climactic enough and I felt she rushed the ending. Whether that was to meet a deadline or she had another story formulating in her mind, it was greatly disappointing that the reveal was left up to the reader to paint for themselves. She deserves five stars and the markdown but I love this author’s body of work to not give her a four.

Got this for the story on JJ as I was reading the Lost series; so some of those blanks are filling in. Plan to read The Fall Girl for the rest. I was so used to the humor prevalent in other books that this one caught me a bit by surprise with the different tone, but the characters were good, the story solid, and the sex scenes very nicely done. Broached addiction and related impact well. Seemed to wrap up rather quickly, but maybe some loose ends will reconcile in next book. Definitely recommend. Would have liked to have seen more of the mysterious assistant explored in this but maybe there can be some future spinoff...?

I've enjoyed all of this author's other books, so when I settled down with this one, I fully expected more of the same. You know, great writing, great characters, and a universal theme that would have me feeling for and pulling for the protagonist. I figured, like her other books, it might make me angry, or make me laugh, or maybe even make me shed a tear or two. But I didn't expect it to make me... swallow my false teeth. Just kidding. I don't actually wear falsies, but if I did, I might have swallowed 'em. As it was, it just made me... blush.

You see, the writing and characters are as good as ever, but some of the "actions" within the story transported me outside of my old broad comfort zone, and smack dab into the land of Erotica. Okay, now don't get me wrong. I realize many many other people consider Erotica to be a very desirable destination, so they thoroughly enjoy books that take them to the land of licking, sucking, and sticking, but me? I was looking for a destination a little less... um... shall we say... exciting? Something more along the lines of Topeka...

Oh hush. No offense to Topeka. That's the first name that popped into my head. (I've never even BEEN to Topeka... I'm sure it's quite lovely.)

Bottom line, if you enjoy erotica, and aren't offended by coarse language, you will LOVE this book. Like I said, the writing is still terrific, and so are the characters. The story line is a little bit more light-hearted than T.B.'s earlier books, so there's a bit more humor, too. And ya know. That other stuff. That toe-curling stuff.

So buy it! Read it! Enjoy it! Just don't expect to end up in Topeka, because... "This isn't Kansas anymore, Toto!"

    Good series!
On the fence with this story --: but i did a reread and i finally understand all the 'why's' on the substance and depth of this storyline. Readers got to endure some of JJ's past pain and struggles because of all the little bits and piece of background sentences that the author mention while she (JJ) was thinking of her life back then. Good chemistry and storytelling at times -- just did not like the push pull and indecisiveness between them.

This book is not the typical young people exploring their sexuality and fearful of coming out. This is a mature story of two women finding each other again after 25 years. Their journeys have been so completely different, but their love has never changed for one another. TB's wonderful writing style includes multidimensional characters who are intriguing, complex and very human. There's loss, struggles, obstacles and redemption. The emotions and intensity are hot!!! There's something for everyone in this book.

I cannot wait to read the next book in her series, The Fall Girl. There is so much more to JJ and Claire's story. Again, TB, has me hooked!

As with all of Ms. Markinson's books, I truly enjoyed this one. I generally give her books 4 stars because they are really enjoyable, but this one I thought deserved 5. You can tell how Miss Markinson's writing has really tightened up with each successive book, and I found the dialogue to be more realistic, and the characters to be even more well-rounded than in previous books.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story line, and I found the subject matter to be handled in a very realistic way. I don't want to include any spoilers, but I have experience with much of what happens to The Miracle Girl with family members, and I thought the writing was spot on. Very well done!

I think I’m fast becoming polyamorous..... JJ yes and Claire of course but Cora is also a winner for me. So good, she deserves more than a medal.
I couldn’t leave this story for five minutes; I was so “in it” that it almost hurt at times.
I love your work, TBM.... Thank you for another great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly a cozy romance
Reviewed in France on August 21, 2020
Miracle Girl isn’t a cosy romance and I am starting to doubt, whether it is actually possible to write one with the setting being the corporate world. It is not a bad book, mind you, but there is much pain, that is all too close to the real world to feel comfortable with.

TB’s writing is excellent, the characters are well defined and the story is almost too real, yet not even the love scenes can help over the sad life choices of the lead character due to her insecurity. Nothing unusual, especially if you’re young and strive to succeed in a cut-throat corporate business.

Of course it doesn’t help, that I had to watch people I liked break over the same issues as JJ and in the same fashion, only forty years ago now and in the music industry. So, even though it is a really good book, I was not able to enjoy it. But that should not keep you from reading it, but be prepared to shed some tears over JJ’s story.

    T. B. Markinson's writing talent is incredible. While I prefer high impact action stories, her romance novels draw me forward into the plot. This is the second TB Markinson novel I've read and they are both intense character driven stories. Regardless of your sexual orientation, reader's will be swept away with the author's attention to detail of each of the characters' personality traits, both the light and the dark. Victims of their past, some are haunted and crushed by regrets. The reader is drawn into their struggle, their search for a future too impossible to hope for.The Miracle Girl
