The Moth and the Flame (When Rivals Play Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,089 ratings

The Blackwood Keep crew are back in this second installment!

THE FLAME

Here lies Louchana Valentine. She was a homeless, orphaned virgin.

I never cared what my gravestone would say until I landed in deep with a powerful gangster. Lucky for me, my best friend happens to be ruthless too. I should feel guilty that he's forced to turn on the man who's been a father to him. Except I've always known that Wren's soul wasn't as black as he claimed.

He was good.
He was beautiful.
He was mine.
He just didn't know it yet.

And with Wren keeping me safe, I've got time left to rewrite the end of my story. But if he has his way, virgin is already carved in stone.

THE MOTH

I've never known anyone as alluring as Lou. Or as frustrating. Since the night she saved my life and stole my wallet for her troubles, I couldn't stay away.

She became my onus.
My light.
My...anyway.

With nowhere to run, I'm forced to trust someone I never expected. At least with Lou safe in Blackwood Keep—far away from me—I'll die with my conscience intact. Because she no longer looks at me with friendship in her eyes. Those iridescent blues shine with a different need entirely, and I've never been able to deny her.

The Moth and the Flame is a continuation of the events that occurred in The Peer and the Puppet. Content suitable for ages 18+.

Great addition to the series!
I feel like I've been waiting forever for this book and I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was to finally be able to read this book! There is something about this series that I just love so much. The characters mean so much to me and getting to know Wren and Lou in this book, I love them now just as much as the characters from book one. I will say that I feel like I went into this book expecting one thing and kind of got another and at first I was a little disappointed by that and confused but I definitely understand why the book is written the way it is. I'm a sucker for best friends to lovers romance and this book was a winner for sure. I love that this was kind of a slow burn filled with so much tension I was about to scream if they didn't just get together at one point. But it was the perfect push and pull and I love them all the more for it. I would say this book is more character driven than plot driven (though the plot certainly plays a bigger part in the second half) which I loved since I don't really care much about plot. I love that we got the friendship scenes, the romance scenes and just getting to see the character development of not only the main characters but continuing to see the rest of the gang as well. I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait for the next two books. I NEED Tyra and Vaughn's book asap and I'm missing Wren and Lou already (even though I just finished this book like twenty minutes ago). If you were a fan of the first book I think you'll really enjoy this one and if you haven't read this series before, I would recommend starting with book one since these books are awesome and you don't want to miss out on anything!

If I could give this story more than 5 Stars I would, this story gives you everything you didn't know you wanted. Bebe takes ahold of you from the first page and brings you on a phenomenal journey where the anticipation builds consistently page after page. You wait on baited breathe as you're reading wondering if this is the moment they give in or is it this moment, until you are literally on the edge of your seat white knuckled and restless. The way Bebe constructs the story line is masterfully done. She straight killed the Friends to Lovers game.

"I was lost inside a black void, and she was the flame lighting the way."

Wren and Lou were perfection. The possessiveness they had for each other was so intense and powerful. You could feel their emotions for each other consuming the pages of the story. Their connection was one that doesn't happen often and is so deep you'd have to sever their souls to release them from it. I fell in love with them as individuals but even more so as the couple they became. The sexual tension between them was constant, like a fire all it takes is one spark from that flame to rage into an inferno. And when it finally does it's worth the wait. Good Lord it was HOT!! I'm still all tingly.

"Lou was my onus. My light. The very last tether to my soul."

Wren is Alpha to the tenth degree. He's brooding, jealous, possessive, demanding but also caring and selfless, so in other words he's Perfection ***Sigh****. He's this broken soul trying to do the right thing but usually in the wrong way and it tugs at your heartstrings. He wants to be worthy of Lou but ultimately feels like he isn't. So he pushes her away but always comes back because he loves her too much to truly leave. You can feel his desperation and anguish as the story progresses and he's trying so hard to do what he thinks is right but Lou is slowly breaking down his barriers and with it his self-control.

"There was nothing angelic about Wren Harlan. He was too powerful. Too fierce. Too potent."

Lou is a great character she's one of my favorite heroines. Some people probably won't like her because she is at times immature and she is most definitely selfish. But that's why I like her she is only 15 when we meet her. She should be this way she's a teenager it made her so much more authentic and real. She doesn't let Wren get away with literally anything. He pushes and she pushes right back. She's strong but also so very vulnerable and she too is broken. She keeps her self guarded against as many things as she can so she won't get hurt again, the only one she truly lets in is Wren. I enjoyed her shenanigans they made me smile and brought fun to the story. I think her character is the one that matures the most, you watch her become this fierce, loyal women a true force who will do anything for those she loves without fear.

"I was the moth and she was the flame burning only for me."

Bebe has created this incredible world that once you start you don't want to leave. This story ties in with The Peer and The Puppet. I loved the connection's she created and the depth with which she has written them. I loved everything about this story and can't wait for the next in the series. Bebe is a master at her craft, this story will seep into your veins and stay there long after you've finished. The character's will burrow themselves into your marrow and lay claim to your heart and soul.
    Read. This. Story!!!

Ok, I’ve been waiting for this book FOREVER! I wanted to know more about the characters from The Peer and The Puppet. This book is about Wren and Lou, and yes, I had to reread TPATP before starting this one so I knew who Wren and Lou were.

There are twists and turns that I did not see coming. The story unravels secrets and so much tension between the families and the adults that I seriously need the next one! I have SO MANY QUESTIONS! I was so happy to see more of the gang, see Four and Ever from someone else’s perspective. Even if they all appeared in the last third of the book.

Honestly, I’m giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 because I felt that Wren and Lou’s push and pull was driving me nuts. It was dragging and frustrated me to no end. I understand the slow burn but I felt that they were going in circles and they were in the same position over and over again. There wasn’t much action in the first half of the book but the last third made up for it.

I totally recommend this series but have to say that the first book is my favorite. FOUREVER always!

    ***5 Stars***

After finishing The Peer & The Puppet (like right after finishing it) I will admit to a bit of...hesitation over who the MC’s of The Moth & The Flame were going to be (at least according to what I put in my review of TPATP ~ so I can’t deny it) but I was also excited to get my hands on it because of the setup that was already in play and I am now kicking my own booty for even being slightly disappointed over Wren and Lou being the MC’s because I LOVED every second of their story...Ok. Maybe not loved, because there were those frustrating, I really want to ring your neck, moments, but overall, I was hooked and had a very difficult time putting the book down!

Lou. This girl. I adored her. I did. She is fearless and has no problem going after what she wants. Now, there are times where the method she uses aren’t always the best, but she lays it all out there and doesn’t apologize for it. Wren. This man, and he is a man regardless of how many years he’s lived on this earth, is kind of everything. His exterior may show him as cold and indifferent, but underneath is a man who has a good soul and a heart that will do anything for those he calls his own.

As for their besties to lovers journey. The push/pull was real in this one, but even with all the frustration these two put me through, it was definitely an enjoyable one. I loved how Wren did his best to not cross the lines he’d drawn in the sand as much as Lou’s antics at getting those lines erased. What made all of the crazy that is their relationship work for me was that underneath it all ~ and there is a lot underneath it all ~ was that they were friends, good ones, who truly cared about each other. Now, things do come to a head...a few times...and I’ll be honest and say I was more #TeamWren than #TeamLou, but, in the end, I love how things worked out for them.

TMATF was a great read, and just like with TPATP you do have to blur lines and accept the world that they all live in, but with that said, I do enjoy being dropped into this world and getting lost in it for a few hours. As for issues/triggers ~ I thought they were all handled well, especially the age thing. Then there are the twists and turns that happened in this one, I gotta say, I didn’t see those coming, but they definitely made sense and made the connection between the two books that much stronger for me. And of course, there are the supporting cast of characters, It was fun hanging out with Four, Ever, Vaughn, Tyra and Jamie and seeing what crazy they were getting themselves into, and though Vaughn and Tyra are the ones whose relationship I’m really interested in, I can’t say that I’m not excited to see all the chaos Jamie and Barbie will bring in the next book!

LOU AND WREN ARE PERFECTION. I LOVED these characters and I will never ever get over this book or them. B.B. Oh damn people, this is a must read!
The moth and the flame is the 2nd book in the series and it's definitely as good as the first one 🤩
It's about two teenagers that were dealt a hard life but found comfort in each other... and some gang stuff 😁
So much love and so much angst😍

But not only the story got me all hot and bothered - the characters were so hot 🔥
Wren comes off as hard and kinda strict to his best friend. But BB has a real talent writing her male heroes with just enough hard shell and a lot more soft, sweet, emotional inside 🥺❤️
Lou was also kinda closed off... But I really felt her pain and understood her so much.
And I just gotta say that I love her and Fours friendship - got me even more excited about Evermore 💯
I gotta say, that I really fell in love with Wren and Lou!

The moth and the flame ❤️

This book was my most anticipated read for 2019, BB Reid did not disappoint.

If you like coming to age, friends to lovers, characters with pasts, angst, twists and turns, plot twists after plot twist, secrets and lies being revealed then this book is for you.

We first meet Wren in the peer and the puppet. Wren’s story continues from that storyline. Wren sort of reminded me of Ever. I certainly didn’t see wren as the guy who is pictured on the cover. Wren and Ever are so similar which made me fall in love with wren so fast.

With this being said, if you haven’t read the peer and the puppet and you were thinking of starting the moth and the flame, then I would recommend you start with the first book as that book sets the storyline for this series.

Wren and Lou meet under such unconventional circumstances and their first meeting couldn’t have gone any better in my eyes. When these two meet they begin a friendship and soon become inseparable. The chemistry, the connection they have started to build as friends is crazy. I wish I had that.

I love how bb takes us on the journey of learning how they meet, what has occurred in their life to shape them into the people they are today.

When these two finally get together it’s explosive, it will make you gasp for air. The sexual chemistry is dialed up to 180. The build up is there and as the pages and chapters go by, you see the dramatically change and your just waiting for it to happen.

I guarantee you will fall for wren and Lou and will love their story just as much as I did.

Of course we see Ever, Four, Vaughn, Tyra, Jamie, Barbie and many more characters. I missed these characters so much and was glad to see them in this book. With that being said if I don’t get Jamie’s book next, I am going to lock myself in my room and cry clutching a bottle of vodka to drown my sorrows in.

When I first read the blurb and realised it was Lou and Wren, the two characters who were briefly mentioned in book one, I couldn't see how they fit into the storyline in such a significant way. I thought the story would venture off into a different tale of events and leave so many unanswered questions remaining from book one. However, I was very surprised.

Are there still unanswered questions? The answer is yes. But so many of the questions are answered from book one, the storyline just carries on progressing with a different couple interlinking their love story with the greater picture. Hence leaving so many more questions unanswered but allowing other questions to make sense that was revealed from book one.

Lou and Wren have a rollercoaster of a friends-to-lovers relationship with Lou being all feisty and ready for a fight while she has Wren who is guarded and takes no bs, wrapped around her little finger. Their journey starts from the day they bumped into each other in a snowstorm and nearly died all the way up to their HEA two/three years later. It's nice to see the story from the other side of the tracks compared to Ever and Four in the big house, compared to Lou and Wren having to make ends meet and living life rough. I loved how all the characters from book one are still so relevant in the storyline and the grand reveal that is no doubt going to make my head explode.
