The One I Hate: An enemies to lovers, accidental pregnancy, romance (Rolling Hills Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 652 ratings

I hate Simon Banks.
I also hate tequila.
The first makes my blood boil with his devilish smirk and giant…ego.
The second makes me do questionable things.
Specifically, with Simon.
Fine. Whatever. It’s a blip on my radar.
Even though I can’t stop thinking about memories of our night…or his hands…and that mouth.
But I have more important things to do—like finally opening my dream restaurant in the small town of Rolling Hills.
There’s just one problem—he lives here.
I’m bound and determined to not let that stop me.
He’s bound and committed to get under my skin.
And here’s another thing I hate—it’s working.
His smug smile. His clever jokes. The way my body heats when he’s around.
Our looks of longing and the sizzling tension between us.
Not to mention his bare, chiseled chest running past my restaurant every day.
He’s becoming too hard to resist.
I’m starting to realize there’s a thin line between love and hate.
Ours just happens to be two pink ones…

The One I Hate is Book 4 in the Rolling Hills series. It can be read as a complete standalone. It features:

  • Enemies to Lovers
  • Accidental pregnancy
  • Small town
  • Found family
  • He falls first
  • Opposites attract
  • Close proximity
  • Boy obsessed
  • Low angst
  • No third-act breakup

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Known for her witty sense of humor, Chelle Sloan is a former sports editor who after completing her Master’s degree in journalism, decided to become a romance author. You know, because that’s the normal path to writing happily ever afters.

An Ohio native, she’s fiercely loyal to Cleveland sports, is the owner of way too many — yet not enough — tumblers and will be a New Kids on the Block fan until the day she dies. She does her best writing at Panera, or anywhere that’s not her house.

When she’s not writing, she’s trying to learn to bake, fixing up her condo (badly and by watching YouTube videos), or falling in love with a book.

As for her own happily every after? Maybe one day...

I wasn’t expecting to like this book as much as I did, but it was a pleasant surprise. My main hold up was Simon. He came across as a bit of a man-child in the first three books, which he definitely was, but it turned out to be an endearing quality for his character. He was rich and cocky, but he was so much more than that. He worked hard for his money and used it to make his community better. He loved hard and while he was a lot, he ended up being one of my favorite mmc’s from this series.

Charlie was the one that got away for Simon. She was the girl who altered the way he approached girls and she was the one who settled him down when she came back into his life. She was a strong character who didn’t let Simon get away with anything but knew how to own up to her own mistakes. She’d been through a lot in their years apart and that changed the way she looked at life. She was the perfect match for Simon.

I just loved Simon. I loved his pestering questions. I loved his golden retriever energy. And I loved his vulnerability. He knew how to apologize and didn’t have any problems admitting when he had done wrong. I loved his reaction to learning he was going to be a dad. He was all in from the beginning with Charlie, even if he didn’t really know it.

This was the perfect way to end this series. I loved the acknowledgment of the wedding that changed all four friends’ lives. I loved the way we got to see them all five years later in the bonus epilogue. This series was so fun and filled with so many characters I’m hoping to see again!

    - Enemies to lovers
    - Second chance
    - Miscommunication
    - Unplanned pregnancy
    - Small town romance

I absolutely adore everything that Chelle writes. Her witty dialogue and quirky, but compelling, characters make all of her stories the next level of brilliance. After reading the other books in the Rolling Hills series, I have been waiting for Simon's story. He is the quintessential class clown, but he has a heart bigger than his ego.

While in college, Simon meets and becomes absolutely smitten with the barista with the ladybug headband. He coins the nickname "Bug" since she won't tell him her name. Charlie can't believe the popular and handsome Simon would want anything to do with her unless it's some sort of prank. So she guards her heart until that one evening up on the rooftop.... Then she disappears.

Years later, Simon sees Charlie at his friend's wedding and becomes determined to find out why she ran away after THAT KISS, because, frankly, it changed his life. Charlie is still angry at Simon for circumstances he doesn't remember, and they are at an impasse...until Charlie moves to Rolling Hills. Now Simon launches Project Answer to find out the truth. But he gets a surprise instead...

This friend group and their texts made this book so special. I howled with laughter and stomped my feet many times throughout the book. An absolute gem of a story and one I'll be re-reading!

**Spoilers** The One I Hate calls flate compared to the earlier novels in this series. While Chelle Sloan writes Simon just as charming as ever, Charlie comes across as annoying. Her constant need to run away and believe the worst out of Simon drags the narrative of the novel down. Her past trauma of a bad dad can only account for so much running away. How can Simon ever trust that she's going to stick around and not run off after one simple argument taking Lainey with her? Yes he made a mistake not disclosing his owning Mona's to her, but it was never malicious and she left for a week without ever responding to him. She literally hid in a kitchen and had her staff lie to his face. That's toxic. Simon was the only thing holding this book together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simon says, pick me Charlie, Love Me!

The One I Hate is such a wonderful story! Chelle Sloan has outdone herself and created such a beautifully imperfect love for Simon and Charlie.

Simon Banks is a hoot and a half! His stream of consciousness talk is a tidal boar of sweet selfishness that had me snorghing and highlighting with glee. He’s the most unfiltered, yet sweet man, who is only somewhat aware of the impact of his words. And yet, he is a lovely man who will do ANYTHING to win the woman… I’ve never seen a man with such Labrador Retriever energy. So kind and sometimes bowling people over with his good intentions and love. Simon is officially now my 20th GOATBB, from the thousand or so books I’ve read over the past few years.

Charlie is the female version of the marshmallow wrapped in barb wire. She’s a second degree black belt in the martial art of of bolting. So much insecurity, but we face our hurts when the divine time is right. And thankfully her found family of friends is able to make her see just how special their love is!

These two together are the perfect balance of sweet and salty and together they’re just so much fun, I want to live in Rolling Hills so I can see what they get up to!

(Oh, but the cover model is the most un-Simon choice I could ever have envisioned. He should be in a much better fitting shirt and be so much prettier and mischievous!)

I was looking forward to Simon's story and he didn't disappoint. He has been such a fun character in his friend's books and seeing him fall so hard for Charlie was great. I liked the way Charlie could hold her own with Simon and challenge him, and I liked the way he brought the fun and joy to their relationship. If I have to have any criticism, it would be that it took them so long to get past what had happened 15 years before, but that is simply because I was so impatient for them to get together!
It is always good to get glimpses of the other couples from previous books and I really like the way all their stories fit together. This has been a great series and I look forward to whatever comes next.

“Welcome all. Except for Simon Banks. You know what you did.”

How have I been sleeping on this series? Yes I jumped in at book 4. Will I be going back immediately to binge 1-3, also yes.

“ You’re really pretty, and I want to kiss you and cuddle you and, if you’d let me, touch your butt.”

When we catch up with Simon he is at his best friends wedding when he recognizes one of the chefs. He hasn’t seen Charlie in over 15 years after she disappeared without a trace and he wants answers and won’t stop until he gets them.

“What can I say? I am who I am.”

When Charlie’s dream are right outside her grasp, she has no choice but to reach out and snag it. Even if it means moving to a town where she will be harassed on a daily by Simon. She thinks she can handle it but after their one night stand a couple months ago, it’s hard to see past the blurry lines.

“ I’ve fed him once. I know he’s just going to keep coming back.”

I found myself resonating a lot with Charlie and how she views herself and the struggles that she endures. I love when she let her inner strength out and how she had no problems putting Simon in his place when it was needed.

“Eyes on me, Bug. And don’t you dare look away.”

I honestly couldn’t book this book down. Simon is so unapologetically himself which I adored and seeing the friendships with the guys and how they drop everything for each other had me swooning. This is a sweet story that features finding the right person at the wrong time but when they get their moment, it’s simply everything. Not a spoiler, but when the pregnancy comes on page, I had happy tears from his reaction.

“ Your family isn’t just by blood. Or marriage. It’s the people who love you. “

I loved this book so much and next up is the Bank Sisters!
