Sophia Weber is an anxious twenty-two-year-old, utterly dependent on her mother’s care. Gertrude Weber, Sophia’s mother, spends her time whipping her matriarchal household into shape while obsessing over her daughter’s wellbeing. But Gertrude uses her maternal power only to manipulate her daughter into living a life of fear and dependency. The novel takes readers on a tormenting ride through Sophia’s memories while she struggles in the present day with a mother who has not yet allowed her child to grow up.While still living at home, Sophia commutes by bus to her job—where pushing paper is her forte. Pushing paper around for a living allows Sophia to hide behind mountains of busywork, rather than repairing her draining home-life. But when she meets a coworker, Damian Voigt, who fills her head with dreams of running away from home and leaving her present demons behind, the story takes a dramatic turn. Sophia thereby attempts to defy her dependency by falling for Damian. Filled with urgency, emotional turmoil, and psychological depth, The Paper Pusher gives its readers an inside look at a world of hope amongst a backdrop of constant struggle. It shows Sophia’s fight to overcome codependency caused by her parent’s systematic manipulation and her lover’s unexpected choice. Will Damian merely step in as a placeholder for Sophia’s mother? Is their relationship solving the problem, or is this a new form of codependence?

    Format: Kindle
The Paper Pusher by Kaitlyn Lansing is an odd, rambling, disjointed mess of a book. It skips between time and place not only within chapters but also within paragraphs. It also slips between reality and fantasy and between thoughts and actions. All of this makes for a confusing, difficult to read story.

The characters are interesting, if not incredibly damaged, yet we only find the cause of such damage in the daughter, but not her mother or her lover. It would be interesting for me to know why the mother turned out as she did. The one glimpse of her childhood showed her to be unreasonably jealous and cruel at a young age for no reason other than that was the way she inherently was. The lover, on the other hand, is just a mystery.

Further, it’s clear Ms. Lansing can write well. Many of the chapters or at least several paragraphs within them are compelling and extremely interesting. Also, I loved another one of her books, A Man of Action; I gave that book five stars. This book, however, is just too sloppily put together as to not be coherent. For that I blame the book’s editors.

I received this book as an advanced readers copy, and I am providing my review VOLUNTARILY.

This a beautifully written book with poetic prose. At the beginning the horrible dynamic of Sophia's family was morbidly compelling. I fervently rooted for Sophia to escape.

Yet Sophia's eventual immersion into a romantic relationship where she is once again subjugated is extremely disappointing .

There are some minor continuity issues as well, which suggests the need for further editing.

I received a free ARC. I am leaving my honest review.
