The Party: a gripping psychological thriller Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 1,714 ratings

This will be a party to remember. For all the wrong reasons.

Ruth loves her life in London – she has a high-powered career and a handsome and successful fiancé. This Christmas she’s bringing him back to her home town to meet her family and school friends, one of whom, Holly Murphy, has a new baby.

But, as the Christmas Eve party is in full swing, the unthinkable happens – Ruth drops the baby, injuring the little boy.

Or did she?

Ruth becomes convinced she didn’t cause the baby’s injuries, that they were inflicted before the party, that the Murphys are not the lovely family they appear to be.

Determined to discover what really happened to the child, Ruth digs for the truth. And won’t stop even when she’s shunned by her old friends, alienated from her fiancé, and sacked from her dream job.

But are her suspicions justified? Or is she in the grip of a deadly obsession that threatens to utterly destroy her perfect life?

The Party – the gripping psychological thriller perfect for fans of Mark Edwards, K.L. Slater and Miranda Rijks.

The Party is a story of friends whom grew up together and reunite on Christmas Eve every year since going off in different directions after reaching adulthood.

Ruth is the only one whom has moved out of town to London. She visits her parents over the holiday and always attends the Christmas Eve party. This year is no different. Her good friend recently gave birth to a baby boy, Dylan.
While Ruth is holding Dylan, she inadvertently loses her hold and drops him. He mostly rolls down her leg but nonetheless, every one is shocked and he, of course, cries out. In reviewing if he is hurt in any way, some bruising is noted. Everyone turns on Ruth.

The storyline spins off to the possibilities of how this happened. Ruth finds it unbelievable that she caused this damage. Ruth takes tremendous strides in investigating who really caused the bruises. She goes to such extremes, she jeopardizes every relationship. Her parents, her fiancée, her friendships, her job, the police department are all increasingly convinced she is obsessed and question her sanity.

In situations like this, you quickly learn whom your allies are. Bonds, you think are forever, truly show up here. Plenty of her escapades imply her guilt that she does not accept. It's a crazy read with multiple twists and turn that leave you scratching your head.

As secrets unfold and the truth is revealed, the safety of Dylan is restored and the truth behind friendships is bittersweet.

THE PARTY by Nora Valters was a refreshing storyline. It had plenty of twists and turns and had me scratching my head every time my suspect was cleared.
Ruth returns to her hometown to introduce her fiancé to her friends and family. While at a party on Christmas Eve she unbelievably drops her friend Holly’s baby. The baby, Dylan, suffers bruising but Holly and her husband assure her that the baby is just fine and refuse to go to the hospital. But wait…those bruises look too old to have just happened? As Ruth begins to wonder, then investigate what’s really going on, her life begins to unravel.
I enjoyed this one. It had me turning the pages quickly as Ruth fell further and further down the rabbit hole. While most of her investigative skills were actually crimes themselves, I liked how Ms. Valters painted concise pictures of how and why Ruth was breaking the law. I was invested in Ruth as she tried to help baby Dylan. She began the story as a villain but I cheered with her as she figured it all out although I cringed every time she confronted her suspects. We were both wrong on a few.
    Well done, Ms Valters!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review which I am leaving voluntarily.

If anyone wants a great book that keeps you not wanting to put down, this is it!! There are twists and turns that have you trying to figure out who's the good person and who is the one causing everything that's going on. About the time you think you know, oops, wrong. I recommend this for a reader who thinks they always figure it out before the last chapter. Happy reading 📚

I don't think that I have read a book by this author but will read some of her other books. This was just a little out there. It does prove how quickly friends can turn against you when one little thing goes wrong. Alright maybe what Ruth did to Dylan could be questionable but was it worth losing her fiance and friends?

The book introduced at least 20 characters in the first chapter alone, which required me to use my Notes app to keep track of them. Only about right of these characters continued to be relevant. The action mainly revolves around the main character, Ruth, who is spiraling out of control. I anticipated a significant twist early on, but there were still some surprising developments towards the end.

Grabbed me from the beginning. I honestly knew that it was more than it appears in the Christmas party. Most of the characters I would definitely kick to the curb, however the main character perseveres in order to get to the bottom of this horrible situation. It brought many emotions and not all of them were good. Very well done.

Implausible but still satisfying story about a woman who trusts her gut even though it costs her everything, including her freedom. Redemption and too neat a bow come at the end, but I’m willing to give the author another try with another read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 23, 2023
From start to finish, I found this book impossible to put down. I really didn't guess the twist of 'the villain ' of this story. I did wonder why the main character didn't just contact social services.? So maybe not the most believable plot. The author definitely used a lot of poetic license with child protection law. A wife accuses her husband of attacking her and her baby. Causing the baby significant bruising and the police just believe the wife and no further investigation is taken into the child's safety and well.being. Thankfully in real life an infant's safety is taken a lot more seriously. But as a enjoyable work of fiction this story really works.. I recommend this book and I am just starting another book by the same author.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit far fetched but good read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 9, 2023
I didn't really connect with the main character, but the book was well written and flowed well in one timeline, which I personally prefer to then and now storylines
Tough subjects to cover I this book, child abuse and domestic violence etc so trigger warnings for those who can't read about such things.
    Spoilers

Personally I would change a couple of things myself, the main thing being that I would not call the baby that was taken from beside its mum James, as I find this makes me associate him with poor James Bulger and so I struggled with that myself. I support his charity and have read his mum's book I let him go, and so perhaps I'm too sensitive on this bit.

This book gripped me from the first chapter. I only hold friend's babies when I'm sitting down as I'm so scared of dropping them so I definitely identified with the plotline. I couldn't wait to pick the book back up again each night and got through it in three sittings. Also loved the twist at the end!
