"Lisa Renee Jones wrote exactly what I was looking for. An amazing thriller that pulled me in, kept me reading, and turning pages. The Poet is one of the best thrillers I have read in a very long time." -A Soccer Mom's Book Blog
"Dark and gritty, this thriller has secrets, not just about the killer, but of those around Jazz, that she learns as she probes deeper into who the killer is and stop him before he kills and draws an "U" on his next "undeserving' victim." -Pamela K., Goodreads
"A word of warning: Don't finish this book at bedtime because it will be hard to fall asleep!" -Linda J., Goodreads
"A clever and frightening thriller. I couldn't put this one down. This is a series to follow and I am looking forward to the next one!" -Just Book Talk
"This was exceptionally well-plotted and intriguing, I thought I had it solved but was so very, very wrong. Lisa Renee Jones is quite the storyteller. Her plot and storylines were smooth and full of red herrings and Easter eggs as well as being well-crafted and intricately nuanced. Her characters were complicated, compelling, and an odd assortment of potential suspects." -Books and Bindings Blog

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI say that because once you figure out whodunit and Sam’s predicament, your heart will pound and your legs will want to run for her. I know because this happened to me. This would make a great movie but I couldn’t watch what gave me chills while reading it. 😨 I tried to keep up with the ages because I felt the prologue set the killer on his path. Thrilling, scary, murder mystery for a young detective who is finding her way after the death of her father. There is also the wee facet of her ability to sense evil. Nice touch!
We first meet “the Professor” at a poem reading. He appears to be normal but darkness lurks behind those eyes. Once he sets his sights on the person who “offends” him, we know what happens next. Circumstances cause our H, Detective Samantha Jazz to be called in to the newest case of what appears to be a serial killer whom she dubs The Poet. But it gets worse. Not saying any more about that! This book will have you on pins-and-needles and there will be twists and turns…😱
While the serial killer is doing his deeds, Sam is coming to grips with her precarious position because of her father’s transgressions. Fortunately, she has Wade in her life but does she accept his love and she has Lang by her side but will she accept his help? I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through NetGalley and Entangled. If you like well-written thrillers with intelligent plotting, read this book. You will not be sorry.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great read and well executed on how police work is done to find a serial killer.
I went into this book not sure it would grab my attention, at first. Shortly after I started I could not stop turning the pages. There are many twists and mysteries that do all come together at the end. I enjoyed getting the insight of Detective Jazz's mind while she worked this case. I really enjoyed Detective Lang and Agent Wade's characters throughout the story.
Just when it all seemed to come to a final conclusion of who the killer was it changed directions. If you enjoy a good thriller/suspense read, then this is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAfter I finished The Poet, all I could say after was “Whoa!” I knew that this book by Lisa would not be her normal Romance story, no my friends it is far from it. I loved this story. So much suspense and “WhoDunIt” drama wrapped in one had my head spinning. I loved a good mystery book. I love that I could not uncover the truth until it was revealed. This story kept me on my toes. It took a few days to finish this book, but I would not have it any other way. You cannot rush into this story, it was a bedtime read and I took a few hours at a time.
The Poet has mystery written all over it. The suspense will keep you on the edge and the angst will grip you by your throat! To all my mystery and thriller book friends, The Poet is a must read to end 2020 right! #BookRec2020
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Poet is a phenomenal suspenseful read. You will be on the edge of your seat as Sam works to solve who is the Poet. Sam is strong and she is determined to bring the Poet down. I love the banter between Sam and her partner Lang. You will be guessing the entire time who the Poet is. You will love how Sam doesn't give up and works through the case. I love the chemistry between Sam and Wade. They work so well together as a couple who can lean on each other to talk through the cases. There are a few twists and turns that will keep you engrossed the whole entire time. I could not put this one down. Go one click it today.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2021Format: KindleVerified Purchase3.25-3.5 STARS
More of a crime novel than an edge-of-your-seat thriller, this whodunit centers around a serial killer with an obsession for both poetry and the detective tasked with solving the series of bizarre murders. While the story itself is fairly interesting, the drawn-out mystery felt rushed at the very end, with no real twists or turns along the way. I never warmed up to the characters, either, so I missed that real connection that allows me to fully immerse myself in the story. That said, I found “The Poet” to be a decent mystery, but not the riveting thriller I was hoping it would be.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLisa gets better with each book and although I loved this book I must admit My favorite is still Lilah Love. The Poet kept you guessing with each page. It was a great read and I look forward to reading the second book. Still Lilah is a badass and I Lisa will keep writing about her and Kane. I can't wait for the next book to be released. I would have liked a little more information about Wade and Lane. With her other books she gives more back round and I would have liked to understand more of her relationship with Wade and why she walked away and more about Lane her partner. That was disappointing. Maybe with book 2 we will have a better understanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Poet had me transfixed from the first to last page. A very well-constructed thriller/mystery with a satisfying conclusion. Insight into the killer’s mind with chapters in his POV were brilliant. My only disappointment was the ending. I’m never satisfied when a tricky mystery, that could theoretically span decades, concludes with a few paragraphs of explanation, but perhaps I’m just a fussy reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow, this is one of the best thriller books that I've read. It has a badass woman cop that takes nothing from anyone. She has the tools the killer wants. He wants to groom her to become the best. Her understanding and gut instincts lead her through the crime scenes to come to a conclusion that is right as well as wrong. I love how the book takes you along on the ups and downs of her life as well as the case. I would recommend this book. It's the start of a great series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good nookNot to be missed
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a very absorbing read and I did t want to put it down . It did remind me in parts of the Lilah Love books but that didn’t take anything away from this story. Detective Jazz was a good character and I do hope there will be more to follow

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI started reading this book a few months ago and then stopped as I wasn’t concentrating on it. I picked it up again last week and started it from the beginning and I’m so glad I did. I’ve really enjoyed this book and look forwards to more stories with Samantha Jazz leading investigations. This book sees a number of murders but the murderer is leaving clues so that Sam is involved with the investigation. Definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t start reading this last thing at night!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnce I had started this book, I simply had to finish it in one reading so I ended up having very little sleep that night. I relished the twists and turns and appreciated the deftness of touch in relation to the development of the main characters. A very good piece of writing which has you on the edge of your seat - or sitting bolt upright in bed!
