The Prince's Poisoned Vow (Infernal War Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 464 ratings

Every country is built on revolution.

THE WARDEN. Soren is a nameless, stateless man, tasked with keeping watch over Maricol’s borders. He isn’t meant for politics, only dealing with the dead. His past was buried in the poison fields, but after a fateful encounter with a prince, Soren comes to realize he can’t keep what magic burns inside him hidden forever.

THE PRINCE. Vanya Sa’Liandel was the spare who survived the Houses’ murderous games to become the Imperial crown prince of Solaria. He has a duty to his country, but he’ll owe his life to the wardens. Payment of any kind is costly, especially when he’s at risk of losing his heart to the man who saved his life.

THE COG. Caris Dhemlan hears the siren song of clarion crystals better than anyone in Ashion. That skill for inventing has enriched her bloodline, but it’s who she can become that will ultimately entangle her with the Clockwork Brigade.

THE PRINCESS. Eimarille Rourke should have been raised to be queen of one country; instead, she is prisoner of another. Guided by a star god, Eimarille bides her time in a gilded cage, spinning a political web to gain a throne and start a war the world isn’t ready for.

From the author who brought you the Soulbound series comes a queer steampunk-inspired epic fantasy.

Starfire burns bright with this book!!!
Possible spoilers I had never read Hailey’s books before. I am telling you, the world building is amazing. The plot is enchanting. I love following all the different characters and seeing them develop. I can’t wait for the 3rd installment to come out so I can keep falling bc in love with these characters. The three royals that survived the inferno all have been given different paths, but they all lead to similar places. They all have the gift of Starfire, and use it to protect themselves and the ones they love. Two sisters and a brother are on a journey to the throne, but who will arrive without betraying themselves or their loved ones.

Oooh I love Love LOVE this book! I was a big fan of The Soulbound series Hailey wrote. This book was something I never expected. It was a riveting take of the steampunk zombie genre. I adore all of the characters, and the shifting points of view kept me engaged in a way that so few authors can pull off. The story was enthralling and I honestly cannot wait for the second book!! There is too much going on that I can’t wait to see how it resolves. It is refreshing and different and this book is an amazing start to the new series.

The only thing I semi struggled with, was the time step in the story. Hailey does a decent job of making sure to allude to how long it has been since previous events, but I struggled with some of the bigger jumps where I couldn’t tell if it had been a couple months or a year.

    ******SPOILER*********

My favorite storyline has to be Soren and Vanya! I’m on the edge of myself eat every time they are together and I cannot wait to see how Vanya reacts to Soren’s past.

Emeraillle (pretty sure I spelt that wrong) is a very interesting case. I can’t decide if I love her or hate her. But considering what she did to Nathaniel, she’s definitely in the latter. But overall I enjoyed her quick learning of the political landscape and her trusted blade.

Caris is a close second for storylines I love. Frankly I’m upset at what happened to Nathaniel.

I love how the gods interact in this story. Im also wondering what the gods’ motives are and why some are showing up and helping their scions (Innes) and others only show up in quick spurts (Calisto). Overall though, I love how they interact with the story and the feverent devotion every one has to them (I got chills when Blaine accepted the Star Gods Decree).

Anyways, cheers to Hailey for sharing her wonderful worlds with us! I look forward to reading the next one and re reading this one several times!!!

Not going to lie, this book was very overwhelming for a good chunk of the book. I started out by reading a physical copy of this last summer when it was released, as I had gotten this as an SE in my box subscription. There were so many POVs, difficult vocabulary, and vast world building that my brain went on overload and I had to step away for a bit. This is coming from someone who reads a lot of fantasy and sci-fi and used to the world-building, yet still was a daunting read.

Fast forward a few months and I wanted to try it again after the Audible version was released. Boy was this a game-changer! Gary Furlong is the narrator and is AMAZING!! His voice is mesmerizing and how he manages to voice so many different characters is perfection! Being able to hear the pronunciations (since there isn’t a guide) made understanding easier and having a better grasp on what all is happening, and let me tell you, it is a lot.

The world building, imagery, and overall quality of writing is some of the best I’ve seen! Hailey completely encompasses you in the descriptions and you feel you are right there, especially when describing the revenants (essentially zombies). I could almost feel and taste what she was saying and that is impressive in my book!

Once all the initial background is covered, characters introduced, the chapters continued to switch off POVs based on where and who the story needed to focus on. Keeping all the characters straight was a challenge at first, and I sometimes had to use the glossary if I got stuck, but eventually became easier and each chapter flowed with precision.

About 60% the story starts to pick up with more big events happening and pieces of the puzzle starting to fall into place, even if sometimes more questions were raised. The last 25% or so had action, betrayal, new love, coming into one’s god given powers and rights and I couldn’t put it down at that point. It was edge of your seat with all the revelations, political warfare, and what nows??!!

The spice was great and came at the right times. You got to feel the tension while the couples were apart and enjoyed the relief when back together. Soren and Vanya had some of the hottest scenes, and when Soren said to “put your back into it”, holy smoke I wanted to melt! I can’t wait for more form these two!

I can tell Book 2 is going to bring the epic-ness even further and I can’t wait to get more of Soren and Vanya, Honovi and Blaine, Caris and Nathaniel, and even Eimarille and Terrilyn who I want to hate but can’t lol. Definitely a great read and I will be looking forward to the next adventure!

Okay. That was an incredible start to a brand new and epic fantasy/sci-fi series. I’m so glad the author is currently writing the second book in the series because I am so invested. This is a series that I know is going to be as addictive and engrossing as The Wheel of Time and Dune were for me.

The world building is extremely detailed and fascinating. It can be a little overwhelming at first, but there’s a glossary (at the end of the book/audiobook- beware of spoilers) and a world map (included as a downloadable pdf for the audiobook) that helped me a lot with understanding what was going on. I took the first few chapters a little slow, but once I understood the basics of the world it was very easy for me to pick up on new concepts that were introduced.

There’s also a lot of characters- once again, just taking the first few chapters slow helped me figure out who was who, and once that was done it was easy for me to follow along with all the different character storylines. I really liked how we got multiple character points of view - it really added depth to the story while also creating tension because I felt compassion and understanding for characters who would have otherwise easily been written off as pure evil.

The plot is simple yet oh so complicated. At its surface it’s a struggle for power over a throne. But it becomes so much more than that and there’s schemes within schemes. There’s action, humor, love, and the angst that comes with wars and sacrifice.

The audiobook is narrated by Gary Furlong who deserves a medal for the fantastic job he’s done with voicing so many different characters. There was a whole host of main characters and secondary characters and he was able to make them all distinct while also maintaining consistent sounding voices for all of them. I was highly impressed. Everything about this audio production was well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adult fantasy fiction with m/m pairings to die for
Reviewed in Germany on March 8, 2024
Do you ever get that feeling when you read a new author and you think "oh yeah, they're speaking my language all right!" I got that feeling with Hailey Turner.

She writes ADULT fiction, and I love her for that (I'm sorry, I'm just too old for most YA stories ;)). And it's not just the spicy parts (though she is really REALLY good at those!). I also mean politics, warfare, religion/faith, people's decisions and behaviour. And yes, the fact that she writes m/m romance was the first reason why I ordered her book. And gosh, she has me melting and on my knees for both the m/m pairings in her book!

'The Prince's Poisoned Vow' is fast-paced and gritty, and has everything from a steampunk world to gods who walk among men, to magic, to revenants (can I call them zombies?). The story is told from quite a few characters' points of view. It also has time jumps (minor ones, but they still propel the story along).

    The things I LOVED most:
    > the love stories! Totally on board for the guys, hoping they will all have a happily ever after, I'm a terrible romantic like that.
    > the adult tone. No beating around the bush, the plot if for grown-ups
    > the worldbuilding. It's my very first journey into a steampunk world, and although I needed some time to find my footing, I now enjoy all the gears and cogs and machines immensely. It's all pretty new to me as a genre, and it's huge fun!
    > the mix! At first I was a bit overwhelmed (zombies! magic! gods! steampunk!), but then it all began to go together, and I now think that this mix is so unique, and so much fun, and most definitively a break from elves or dragons.

    Minor points of criticism:
    > it's really very fast-paced. I usually enjoy books that take their time, that spend a lot of time with one character and explore this character inside out.
    > maybe not so many POVs. It would've helped to keep focus on a few characters.
    > the time jumps. But again, this is a very subjective thing and goes together with the first point.

It's still a solid 5 Stars, and I have already started on the second volume!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly impressive.
Reviewed in Italy on May 6, 2022
Well, that was beyond epic. Truly impressive: Hailey Turner was already one of my favourite writers after absolutely adoring her "Soulbound" and "Metahuman Files" series, but well, she utterly outdid herself here.
"The Prince's Poisoned Vow" is very different from what I was expecting and what I was used to. I knew this series was going to be more on the epic fantasy side than the romance one, but I was completely unprepared with how ambitious and epic and monumental this book was, how complex it was, but still beautifully constructed and delightfully plotted.

This novel has has such a rich world-building I was a bit intimidated at first, but as soon as the "introduction" section of the story was done, I actually found it quite easy to follow. Hailey Turner sketches an ambitious world, one that's really vivid and although I cannot, for the life of me, remember how the actual words are spelled, I followed everything quite easily. The same was true for the truly huge cast of characters: after a bit, it got easier and I'm actually quite impressed with myself and with how much I managed to retain. We'll see if my memory holds until the sequel is out.

Plot-wise, I can only applaud Hailey Turner's ingenuity: all character storylines are somewhat intertwined, there's a delightful game of secret identities going on, and I LOVED IT, I loved following each and every single one of these stories and I can already see myself cackling maniacally when all these plot-lines will finally connect to the one big picture. I cannot wait. I literally cannot wait.

I'm a big fan of multiple POVs, so following the numerous (I didn't count how many, but there were A LOT, minor and major) POV characters was a delight. I loved all the (non-villanous) POV characters a lot, although I must admit, I found myself craving Soren's chapters most of all. I knew that was going to happen *sighs*. I loved him so much, he's so intriguing and I sincerely hope he'll get the spotlight he deserves in the next book and maybe a tad bit more character development. I'm sure that will happen though: I can't wait to see him put every single one of Maricol's very selfish rulers in their places (well, expect E'ridia: E'ridia can do NO WRONG and I won't be accepting answers on that front).
Vanya was equally intriguing, and Blaine and Honovi stole my heart OBVIOUSLY: if anything happens to them, I won't be held responsible for my actions. Caris was also lovely, as Nathaniel and all the memebers of the delightful Clockwork Brigade family. Eimarille and her Blade were well-built characters, but I was a tiiiiiny bit disappointed to discover their roles were more on the villanous side, rather than the heroes' one. Not that the other characters are all good and moral or, god forbid, NICE (except Soren, he's my baby, I don't make the rules, sorry!), but I was looking forward to rooting for them but *sighs* that didn't happen. AT ALL.

Anyway, I'm giving this book a solid 4.5. I wasn't the biggest fan of the time jumps (they always stress me out so much) and I kept hoping Soren would have a bigger role in the events unfolding, but I'm sure I'll get my wish sooner rather than later. That ending gave me hope, and also, quite possibly, an ulcer BECAUSE OH MY GOD. The sequel is going to be EPIC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific new series from Hailey 🥳🥳🥳
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 21, 2022
Absolutely magnificent, what a thrilling ride that was. The world-building was superb, the characters fully fleshed, and you will DEFINITELY need to have your wits about you and take serious note of what goes on in the first part of the story 'Inferno'. Hailey certainly threw the kitchen sink at this one...political intrigue, clockwork agents, who to trust, treachery, super secret agents, assassins, Star Gods plotting against one another...honestly, this first part of the Infernal War Saga has it all [although not a lot of romance or sex, so if that's your be-all and end-all for reading M/M, then sorry, this story is not for you].

The Emperor's Bone Palace supposedly comes out next April, but Hailey is convinced that it will be delivered sooner than that, can't wait!! 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

    5 stars.

Wow! Just… wow. This is big. This is epic, and I don’t have the words.

It took me the first few chapters to understand and retain the names of the children, of those who helped them and those who took them in. I actually made notes and kept referring to the Glossary. A lot. After that, as the story grew, it was easy to accept all other characters as they entered the story and their purpose became known.

The gods like to play games and one in particular has created a monster.

I love the fact that it’s a long book, giving me many happy hours of reading something that I can really get my teeth into. There’s nothing fluffy here, folks - in fact, Hailey Turner does not shy away from some very descriptive acts of violence which are completely necessary to the story. There are also tender moments of shared love, familial as well as romantic. The writing style differs from Turner’s other books but as there are four main characters who need their stories’ told, the writing style makes sense.

I am captivated and I’m diving straight into the second book.

»The royal blood lineage of the Rourke family had find their last moments during the tragic night named as the Inferno. But with the meddling of patrons star Gods, three siblings are separated and put to pave a path that serves its God’s intent…but these paths would lead to war or peace? We follow the lives of Soren, Eimarille and Caris as they grow up and are entwined by not only fate, but by war and greed.

»As the first book of a trilogy it did its job of presenting us to a whole new world and a set of amazing characters and their purposes. We reach the end of it with a remarkable set of things happening that all entwine and pave a future that we can’t wait to see the next steps to it - even if in my case I was sobbing in some parts of the end lol.

»THE CHARACTERS! OMG! I feel for their stories and development, they all have duty induced actions but at the same time they acted so differently in the situations presented by them even if duty was the main goal of them. Not only the POV of our mains were enticing but the supporting ones were all well made to fit perfectly to the story in a way that we saw that mattered for us to read in their perspective. (Particularly, my fave characters were Soren, Honovi, Blaine, Caris and Vanya….sorry Eimarille and Tarylin but you lost your position for certain things you did *cries*)

»I loved that some aspects of the plot were put in the back but never stopped mattering to the story, and then later on appearing and making a huge impact on where the plot is going. Loved being surprised and intrigued by all the chapters.
