The Root of It Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

When Max Harley takes on a maternity cover job as a dental assistant in a swanky new private practice, he doesn't for one moment believe he'll fit in, never mind fall desperately in lust with his new boss.

Dr Rowan Thompson is as perfect as they come - tall and handsome, with a great body and an even better personality… There's just one problem - he's married, with a teenage daughter.

Believing he doesn't stand a chance, Max tries to put Rowan out of his mind, until a passionate kiss at a workplace party changes everything.

As Max gets to know Rowan better, he soon discovers the dentist's home life - including his supposed marriage - isn't as perfect as it seems.

Will Max get to the root of the issue, or will keeping their secret be like pulling teeth?

This was a bit of a slower burn, but it's oh so worth every bit of it. I adored Max and his insecure tendencies. He definitely doesn't realize how very attractive he is, and Rowan's story is quite tragic. This definitely made me appreciate dentists more. Lol.

First off, let me say that, overall, this is a pretty good romance. Max, a dental hygienist (as we say in the US) who works for the NHS (National Health Service in Britain), is placed into a hybrid practice (half NHS, half private). He is assigned to work with Rowan, a dentist. Since this book is only written from Max's perception, Rowan is described as almost looking like a greek god. But Rowan seems to be off limits, since he is married and has a teenage daughter. Needless to say, there is more to Rowan than first appearances.

I really liked Max, or as he is called by his friend Becca (a great character!), Max-a-million. He is kind, thoughtful, sensitive, and super sexy. But I have to say I didn't particularly care for Rowan.

I'm sure that is was the intention of the author to present Rowan as a sympathetic character, but in trying to flesh out the nuances, it falls flat to me. Yes, Rowan is married, but the marriage has effectively been over for years. Yes, Rowan's wife is a mean witch (even though Rowan insists she is his best friend!). Yes, Rowan is a devoted dad to his daughter, willing to lie to her about the state of his marriage, although he has been sleeping in a separate room for years. Yes, Rowan is a very closeted homosexual (he even isn't sure he's gay after sleeping with Max!). All of these things should make Rowan relatable, but I have some problems with this.

A list in no particular order:

    1. Rowan is totally oblivious of his attractiveness to either sex. Remember he has the body of a greek god!

    2. Why hasn't Rowan dealt with his clearly over marriage? I just don't buy that it is to protect his daughter. She strikes me as pretty self aware.

    3. Despite Rowan's clear familiarity with gay sex (even Max thinks he is very experienced!), the author vacillates between obvious clues that Rowan has experimented with gay sex and other instances where Rowan claims to be inexperienced.

    4. During their first sexual encounter (wherein Rowan demonstrates his skills), he automatically assumes he is the top. Max is not asked what he would prefer (he is almost always a top), and, in order to please Rowan, he bottoms. What follows is a painful experience for poor Max.

    5. Once a sexual relationship starts, Rowan repeats endlessly to Max that he is working on a solution to his marriage; in effect Rowan gets the best of both worlds. He does not appear to be sympathetic to Max's feelings.

Lastly, a small bit: the author is clearly British, writing for a British audience. I'm just a lowly American, so I could have used a guide to some of the slang. Also, does anyone on either side of the pond still say "whilist" or "leant"?

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received an Advanced Review Copy and am voluntarily reviewing it. This is a MM ROMANCE. Ms. Thorne does it right. Usually MM romances have a somewhat hard edge to them. Max and Rowen reminded me of any other couple. I loved that.

Max Harley started a new job at Avenhill Surgery. He was to fill in for the dental assistant on maternity leave. He knew he was headed for trouble when he saw Dr. Rowen Thompson. This man was fine. Max didn't know how he was going to pull himself together to work with this man day in and day out. Thankfully, he had help. The staff at Avenhill Surgery embraced him right away and he made a fast, close friend in Becca.

Rowen had a lot going on in his life, but he could not deny his attraction to his new dental assistant. When I say a lot, I mean it. This man had a whole family. His daughter, Teegan, was 17 and he and his wife, Christina, had some sort of understanding. Their main goal was making sure Teegan was happy and well taken care of. They were crushing it until Max walked in Avenhill. Rowan had to have him. He could not let this wonderful man slip through his fingers especially after he had a taste. These two fit together so well. As a reader, I was upset that Rowan put Max in this position but I also so desperately wanted them to be together. That's what Ms. Thorne does. Readers will be invested in this story and hoping for the happy ending both Max and Rowen need and deserve.

I frreeakingggg loved this book so much I can't even stop myself from making this a gushing fangirl ramble, but I have to get it out! Because you need to read it!

This book easily climbed into the top as one of my favorite reads this year! Rowan is such a sweetheart and not to mention a total hottie, I would DEFINITELY go to the dentist a lot more if I had him and max working on me. Yes please? I'd like to apply to be a patient! I loved Max so much (also such a hottie). The tension, the love, the absolute growth between both the characters was so perfectly written. AND THE SPICE?! A couple of times I actually caught myself panting like a total weirdo (don't judge me 😂).

And the side characters were so full and perfect even though they weren't the focus! I absolutely loved Becca and I would totally be her in this situation, and if I wasn't her, she'd be my best friend. Oliver? He may have been a side character but that man grew so much, his character development was amazing and I found myself squealing a couple of times.

This book inspired so many emotions in me! Ranging from all out laughter to crying to melting into my seat, all the way to warming my whole heart, and of course frustrating the heck outta me because I was chomping at the bit for their HEA, all of it. I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed reading this book..... If you like MM and workplace romances, spicy scenes with a little extra something-something all wrapped up in a heartwarming, humor filled, emotional collar coaster bow.... THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

This is the first read from this author, and wow, just wow!  I loved the story of Max and Rowan. It was sweet. It was angsty, and it was HOT! I fell fast and hard for this couple, and I laughed with them, and I definitely cried with them. This is one of my favorite MM lighter reads that I think I have ever read.  I want more! I need more reads from this author! I implore you to grab this if you are looking for a heartfelt MM read. This was perfect in every way!
