The Seas of Time: Harbor Pointe Series Book 4 Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

The Harbor Pointe Inn has loomed on California’s cliffs for generations of Hawthornes. For some, it’s been a blessing. For others, a curse. Travel through two centuries of stories to discover the old inn’s secrets.

In 1858, a ship carrying ice from Alaska wrecked off the coast of California, and little does Taliah Keldan realize how that tragedy will impact her life in 1972.

When Tali decides to quit college and become a civil rights activist, her disappointed parents encourage her to think it over. What better spot for contemplation than at her aunt and uncle’s Harbor Pointe Inn, a charming seaside getaway with its own lighthouse? The place is under renovation and empty of guests. All she’ll have to deal with is the construction crew.

But the inn is far from peaceful.

Tali discovers an old Bible hidden in the lighthouse keeper’s cottage. Strange prayers angle down the margins, all but one ruined by the sea. When she deciphers the crude writing, a dark portal gapes open to a pre-civil war night when an escaped slave in a foundering ship prayed to his voodoo God. A winged creature emerges from the watery void, and her stay transforms into a nightmare.

With the aid of the construction foreman, Tali is determined to send the beast back through time, a choice that will risk their lives, test her convictions, and change her future.

The Seas of Time: Harbor Pointe Series Book 4 is full of fantasy, time travel, voodoo magic, and social issues with the quaint backdrop of the Harbor Pointe Inn along the Pacific Ocean. Each book in this series is different from the others in that they are written by different authors and are in eclectic genres.

This tale is told in two timelines, 1858 and 1972, through the eyes of a young woman, Tali. There are plenty of adventures between the two timelines that test Tali.

She leaves school to take some time to think over what she would do with her future and takes on the job of caretaker of her aunt’s and uncle’s inn while they go on vacation during the renovations of the inn. What she finds there is anything but a relaxed atmosphere that she was hoping would be conducive to painting and thinking about her future.

When she finds a bible with odd incantations, she reads it out loud and strange things begin to happen in the cottage she is staying in. She finds herself with a monster who invades her space and eats all her food. She tries to find out where it came from and why it is there. This is just the beginning of her surprising adventures.

This was another enjoyable book in this series. I look forward to more in this intriguing and cleverly written series by some talented and creative authors.

One of the Harbor Pointe series, this is the most imaginative one I've read. It's split time, 1858 (on a ship) and 1972 (when Tali goes to Harbor Pointe to watch the inn for her aunt and uncle). But an old Bible with extra voodoo notes leads to meeting a winged gargoyle that loves gingersnap cookies, and certainly isn't what it seems like. I appreciated the author's note revealing how she came to write this astonishing tale.

    D. Wallace Peach's The Seas of Time, Book 4 in the Harbor Pointe Series, starts in 1859 when a violent storm causes a ship to founder and kill most of its hands off the California coast. One black man (I don't usually note skin color, but in this case, it is significant) who is chained below decks may have called down the disaster by beseeching a dark magic sea god from his youth to save him from sure death. Before we know if he lives through this disaster, we are transported to the 1970s, to Harbor Point with its lighthouse, Inn, and restaurant. Tali, a young black girl, quit college to pursue a passion as a black causes activist, but is persuaded by her parents to think about it before making a final decision by spending a few months as caretaker of the closed Harbor Pointe Inn, owned by white family members (again, skin color is significant here). The  day she arrives, she finds herself ensnared in the life of an ageless winged monster who lives in the lighthouse, befriends him with the help of a (white) construction foreman in charge of renovating the Inn, and must figure out how to save his life.

The further into this story I got, the more I realized it was as much a coming of age story for Tali with her dreams of changing the world as it was a paranormal or time travel tale. As she struggles to understand what anyone else would see as a dangerous monster, she comes to realize that righting  injustice is more complicated than wearing a tshirt and spouting good intentions. This is a deep story that will leave readers with a lot to think about, as well as earworm-like memories that pop up as reminders in our modern-day life. Even if you're not into paranormal or time travel, this book is well worth the time.

I’m a fan of Diana W Peach’s fantasy. Her well-developed world, characterization, and vivid imagery fascinate me. I know it would be a treat to read her novella and she never disappoints me. The Seas of Time, book 4 of the Harbor Pointe series, is a time travel tale. The ship Zenobia traveled from Alaska to San Francisco, carrying 800 tons of ice in 1858. The crewmen assault the escaped slave, Sam, when the ship is in danger of sinking.

The time travels to 1972 when Tali, a 19-year-old girl of mixed colors, wants to quit college to become an activist to change the world. Her parents send her to Harbor Pointe, to take care of her aunt and uncle’s inn while they go on vacation in Scotland. She stays at the stone cottage of the lighthouse and stumbles upon a Bible. When she reads aloud the scribbling on the margin, it opens a passage where an imp-troll-like gargoyle jumps out. The gargoyle acts like a toddler monkey, jumping around, and eating up her snacks with a big mess in the room. She tries to send him back to where he comes from. She finds out the gargoyle can understand her and communicates with a few sounds.

She meets Greg, who supervises the renovation of the Inn. Greg looks at the mess in the room, suspects a break-in, and wants to call the police. She has no choice but to show the gargoyle and the Bible to him. When Greg tries to read the scribbling, the passage opens again and sends both to the ship in 1858.

The story is full of exhilarating actions from the beginning to the end. The vivid scenes keep me reading to find out what happens next. It is a story of realism showing the racial tension and the struggles of the colored throughout the decades. The readers find the injustice familiar. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story you live rather than merely read

Our ability to reach unity in diversity
will be the beauty and test
    of our civilization
    ~Mahatma Gandhi

Wonderful opening quote, which sets the tone perfectly.

The book opens in 1858, where a great wrong occurs. The next chapter takes the reader into the turmoil of 1972, where racial and gender prejudice remains rife despite the 114 years interval.

A feisty young woman of colour takes a summer break to attempt to find some direction in her life, other than constant protests and a useless history course that seems irrelevant amidst the social upheaval all around. Her aunt and uncle offer her the use of the Harbor Pointe Inn while they go away, and here she meets Greg. Immediately, sparks fly, and not of the romantic kind. One thing leads to another, and the modern fight merges with that of a century prior. Friendships form and attitudes shift.

As with all of D Wallace Peach's books, the writing is superb with beautiful and evocative phrasing, which pulls in all of the reader’s senses so that one lives the story rather than merely reads it. Below are some lines I adored …

‘The iron hands of oppression bore down on his shoulders, heavier than the black wings of death.’

    And …

‘With the lighthouse a short walk away, the place belonged on a calendar, and it often was.’

    And …

‘It looked unchanged from a century before—the bluff sheer and dappled with bird crap, gulls wheeling overhead, the swells rising and falling, and the surf polishing billions of pebbles and grains of sand.’

    And …

‘“… starving artists are real things.” |“So are starving carpenters.”’ … lols! This shows the wonderful banter between the all-too real characters as well as the humour which weaves throughout this fantastic narrative.

One final line, because I love this mind-bending time-loop stuff … ‘If you hadn’t gone back in time to change his future, you might not exist to go back in time and change his future.’

If you haven’t guessed already from my gushing, I give a solid five stars to The Seas of Time by D Wallace Peach, who is one of my auto-buy authors, and whose back catalogue I seriously need to devour. If I could give this wonderful novella ten stars, I’d do it in a heartbeat. With racial and gender prejudice mixed and melded with the perils of seafaring and gods and demons, along with a strong female main character, you’ll love this read. Go and buy this book!

NOTE ON RATINGS: I consider a 3-star rating a positive review. Picky about which books I give 5 stars to, I reserve this highest rating for the stories I find stunning and which moved me.

5 STARS: IT WAS AMAZING! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! — Highly Recommended.
4 STARS: I WOULD PULL AN ALL-NIGHTER — Go read this book.
3 STARS: IT WAS GOOD! — An okay read. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.
2 STARS: I MAY HAVE LIKED A FEW THINGS —Lacking in some areas: writing, characterisation, and/or problematic plot lines.
1 STAR: NOT MY CUP OF TEA —Lots of issues with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A journey through two timelines

A two-timeline story that begins in 1858 with Samuel, an escaped black slave stowed away on a foundering ship and his voodoo prayer to Damballah, the ancient sea god, recited from his bible in his cries for freedom. That same bible is found in 1972 by Tali, a college student fighting for civil rights, while visiting her aunt’s Inn in Harbor Pointe for a college timeout. After Tali finds the bible in the lighthouse and recites the barely almost legible only prayer that hasn’t been washed away by sea water, all hell breaks loose.

Peach is known for her wonderfully woven fantasy stories, and this story is an exciting twist of both, the real world, racism, mixed with paranormal fantasy as Talia makes a dangerous mistake by reading out the prayer passage from that bible, and unlocks a portal, unleashing a gargoyle. While the Inn is under construction, the only others around are the work crew and Greg the foreman who becomes ensnared in this fantastical story as he enters the cottage where Talia is struggling to deal with the almost compassionate beast that is now taking over the cottage. The struggle is to try and send gargoyle, Zam, back to whence he came. And eventually, as Tali and Greg struggle to tame the beast, on a wild journey they find themselves back in 1858 where they piece together the origins of what transpired back then.

Peach is a masterful writer of fantasy whose stories never fail to draw us in with her page-turning evocative stories and prose. I am looking forward to reading all the books in this stand alone series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Harbour Pointe Series, every story a winner!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2023

After reading the first three stories, I wasn’t sure what to expect with book four of the Harbour Pointe series. Harbour Pointe is a beautiful, yet mysterious place steeped in mystery and possibilities.
Spanning two centuries, this series explores the Inn and the lighthouse, taking full advantage of the atmospheric aura that spreads like the sea mist over everything.

In book four, Taliah Keldan is the latest visitor to Harbour Pointe, unaware that her presence and finding a sea-damaged bible could trigger an ancient magic that can change her life forever.
This incredible story has voodoo magic, ghosts, demons, and more than enough excitement and suspense.
I defy anyone to choose a favourite from this series, as each and every one brings something wonderful and different to the table.

I wonder what my next visit to Harbour Pointe will bring?

the similarities (the location) and the differences.
It was interesting reading each style of writing from each author as well as their take on what to write.
