Barry Finlay is a fiction and non-fiction author. In his previous life, he had an extensive career in financial management before retiring in 2004 after thirty two years with the Canadian federal government. Since retiring, he has divided his time between writing, working as a consultant on financial policy matters, travel, playing golf, climbing mountains, philanthropy and enjoying his three grandchildren.

In 2009, Barry got off the couch and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with his son, Chris. The experience of climbing Africa's highest mountain at age 60 with one of his sons and discovering the satisfaction of reaching a goal and giving others the opportunity to achieve theirs, was a non-fiction book waiting to be written. The travel memoir and inspirational Kilimanjaro and Beyond has won numerous awards and Barry was featured in the Authors Show book, "50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading" as a result.

He enjoyed the writing experience so much he has since written eleven more published books, including the humorous travel memoir, I Guess We Missed The Boat, the five-book Marcie Kane Thriller Collection and the three-book (so far) Jake Scott Mystery Series. Many of his books have received literary awards and achieved Amazon bestseller status.

His most recent release, Just Keep Climbing, chronicles the inspirational stories of eight people as they face the challenges life has thrown at them. All of them have the resolve to just keep climbing. Just Keep Climbing reached the shortlist in the Page Turner Awards Non Fiction category and received a Bronze medal in the Reader Views Reviewers Choice Awards Self Help category.

Barry is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal for philanthropy. He lives with his wife Evelyn in Ottawa, Canada.

    This was my first Barry Finlay novel and I was extremely pleased to discover a new favorite! A Secret Truth is a true detective novel, as Jake Scott (the main character/typical, dashing leading man, must explore the reasons someone seems to be trying to kill him and why he's a target! Often I know who it is long before the character (even though they're an investigator by trade) figures it out! It was also great because it was somewhat shocking without the total gore I read in other books but just enough to be titillating! It's a definite read! I was gifted this book but I'll be buying more in the future!

    This was a good story. It’s the first Jake Scott book I’ve read. Jake’s an investigative reporter, retired in this book, but still seems eager to get in the middle of things. He doesn’t have to look far in this book since a B&B he’s staying in is blown to bits. Fortunately for him, he was out at the time. Unfortunately for the other residents, they weren’t.

    As I said, this is a good story. While it has your normal “cop” included, he is a she, and Dani seems on the way to a relationship with Jake who lost his wife some time ago. So, there’s a little romance but not anything too deep nor embarrassing. It has a well-drawn plot; most everything moves along smoothly and is not easily solvable.

    I did have one problem with this book. It does not detract from the story enough to give it a low rating, but the author tends to use the character names repetitively in dialogs. When it is obvious to the reader that only two people exist in a room, the use of “Ok Jake” “Want more wine Dani” “Fine Jake” “Should we have something to eat Dani” “Good idea Jake” makes what really is a good story quite choppy. It doesn’t exist anywhere except in dialog sections.

    I have not read the previous Jake Scott stories and am only commenting on this particular book. As I also said, it did not detract enough to stop reading. In fact, the story was good enough to check out the other books.

    This was my first book by Barry Finlay. I enjoyed the journey from murder to capture with all the different aspects coming into play. It kept me guessing. Clues were pulled together in a kind of haphazard method and gave the reader a lot to think about. The personal side of Jake and Dani, and their families added to the storyline, and now I would like to read the next in the series to see how everything progresses. This story was worth the read.
