From the Inside Flap

The world in the Light and Shadow Chronicles is in a state of eternal conflict between two nations - The Children of Light and Brotherhood of Shadow. They have been at war for thousands of years, in a stalemate that is manipulated by forces greater than any of the characters realise. In order for one side to shift the scales in their favour they have to recruit greater forces - angels, demons, dragons, armies of the underworld, magical beings etc. The war continues to grow in scale until the entire world is dragged into the conflict and it can only end in a cataclysmic Armageddon.

Each of the novels in the series focuses on a significant character or group and their role within the battle. Every story is laying the foundations for something else, like building blocks for the epic finale. The books are written out of order - one story may feature a character in his adulthood, the next is set before he is born, the next after his death. Putting the order of events together is up to the reader.

This means that the reader may choose their own journey through the saga. If they feel connected to a certain character, they can follow that individual's story first. And if they join the series after book 5 is released, there is no need to read books one through four first.

D.M. Cain has another winner in The Shield of Soren (The Light and Shadow Chronicles Book 2). What will a young boy do when his mother is too busy running a country to pay attention to him, his father's so wrapped up in an unbearable grief, and his brothers are already grown and fighting to protect the land from the Brotherhood of Shadow? Chances are he's going to find some kind of mischief to get into, only this time, the safety of his entire family is at risk.

You'll love the good vs evil, angel vs demon theme that runs through this book. There are so many characters that you'll want to learn more about when you close the final page, that you'll be joining me in begging Cain for more on each of them. Even the evil leader of the Brotherhood of Shadow has to have a backstory that will both thrill and terrify us.

I'm delighted with the depth of the young Soren Nitaya and how he interacted with the various members of his family. His talents and intelligence would definitely put him at the top of his class, but those same assets will help him piece together the puzzle of the ancient prophecy. This is definitely a Coming of Age fantasy young and old alike will not be able to put down until they've read the last page. I definitely recommend this book.

This is the 2nd read for me from Author, D. M. Cain and as before, she didn't disappoint me.

A good writer knows how to pace a story just right so that the reader doesn't lose interest but instead, their curiosity is piqued. A good writer crafts characters so well that you feel their "realness." A good writer makes the reader believe in every bit of her "make believe"...worlds, characters, language, etc.

Young Soren, in all his defiance (when he was upset that his mom didn't do something he felt she should have done....I won't give any spoilers here), reminded me of so many kids I know his age; older brother, Deveron - as protective as any older sibling would be; and mom, Callista, feels the pain, love and responsibility to her children just as I, as a mom, feels toward my daughters. Again, well-crafted.

A good writer runs the gamut on storytelling that doesn't miss a bit. The writing packs a powerful punch and when the blow lands, it hits hard and makes you remember the story and the writer who brought it all to life for you!

You want to read this book!

The Shield of Soren by D.M. Cain is an adventure tale in a fantasy world that could be real. Cain has once again set the stage with good versus evil in way that makes me want more. No spoilers. Read it yourself. You won't be sorry.

This book is rather an enjoyable read. The characters are unique and the war is somewhat haunting. I enjoyed the story immensely.

I received from the author in return for an honest review.

The Shield of Soren is the second book in what is planned to be an epic series. We were introduced to some of the characters in the first one, A Chronicle of Chaos.

Chronologically, Soren takes place before Chaos, but as it’ll be possible to read the entire series in any order, it’s a seamless transition from one book to the next.

While supernatural and fantasy elements make their presence felt – particularly towards the end – this storyline focuses on a period in the Matriarch of The Children Of Light, Callista Nienna’s life when she is married to her fourth husband, Kham Nitaya. It tells of the family’s desperate race against time as they try to save ten-year-old Soren from a dreadful fate following an encounter with the Children Of Light’s sworn enemies The Brotherhood Of Shadow.

With well developed characters and a solid, exciting plot, D.M. Cain’s skilful writing takes us on a family journey of ties and relationships, grief, love and loss. Oh, and don’t forget the violence, blood and pain that characterise this author’s work in her previous novel in this series, and her brilliant stand-alone debut novel The Phoenix Project.

This is a must for fantasy lovers, and I hope the next book in the series isn’t too long coming.

I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

The plot is juvenile and very predictable. From the beginning you could guess what would happen. None of the actions of the characters made much sense. Very disappointing.

The Shield of Soren (The Light and Shadow Chronicles Book 2) by D.M. Cain is getting the same 5 stars I gave its predecessor, A Chronicle of Chaos, but these are very different books. Although they take place in the same universe, and feature many of the same characters, The Shield of Soren features a much youn ger protaganist and the tale becomes more of a coming of age tale, rather than the epic tale of war that Chronicle of Chaos was. Shield of Soren feels quieter and more introspective as a result, and preseents a different side to characters we have had already made up our mind about.

Some things haven't changed between the two books, however. The writing is still as detailed and vivid as ever; it isn't dumbed down or less mature just because the protagonist is younger this time around. The world is still as fully defined, and the scale feels as grand as ever, with so many characters and families spread out over intersecting timelines. This world is epic on a Game of Thrones level, and it would be a shame to miss out on this integral chapter from these chronicles.

An advance reader's copy was provided to me by the author.

Wow...what a page turner. I couldn't put it down. This is not my usual genre so I was surprised at how much I loved the book. It's a great story, cleverly written but also beautifully written. The words painted very vivid pictures of the characters, the land, the buildings, thd costumes - I was there, so much so that I could see this on the big screen.

Always sad when a book ends as I miss the characters. So I'm really looking forward to the third book in the series.

A page-turner that lives long in the memory. Cain again uses the fast-paced style seen in her previous works The Phoenix Project and Chronicles of Chaos but this time around has added a higher-level of emotional depth to the characters.
