After the campaign against the Norse, Melcorka the Swordswoman is unsettled.

She wishes revenge on Egil the Norseman, yet knows that Defender - her magic sword - cannot kill without cause.

After a visit to the seer Fitheach, Melcorka receives a dire warning. They head toward the Western Isles in search of knowledge, facing many dangers on their path.

With the help of pirate leader Osprey and Hector, leader of the Ulvust, they forge on toward the Standing Stones of Callanish to face the most fearsome foe of all: The Shining One.

Based on an old Scottish legend that incorporates the stone circle temples of long ago, The Shinning one sends Melcorka, the Swordswoman and her companion, Brandon, on a torturous search for an ancient Wise Man or Sage. She isn’t sure how Brandon intends to find him as the man is long dead, but the man is said to be found in his ancient temple. The search leads them to embattled islands, but are the embattled because of man or because of enchantment? They encounter foe after foe, but Melcorka’s sword gives her special powers and protection. Brandon, the Wanderer’s, cane seems to do the same for him, but will these special resources protect them in the final battle as they try to rescue their island friends? Will the ancient wise man or the Shinning be found? Could the wise man and the Shinning One of legend be connected with the remote temple? I cannot spoil the page turning ending by answering those questions for this author does a masterful job building suspense.

Again I was caught from page one and could not stop reading. This story had it all mermaids who were evil, seal who were really silkies and the Morigan spreading wickedness where ever she could. I highly recommend this book.

I read the first two of the Melcorka and Braden series this weekend and spent a good portion of time on my couch, enthralled instead of doing what I should have. What fun!

Excellent follow-up!!! Not only do Mel and Braden have more quests their relationship is becoming more defined. Because I've never really read about Celtic mythology I do find myself having to stop and look up some of the gods.

A great story covered in the first two books. I am looking forward to the next in the series. The story borders on Christianity

5.0 out of 5 stars A whirlwind of action from start to finish.

Wow! It's not often you start a book where the action begins on the first page and then carries you like a whirlwind all the way through to the end, but that's just what I got with the latest episode in the saga of Melcorka the Swordswoman and Bradan the Wanderer. This book really does stretch the reader's imagination, as our heroes encounter selkies (mythological part seal, part human beasties), a woman who isn't a woman, (don't ask, just read), and all manner of warmongering tribesmen. At times, it's hard to keep up with the action which is fast and furious throughout. I loved this book which again shows the author's uoerb knowledge of the myths and legends of Scotland and his descriptive writing of the lives and times of those people from the far mists of time is superb. 5 stars hardly does it justice!
