The Stalking Dead (Gang of Ghouls Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 3,485 ratings

Kinda dead. Straight-up psycho. Totally obsessed with her.

I did a bad, bad thing.

Thanks to a blank in my memory, I'm not sure what that thing was, but it was horrible enough to get me locked up in the mental ward for seven years. Horrible enough that my little sister won't even speak to me.

But when I'm released back into a town determined to rub my unknown sins in my face, the past isn't the only thing that's haunting me. The four "imaginary" friends who made my childhood bearable barge into my life in a very real way.

They're crude, criminally inclined, and more than a little unstable after ages trapped in afterlife limbo. All they want is to protect me. Worship me. Avenge me.

So they'll bludgeon, maim, eviscerate—tear a strip of havoc right through this sleepy town.

Even rise from the dead.

Maybe I'm still not all that sane either, because part of me finds them strangely appealing. In ways very different from how I felt as a kid. And that's not the only strangeness stirring inside me...

I promised myself I'd stick to the straight and narrow from here on. But what if the only way to set things right is to get a little ghoulish?

*The Stalking Dead is the first in a darkly humorous new paranormal romance series by bestselling author Eva Chase. If you love sarcastic heroines with unexpected powers, obsessive supernatural men who'll do anything to defend their woman, and plenty of mystery and mayhem, dive right in!*

Spirits of the Night
My Review: 4 ⭐️ 3 🌶️ Looking for a paranormal read that’s not your typical ghostly affair? Enter Lily: seven years in a psych ward, no clue why, and now she’s back at college getting bullied because small towns love their drama. Oh, and her imaginary childhood friends? Turns out they’re real ghosts who want to help—but first, they need bodies (don’t we all?). Kai, one of the ghosts, comes up with the world’s worst plan, and chaos naturally follows. The pace is slow, but the humor and “gang of dead dudes” vibes keep it fun. Think 80s street gang meets supernatural shenanigans, and you’re halfway there. With mystery, snarky spirits, and a cliffhanger that’s criminal, this book will have you begging for the sequel faster than you can say “reverse harem.” If you liked the Dark Side Series by Kristy Cunning then move The Stalking Dead up your TBR!

This story starts face paced and stays there with all of its twists and turns! The characters draw you in. The super natural twists are so unique. To top it off are all the things you end up laughing about. I honestly don't know what I expected from this book, but it was 100 times better! The ending...oh the ending...I'm so glad I can dive right into the next book!

This is perfect book if you’re looking for something different in the paranormal landscape. Lily has lost several years of her life, not knowing why she was put into an institution. When she was a young, she spent time at a marsh, making up imaginary friends to help herself cope. Little did Lily know, is that those imaginary friends were actually real ghosts, and when she gets released from the mental institution and is off to university, she gets a lot of bullying from the other students. All Lily wants is to be close to her sister, whom she hasn’t seen since she was put away. But the ghosts that entertained Lily as a kid, are now wanting to help protect her, but they can’t do it without bodies. One of the ghosts, Kai, devises a hair-brained scheme to get bodies and all chaos erupts. Eventually, they convince Lily of who they are.

This is a bit slow at times, but overall, it’s got a sense of humor and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It looks like it’s a slow burn to a reverse harem and the book changes from chapter to chapter with each character’s POV. Good start to a series, and I’m definitely planning on continuing.

I really wanted to love this book. The blurb sounded fascinating. As I read the first 2/3 of the book I was excusing the fact it read more like a the person was trying to show not tell but had no clue how to do so. Once you get through that the story and action pick up and become interesting. I kept reading because the blurb led me to believe this was more than just a girl with mental issues being bullied. Other than her 4 friends taking over bodies so they were no longer spirits the majority of the book was just a girl who spent 7 yrs in a psych hospital for reasons she didn’t remember being bullied at college for having been in the hospital to start with. The reader finally gets their first clues about what is actually happening in the last 2 chapters. I fully intend to continue the series since the last 2 chapters pulled me into wanting answers. I sincerely doubt I will read this book again though. I think the scenes outside school were intended to act as breadcrumbs but outside wondering about why there were frogs everywhere I really couldn’t figure out why the world building and plot creation were taking forever since this wasn’t an epic fantasy. It took me over 2/3 of the book to realize this was a reverse harem.
Im honestly not sure what the issue with this book is since I have read others by this author that didn’t drag like this. I’m hoping that the remainder of the series picks up.

The premise sounded so cool. To be honest, I thought it would be a kind of Drop Dead Fred meets Harley Quinn sort of thing. I even recommended it to my boss while reading--that before I realized that this was a reverse harem book about two thirds of the way in. Yep. Color me embarrassed.

Miss Chase HOW CAN YOU END IT LIKE THIS?!?!?!?! Darn it, this will keep me up for some time to come ....

We have our FMC who was released from the mental hospital after 7 years with no clue why she was even there in the first place. She comes back to her home town with the plan to get back to her sister by being the perfect citizen. This is not what the students at college she goes to want for her though.

This sets up events that gives us our slightly unhinged ghost men.

I love them all, I have just added them to my ever-growing Harem or small village I must say now, and the story is amazing the characters are amazing and that cliffhanger leaves me begging for more !!

I liked other works by the author, and liked the cover design of the books (I know, never judge a book by its cover). The premise sounded interesting. I ordered all 4 books, read 1 and 2, and gave up. I just wasn't interested enough in the books to keep going. I'm usually fine with heavy violence in books, like the Anita Blake series, Kate Daniels books, etc. I also like some books where the villain is the hero. But the violence in the ghouls books seemed to come out of nowhere, and the response by the four " heroes" to minor infractions or even just to show they were the boss to new people they met was the same as the response to really bad guys doing really bad things: beat the everliving crap out of them, then beat them some more until they're pulp, and completely demolish everything in sight. Totally over the top. I never return books, but I'm returning the whole series. The reason I spend the money to buy paper versions of books instead of e-book versions is because I treasure them and plan on rereading them multiple times over the years, but I wasn't interested enough to even finish reading these once.

5.0 out of 5 stars The narration is to die for!
Reviewed in Canada on July 26, 2023
This was an enjoyable read. A bit more tamed spice than what I usually go for but the story and especially that quirky narration more than makes up for it.

I love Lily and I can’t wait to see her getting more and more comfortable with who she is. As for the guys… they’re all so unique in their own way.

Wrap that in a good plot with a big dash of paranormal and a hint of mystery and you have an entertaining read! I can’t wait to see what happens!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Eva!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 21, 2022
This is the first book in the Gang of Ghouls series. And another book by Eva Chase that I really enjoyed!

Lily has recently been released from a psych ward where she spent seven year of her life for something she can’t even remember doing. Now she’s back in her home town trying to prove that she’s sane enough to be in her sisters life. But with all of the harassment she’s getting it’s pretty hard. However, she had four ghostly friends who have come back from the dead to help and protect her.

What I really liked is the character development so far. Normally, you wouldn’t really see much development in the first book, but Lily is another strong FMC. At first she just wanted to not cause anymore trouble but then she soon realises that it doesn’t matter what she does people are still going to try to hurt her.

Her four ghostly guys - Nox, Ruin, Kai & Jett - are very protective of Lily and are not afraid to hurt anyone who hurts her. I loved that there is already sexual tension between them all and some things are already advancing with some members of the haram. Of course Eva does not disappoint with the spice once again!!

The story is left on a cliffhanger, which means I’ll be diving straight into book 2, eager to find answers to my questions.

The language is good and I had no Problem with the language.
But it's plain boring, nothing happens half the book. I can't understand why nobody calls the police or any authorities... It just doesn't make any sense to me.
Maybe there will be some interesting plot, but I am not patient enough for it to start.

    Stars given on level of engagement;

5 stars - less than a day to read because I cannot put it down. I only give 5 stars if it has managed to engage extra emotions from me - extreme lol moments or real teary moments etc. A 5 stars book tends to have me raging about cliff hangers and (legally and not creepily) stalking the author for release dates.

4 stars - 2 days to read or less. A book that I have quite enjoyed reading, feisty MC and some racy scenes with thier romantic interest. I would definitely follow a series and author for 4 star books.

3 stars - takes around 2/3 days to read, usually because I have become distracted and less engaged in some sections but by the end the end I have enjoyed the overall story and would read any sequels.

1/2 stars not given, as I have usually returned it without finishing as I'm not engaged. .
