About the author

Elizabeth O'Roark has a bunch of degrees she does not use and gave up working as a medical writer to craft grumpy, alpha heroes and the flawed women who love them. When not writing, she likes to spend time with her three kids, who are now teenagers and wish she'd find a different way to spend time. She can be found on Facebook feverishly debating whether or not "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie and telling people to read "The Hating Game", which she did not write but wishes she had.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024First of all, Juliet and Luke will live in my mind forever.
But second, I comment primarily on the complexity of the MC’s backstory because their deep connection could only happen through shared understanding of the others struggles.
Once I reached the end I immediately went back to the beginning to revisit Juliet and Luke’s story with new eyes. Theirs is one of the more compelling emotional romances I’ve read — and the manner the story unfurls from Now to Then — highlights the many ways their relationship grew and continues to weigh on their current dynamic.
One of the main themes is the comparison between Juliet and the Allen’s, the evolution of their relationship as Juliet tries to balance her experience with the prim rules of those unencumbered by trauma and self-hatred.
Luke sees how painfully shallow Juliet’s life is forced to become in the Allens household for what she feels is repayment for their shelter and protection. He bristles at the life he doesn’t feel she should accept and disapproves of the minimal emotional support and love her boyfriend Danny is able to provide. EO does a great job of mixing the anger and frustration Luke feels with the self hatred and doubt Juliet feels to create a VALID miscommunication - atypical of romance novels. (Meanwhile the later/final plot conflict is a typical invalid miscommunication that knocks the overall plot.)
The main plot here is still their relationship which is painful, deep, connected, and intense.
And another great sub-theme is the dynamic between the Allen’s imaginary world and the pain that real life usually brings, is perfectly and sadly expressed here:
“The air hangs heavy between me and Luke for the rest of dinner, but the Allens don’t even seem to notice. They are baby fish, being circled by two Great Whites. They won’t know what’s happened until Luke and I have devoured them all.”
Really loved this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025Don’t let the illustrated cover fool you. This is not a cozy, feel good romcom. Its full of tension and angst and some WTF moments. You’ll get angry at the FMC for allowing everyone to walk all over her but at the same time you understand her feeling of hopelessness based on where she came from. It is such a back and forth of emotions as you read through a timeline of past and present. Its messy, its emotional, its even heavy at times. I was not expecting this sort of read and really enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2023Juliet Cantrell's story is finally here. She was first introduced in The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, but this book is a standalone and while it is not so much witty banter and entertaining dialogue like the Devil series, it is angst and prolonged pining. I love Elizabeth O' Roark's writing, she creates a tension between her characters like no other and I'm always along for the ride. Juliet hasn't had it easy growing up and is finally in a stable environment living with her boyfriend's parents, a pastor and his wife who took her in after a last straw kind of incident after a long line of terrible experiences. My heart cracked for Juliet's upbringing and the trauma and volatility she was exposed to, making her question her ability to trust and to love and to put herself first. She's constantly warring with herself between doing better and accepting that she isn't ever going to fit the mold to belong in a pastor's family because she desperately wants unconditional acceptance, but feels like she traded one cage for another.
Luke Taylor is everything Juliet ever dared to want, but never knew could exist in a single man. I adored Luke. He reminds me of Josh in the way that there is no length that he won't go to in order to protect or to avenge someone he cares about and he won't make any apologies for it either. He's definitely an act first, think later kind of guy. I loved how these two felt seen and heard by each other on the most essential level even without the conversation. Never mind the blazing chemistry between them that always hung like a live wire ready to ignite. Of course he is an amazing surfer, too, with the personality and sexiness to match.
Juliet's vulnerability and strength humbled me given how much she was wiling to sacrifice for the greater good, especially towards anyone who earned her affection. She had been minimized for so long that she underestimated her influence, yet she is capable of so much more with her talent and her mind. Luke is like the number one fan that is missing from Juliet's life, yet he also has his own hopes and dreams that he works hard to make come true with his own skills. They shared a bond of two underestimated individuals who had been stepped on along the way, finally paving their own paths. There's a wide range of feels associated with this one, but the most prevailing one is the longing and sacrifice as it ranges from past and present and appears that Luke and Juliet are at odds with each other and keeping secrets most of the time with a history that only they know about. I was anxiously turning the pages because they drew me into their story where I was shipping them so hard and couldn't accept any other outcome. The ending was absolutely worth the journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025I looooove Elizabeth O’Roark! Like the way she writes her books just suck you in and you never want to leave….this one though 😭
I DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT like cheating and this one was riddled with it. Like I legit want to gag when it happens in books. It’s such a crappy way to treat another individual that you are supposed to like/love. And if they had just NOT done anything until they were both single, this book would’ve been great. Some authors annotate that there is cheating in their books because it is a trigger for people.
Juliet and Luke had a really great connection and I loved everything about how Elizabeth portrays the relationship between Juliet and Danny in a way that doesn’t make him a bad person just the *wrong* person for her. I understand her feeling trapped and indebted to his family. I get all that and I just wish this could have worked out with more angst and no cheating. I also didn’t care for going back and forth so much. It was like time traveling on steroids and it was kind of annoying.
I’ll continue reading Elizabeth’s books but this one was a huge let down for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2025This was an incredible listen. These two fantastic narrators delivered an incredible performance. I loved how the author delivered the plot by slowly giving you information. I highly recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new book boyfriend
What can I say, I'm in ❤️, Luke's everything you wish in a main character, the broodiness, beauty, incondicional love and passion, and Juliet is been fighting to get a float her whole life, loved this book, so raw and real, yet they got their HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amor wn agonía!!!
