A lost treasure, an impenetrable puzzle, a psychopathic killer: a deadly combination.
The Temple Scroll is a rollercoaster ride of danger, mystery, and murder. From New England to the islands of the Mediterranean, follow the deadly hunt for the Templars’ lost treasure.
Archaeology lecturer Sam Cameron and church minister Helen Johnson thought their old problems were done - they were wrong. Killers are set on finding the Templars’ treasure and they believe Sam and Helen hold the key. As the psychopathic Cassiter directs his team of killers towards their goal, the calm of summer vanishes in an explosive bout of blood and suffering.
Under pressure from every side, Sam and Helen must draw on all their instincts and professional skills to stay alive and crack the puzzle that protects the Templars’ treasure. As the search for the Templar hoard moves inexorably to a conclusion, Sam and Helen must risk all in a frantic bid to save their friends, the treasure, and the priceless holy relics of the early Church. Now there is no mercy and no escape - there is only win or die.
This second book in THE TEMPLE series may be read as a standalone. Some readers might like to read THE TEMPLE LEGACY first since it gives the backstory to characters and events featured here.

About the author

A first career in the Merchant Navy saw Macey’s early working life devoted to travelling the globe. In the process, it gave him an introduction to the mad mix of beauty, kindness, cruelty and inequality that is the human experience everywhere. Between every frantic coastal encounter was a trip across the ocean, which brought the contrast of tranquil moments and offered time for reading, writing and reflection.
Those roving days came to a close, however, with Macey serving as a ship’s officer in the North Sea oil industry.
Thereafter, several years working in business made it apparent that Macey’s greatest commercial skill was the ability to convert tenners into fivers, effortlessly and unerringly – a skill that ensured Macey had the unwelcome experience of encountering those darker aspects of life that lie beneath the veneer of our developed world and brought fleeting glimpses into the shadows where bad things lurk.
Eventually, life’s turbulence, domestic tragedy and impending poverty demanded a change of course. As a result, more recent years have been spent in the academic world lecturing and producing predominantly corporate media resources, the resultant stability allowing the time and opportunity to return to the written word.
In the current year, Macey has surrendered his lecturing role entirely, stepping away from academia to focus exclusively on his writing.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020I have my mainstay of authors, but I took a chance on Temple Legacy and I was pleasantly surprised. The woman characters were realistic and strong, in spite of their economic status and religious bent. I love novels, especially mysteries, that have an interest in history and archeology. The Templar Knights have always fascinated me. The characters were well drawn and the geographic location interesting. Their was no gratuitous violence, but realistic. I was afraid for the protagonist and the bad guys did scare me. The tension was graduated and pulled me along. There was only one contrivance, and I only allow for one. Authors should find realistic ways to solve the predicaments they create. D.C. Macey had a strong open, good middle, and an excellent ending. I have ordered the next book in the series and the price is right. Do give this series a shot.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2023#2 in this fun and informative series.
This one is for you if you like it when the protagonists must solve a puzzle, and you get to go along for the ride as they do so. Even better, one learns some fun history about medieval Europe and the Templars. The Mappa Mundi part was especially enjoyable.
The "Scroll" picks up where the "Legacy" left off. We revisit previous villains and some new ones emerge also. Sam and Helen progress, both in terms of answering the puzzle and in their own relationship.
Some clunky typographical errors again (mostly homonyms of the intended word, e.g., 'their' when 'there' was meant) and weird syntax (that 'lent' thing again). And, Helen still often speaks as though she is a Brit rather than an American. No American would throw "a spanner" into the works; for Americans, it is a "wrench."
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2022I didn't really read the synopsis of The Temple first two volumes and started worrying that I wasn't getting a good historical fiction book but a fiction one but outside my issue genre. Decided to go ahead and try to make a go of reading it. I would have made another big mistake if I didn't read it. Excellent fiction that had me waiting on the next problem to pop up for Helen and Sam. I'm looking forward to the next set of Temple books. If you enjoy surprise with a little suspense then start reading this series by D. C. Macy.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2018Good continuation of the story
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2018DC Macey turned out to be a refreshing surprise. I enjoyed the manner in which he writes. He uses unusual words, with unusual spellings, challenging the reader on every page. He uses interesting locations, I ended up in Wikipedia or in Google maps many times learning new historical facts. I will definitely read the next couple of books. I would definitely recommend this author to others.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2018An excellent read with the Templars portrayed in a historical manner instead of the hysterical hype normally found. The plot follows curves and twists as the characters unravel more information about the ring, keys, stones, and the scroll. The author weaves words into mind tapestries that can be seen mentally as he leads the reader thru the excitement and the mysteries. Well worth the time and reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2019Simply, I've yet to find a perfect book other than the one inspired by the Spirit of God. The Templars have been a fascinating topic for a long, long time. So many theories. So few facts. But always founded on truth, honor, and service. One wonders what, if anything, those men found in, or under, Solomon's stables. To grow from 9 poor knights to perhaps the most influential body in Europe and the Middle East is a curious thing. Well written. Keeps the readers involved. - Richard.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2018Well, Mr. Macey seems to have pedaled back on the excessive, unnecessary violence in the
first book in this series.
But only somewhat.
I was encouraged to read the second book by a reader who had seen my review
of the first book and asked me to review it.
In the Temple Scroll, there are "only" two or three descriptions of excessive,
unnecessary violence of the type that was rife in book one.
Granted, the story is clever and well plotted. However, is that enough for a reader?
I share with you a workaround to avoid Mr Macey's fascination with cruelty and sadism.
The minute I anticipated that the sadism was to begin, I rapidly page flipped through the
seeming endless description of cruelty and pain until I sensed it was over, and, if it truly
was, I continued from that point.
So again, I ask you, the reader, if you are willing to go through this ludicrous exercise
of flipping through a seeming holocaust of violence to continue in the book, or if there
are not books on Amazon that you would prefer to spend your time with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Absolutely loved this second instalment. I do enjoy all things Templars and the theory behind the story is credible and keeps you turning the pages. D C. Macey certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat by having many tributaries to the main story which keeps it alive and twists and turns from start to finish. Would love to see this in the big screen. Started the third book of you like the Templars, drama, mysteries and all out action then start by reading the first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars just fabulous
Very well written very entertaining and so interesting a delightful read. I liked the books about aliens and spaceships too. The books are so different in context all very interesting onto book 3 now.

4.0 out of 5 stars The goodies are so dim
It is a good religious thriller romp. Easier to read than Dan Bronwne novels, this book is quite a fun read. I liked the fact the goodies split up and fly all over Europe at the drop of a hat. I couldn't help picture in my head, like the Indiana Jones films, a little aeroplane with a trail of dots flying over a map. About every tenth page I think.
All the characters are back. No, seriously, all of them bar the dead.
My biggest problem was the plot holes. Firstly, our goodies would have to be in-bred village idiots not to be at least a bit wary about the killers tracking them and yet they endanger many, many people by casually dragging them into the fray. Despite being chased by murderous fiends on a couple of occasions, their alert level never seemed to go up. The result is more death, torture and carnage.
DCI Wallace seemed to press the suicide button at one point and I never did understand his rational for that action - seemed no way out.
Most of the plot surprises.....didn't. The glass, thread and crenelated 'feet' were obvious from the get go. The James Curry thread twist was obvious from the get go. The final big punch up between good and evil was entirely obvious.
The upside of this book was that the story developed a more Indiana Jones feel to it, with less stunt work. It was good fun. And who knew the Roman Catholic church had so many killers on the pay roll? Very importantly, it was a proper sequel and had a finish. So many kindle books are not complete stories.
On balance, I enjoyed reading it. Not sure about the third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars By now the well known characters are familiar and as the daggers and meaning of the Templar mysteries and intrigue fall into place with anxious and then happy moments, it was a pleasure to be transported ...
Another thrilling and exciting novel historically and geographically engaging from beginning to end; but thankfully it is not the end of the series and Book 3 is eagerly anticipated! By now the well known characters are familiar and as the daggers and meaning of the Templar mysteries and intrigue fall into place with many anxious moments, it was a pleasure to be transported from Edinburgh to Bristol, the Wye Valley and Herefordshire including the Cathedral and its treasures then onwards to Europe including Italian and Greek Islands. The attention to local detail everywhere was perfect and really engaging. Terrifying chases on water and on land showing D C Macey's nautical experience superbly; his knowledge of all things religious in different faiths and churches is impressive and inspiring! Danger and suspense throughout with cliff hangers aplenty but with more Templar secrets and mysteries waiting to be unravelled and evil and scheming men never far behind the good and honest heroes at the centre of the novels the next book will be welcomed soon for a good read this winter!
