The Unfamiliar & Other Stories Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

If you like dark fiction and crave chills in short, potent bursts, this one’s for you.

Tiny stories. Big terror.

Ten bite-sized tales of terror born from lockdown isolation — where the real horror begins behind closed doors.

In The Unfamiliar & Other Stories, fear takes many forms — strange telephone calls, creeping dread behind everyday routines, and the unsettling unknown lurking in our own homes. Inspired by the eerie stillness and quiet paranoia of the pandemic, these ten short and flash fiction tales explore the thin line between safety and danger, normal and unrecognisable.

From haunted houses to sinister encounters, from suffocating isolation to supernatural threats that thrive in silence — every story delivers a sharp jolt of unease.

Lock the doors. Silence your phone. And don’t trust the comfort of your own home.

What a wickedly surprising treat this collection was! I bought it on a whim and walked away more than satisfied when I finished. This is a brief collection, but the quality of the stories more than make up for the lack in quantity.

“Skull Crusher” was my favorite. This Halloween set tale was legitimately chilling.

The doppelgänger tale, “Them and Us,” was another creepy entry.

“Trouble with the Past” had a great twist, even if it wasn’t totally unexpected.

The titular story, “The Unfamiliar,” was another entertaining Halloween story, and “The House That Won’t Be Sold” and “The House That Stands Alone” were unique haunted house tales.

These are the highlights of an overall above average collection, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to more from Dixon.
