The Weight Of It All Kindle Edition
Reed Henske is a personal trainer who isn’t sure he’ll ever be ready to date again. He’s sick of guys who are only interested in the perfect body image, never seeing him for who he really is. As Reed tortures Henry with things like diet and exercise, Henry enamours Reed with recipes and laughter.
As the friendship lines start to blur, Henry is convinced there’s no way Thor-like Reed could ever be interested in a guy like him. Reed just has to convince Henry that life isn’t about reaching your ideal bodyweight. It’s about finding your perfect counterweight.

From the start they had such a great connection and the banter between them was so entertaining. Henry has been going through it and Reed is exactly what he needs to start seeing the silver lining to all the changes in his life. I liked a lot that Reed and their relationship was not a fix all for everything Henry was feeling and going through. Their relationship was healthy and they communicated relatively well. The low angst and cuteness factor for this book was exactly what I needed.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI could honestly feel Henry's heart breaking from the first page. The post-breakup surprise reminders everywhere you turn In the house, the feeling of not having been good enough. And then the added gut-punch: looking in the mirror, or getting a health eval (for instance, Henry's gym intake) and being faced with the reality that your body has somehow gotten away from you over the years. And THEN finally meeting someone wonderful, and not being able to shake the feeling this new person is going to come to their senses and realize that they are indeed not In your league and then choose to end things. "I'm unattractive and a nobody, the other shoe is going to drop any day now and this fairy tale will be over." I could physically feel his pain with every emotional blow or moment of year-round Henry experienced.
I read a couple of reviews that stated that this book was full of body shaming, both of obese and non-obese people. I read it as the exact opposite. Maybe it's because I have been in Henry's situation more than once-- minus the Thor-lookalike happily ever after-- and his depressing thoughts and negative perceptions of himself could have been written straight from my mind and heart during those darker periods. But I did not see anyone doing any fat shaming, other than the thoughts and comments he had about HIMSELF during low times. That wasn't the author writing dialogue glorifying fat shaming, that was the author capturing the mood of someone who is going through a period of low self-esteem. I like how the author made sure Henry talked about the other positives of his diet and exercise change, such as having more stamina for everyday activities without wearing out or getting winded easily. Also, toward the end of the book, Henry stated that he knows he will never have the perfect body, but he seems at peace with it. He shows more pride in the other benefits he's reaped from his diet and exercise changes, such as healthy cholesterol levels and blood glucose. It did also touch on other forms of body shaming, such as Reed being repeatedly written off as a dumb jock, or whatever the equivalent of a boy bimbo is, just because he is fit and gorgeous. The book shows how much it bothers him that he is nothing more than a pretty face or a perfect body to a lot of people and is not even given a chance to show them the other aspects of himself. I think, if a lot of folks stopped and thought, they'd realize that THEY had said something snarky or negative about someone who was extremely good looking, or wrote them off as only a pretty face with no substance. Because of stereotyping or grumpy-faced jealousy, the good-looking and/or fit person is subjected to meanness by those of us who are complaining about how WE imperfect "common folk" are treated based on our looks or shape. Very good perspective to point out.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved loved loved this story! It was absolute perfection. Reed and Henry are a new couple that I am completely obsessed with!
Henry’s ex boyfriend left him, leaving him feeling broken hearted and insecure about his body image. A man you spent 8 years with says he’s leaving you basically because you’re fat and stagnant. Like whoa!! Poor Henry!
Post breakup Henry is motivated to work on his weight. He joins a gym and the sexy hunk of a man, Reed becomes his personal trainer.
This thing between Henry and Reed became so much more than a trainer and his client. They slowly developed a friendship. It was absolutely adorable how innocent it all was. Sharing recipes and trips to the farmers market…uggh I loved it! 🤣🤣
Henry was hilarious! His sense of humor and his personality was everything! He kept a smile on not only Reed’s face but those around him as well. I loved how he treated Reed as more than what he saw on the surface.
Reed was so much more than good looks and a sexy body! He was super sweet, attentive, and motivating. He was exactly what Henry needed. Henry was insecure and hard on himself. I loved how Reed spoke life into Henry.
These two were polar opposites but totally meant to be. Henry thought that Reed was out of his league, but boy was he wrong! I was so giddy reading this book. I was rooting for the both of them! I loved seeing Henry’s journey to healing and getting his health on track. It was inspiring. It definitely had me reflecting on myself and my personal health goals.
I can’t express to you guys how much I loved this story! It was super low angst and super cute! The spice level was pretty low but the chemistry between these two made up for it. The storyline and characters were phenomenal. I will be rereading this over and over again. 5 stars across the board!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it - beautiful and heartfelt read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat an amazing read! The storyline was interesting and flowed well, the characters all brilliant, likeable and so very well developed, and there was the added bonus of some deeper self awareness and acceptance themes throughout as well. And to top it off, it was based in Australia - I loved that I knew the places the characters went so could really visualise it!
Henry - what can I say except that he is amazing! His verbal diarrhea made for many hillarious moments - I couldn't help but laugh! The reactions of other characters in these situations was perfect as well. He is such an beautiful soul, but with very little self confidence - which wasn't helped by his douche of an ex. While the book was told completely from his perspective, we also got a really good feel for Reed, as well as their friends Anika, Sean, Melinda and Emily. Reed was another diamond in the rough - I loved his connection with Henry and how they got along so well from the start. Despite the differences in their current physical appearances and career paths, they had a lot in common and the conversation between them was always easy and seemingly endless. When Reed revealed his secret to Henry, it made a lot of his earlier reactions and comments make sense, but it never altered how he felt for Henry or vice versa.
I loved Henry's journey of self discovery. It wasn't about Reed, or even his weight loss, it was about his self discovery and acceptance - learning to love himself for who he was, regardless of what his exterior looked like.
The ending was well written, and very satisfying. While I would love more of these two, seeing them several years down the track perhaps, I was really happy with how it wrapped up.
An easy one to review and rate 5 stars, and definitely a book I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read!
Format: KindleVerified Purchase5 stars!
"Let me be clear about something. My contentment did not come from weight loss. It came from accepting myself, and that was something Reed had taught me to differentiate."
Words can't do this book justice. Hands down, I related to this book more than any other book I've read to date. You want to know why? I've been on the receiving end of jokes. I've been bullied when I was younger. I've been made insecure about how I look from people closest to me. It might not have been my other half - which I don't have - but it might as well been have because it might have been less painful.
Henry is the FUNNIEST guy I've read/imagined about. Like another book I read a while back, if this story sucked, I would have given it 5 stars just because of him and Reed.
{Henry} joins a gym and meets Reed there and they become fast friends. The two have more in common than they realize. I honestly loved the way the two interacted. I LOL'd so many times, I had tears coming out. And Henry at the gym was the funniest s*** ever.
"Then holy s***, the treadmill beeped and started to tilt. The platform rose up, and sweet mother of God, I was going to die."
Their story was real. It's about accepting yourself and loving yourself above all. N.R. Walker does a fantastic job balancing out the serious from the funny and emotional. I thought the story were well thought out and the main & secondary characters were fantastically developed.
If you have never read a MM before I cannot recommend this story enough to start with. If you're already familiar with the genre; go read this book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOkay so that was an amazing book. The story is really good. Henry and Reed work really well together. And the way N.R. Walker talks about perception, judgement based on looks is so realistic, and real. Not just about how overweight people are misjudged or treated by society, but how gorgeous and beautiful people are too, in a different way : objectified, and so often seen as an empty shell just good to be looked at but not worth being cracked open...
So yeah, a very good read, with two real characters with their insecurities and their fear of not being seen for who they really are, or worse, of being judged and disliked for it. But then, this story also is about finding support in each other and self acceptance.
So yeah, definitely a Must read !

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReading this made me laugh. It felt good to read about the hero who is so many things and being overweight is just one of them. Love it
