About the author

Canadian author, Sharon Purtill was a stay at home mom and entrepreneur when she stumbled into publishing in 1998. That year, along with her husband, she wrote and published her first book. That book’s success took them both by surprise when it went on to sell tens of thousands of copies right out of their garage. Today, Sharon is an award winning author who publishes in multiple genres under a couple of different pseudonyms. Her passion for writing, family and a positive life motivates her to create books that she hopes will enrich the lives of others. She hopes to one day escape the cold, and write from a tropical beach somewhere where her biggest concerns will be sand sticking to her suntan lotion and an empty margarita glass. But, for now, Sharon treasures the warm summer months and the time she gets to spend with family and friends in Ontario, Canada.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024My 3, now 4 year old daughter became very anxious when it thunderstormed. Where we live it tends to thunderstorm at night, during her bedtime. Sally Storm has been a great way to talk about the storm in a way that her little.mind can understand. We often say, "oh, it's just Sally Storm having fun!" My daughter can recite parts of the book now. I highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024Our 2 1/2 year old was TERRIFIED of thunder. This book completely changed that! After one read, she was going “I love thunder, thunder is cool!” I couldn’t believe it. I mean, before this book, she was inconsolable when it came to thunderstorms. Now she’s looking forward to the next one! Our 6 year old also enjoyed the book and found the explanation of thunderstorms interesting. Definitely recommend this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025This is a book trying to explain thunder to children who are afraid of it. Whether or not it accomplishes that would depend upon the child. I can see it might help some - but not all - children. I'm not sure younger children would be swayed by scientific facts. When our children were very young, I told them that thunder was God playing the drums. I knew they didn't care about electricity: they cared about the noise. If they knew anything about electricity, it would have only been that when you flipped a switch, the light came on. However, there was no sound involved and certainly not the booming or rumbling sounds of thunder.
I know some people would argue that I was lying to my children about what thunder is, but I imagine at least some of those folks told their children about Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. All I can tell you is that none of my children were afraid of thunder. Of course part of that was me. I have ALWAYS loved thunder - the louder the better. It actually calms me. Seeing ME calm in the wake of a thunderstorm probably SHOWED them that thunder didn't have to be scary. Showing something to someone is more impactful than just telling them. Even so I have no doubt that thunder IS from God drums or no drums. That fact is never mentioned in scientific answers so He is completely absent in those explanations.
Bottom line: this may or may not help your child depending on age and the nature of the child. It won't help (nor will anything else) if YOU are terrified of thunder. First you need to calm yourself; and if this book helps YOU, it is a first step.
I have to say the illustrations worked well with the explanation. They are well done, and younger children are especially keen on the illustrations: they may have more of an impact than science on younger children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative!
As a mom of a three and four year old, I wanted a book that we could read about storms and thunders in an age appropriate way that did not cause more fear around storms. This book definitely delivers!
Informative not only on how clouds, rain and storms form but why storms are beneficial to our environment. It is done so through engaging, rhyming and age appropriate text.
We really enjoyed the illustrations as well. Whimsical, fun, and with diverse characters. I really appreciated how the 'stormy' pages were muted dark tones, and always had a muted bright tone to it. Which I find really helps to keep a calm and non-threatening tone to those pages. While having very bright pictures for sunny days.
Definitely recommend not only for children who may feel anxious with storms, but for little curious minds in general!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Book
My Grandson really enjoyed this book. Now, when there’s a thunderstorm and he’s feeling nervous he will know that it’s Sally Storm making those loud thunder claps. What a great idea to put a friendly face to something that may be scary for some children. It teaches how thunderstorms form and the importance of rain for our environment.
The rhyming narrative was easy to read and the illustrations were bright and colourful. I love how the book includes fun facts and questions that will spark conversations with kids.
I highly recommend this book to be in every child’s home library.
