About the author
Mark Restaino is a full time youth minister and lives in the Chicagoland area with his wife and two daughters.
He got the idea for his first story while on a retreat with his youth group students. His other stories also seem to come to him in the quiet moments as he reflects on his life and relationship with Christ.
He is personally drawn to the symbolism and foreshadowing that God weaves throughout the Bible and believes they serve as beautiful defenses in apologetics.
In reflection of his creator, he strives to write stories that capture readers' hearts and minds while symbolically sharing the faith and gospel message.
He prays that his stories kindle the fire of the Holy Spirit within you, your family, and your church community.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021The book description includes: "An inspirational reminder to shop local." But this book is much more than that, so I hope you read the entire description! To me, I see the importance of community and positive relationship woven within a lovely story of a girl growing up and choosing to stay within her community. The illustrations are fantastic. And the words have a bit of rhythm and rhyme, but not in a rigid (or cheesy) way that many children's books do. There is also a bit of word play, which I enjoyed. I love when a simple book can showcase big ideas and prompt discussions. Here are some ideas if you are looking for a meaningful discussion with your kids!
What are some of the things the girl does as she grows up? Would you like to do any of those things?
Describe the town where she lives.
What are some similarities between her town and where you live? What are some differences?
Do you know any shop owners, librarians, or other community workers?
How might you get to know someone new?
How many moments can you find in the book that show kindness?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2021This is a wonderful story for children of all ages that teaches them the value of building relationships in your community and helping each other out. I like how it followed the main character growing up and going through stages and milestones which makes it very relatable and heartfelt. This is the perfect time for this book to come out to stress the importance of shopping local, helping your community and bonding with your family. Very cute illustrations and rhyming format. Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2021This book shows several things parents and children can do or explore to learn about their town. I especially liked that it encouraged us to shop local.
Most any age child will enjoy this story. It's short and to the point... perfect to read to a toddler and the illustrations were adorable. Older kids will enjoy reading it and since it is short they won't be intimidated like they might be with a longer book.
As a parent/grandparent I liked the way it focused on town pride and the ease of using some of the pages for suggestions for field trips.
I was given a copy of this book from the author as well as purchasing a copy. The views written here are my honest opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021What a sweet story. The flow of the wording and story was nice and slow, allowing us to enjoy the illustrations and not feel rushed or overloaded. I like that the illustrations were not cluttered or overbearing. They were soft and clean. The variety of professions showed is great for our 3yo and 5yo. Our kids don't understand small town life yet, but this is a nice little peek for them into that kind of world!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2021This is such a delightful book. The main character, a delightful little girl, takes the reader on a tour of her town highlighting the various small businesses around town. The illustrator gradually ages the little girl as the story progresses ending with her adult self by the end of the book.
I love the hidden messages of faith, compassion, thoughtfulness for others among other themes in the book.
I highly recommend this book for children of all ages.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021This sweet book with bright and clean illustrations made me tear up a bit when I realized that the main character was growing up and making her own memories alongside the "town." The illustrations tell the story, but the words are fitting. The overall message is simple and effective, that the good things in life are as ordinary as they are lovely. Full of hopeful images that children will either relate to or be edified by.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021This sweet picture book shows a red-headed girl growing up in her small town, being mentored by people in her community. When she is grown, she starts her own business in the community. The message is to shop local and support your local community. The illustrations by Doblenudo help the story come to life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021Wonderful little story about a small town and how the great importance of shopping local and the sweetness of it. The illustrations show such sweetness as well. I would love to read this to my class of 1st graders.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shop local in your town
I like the theme of a town consisting of memorable stores and staff, plus the need to shop local to support them. That is something good that has come out of this pandemic time. I think an elementary school aged child will enjoy this most. Hopefully a reader who lives in a large city can think about stores in the area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This Town is a children's book with lovely and engaging illustrations.
The story starts with a young girl and throughout the tale she grows into a woman with a family of her own. The illustrations tell just as much of a story as the writing does and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book.
To me it felt like it included a message of kindness and goodness, and I think especially in recent times that is always a good thing to be reminded of, for both children and adults.
