Thrown (The Art of Love Book 1) Kindle Edition
Ceramic artist Robbie Hawthorne is dedicated not only to his art, but to keeping the arts center and school housed at his family’s ancestral estate vibrant and flourishing. But when the family runs into financial trouble and a heartless corporation offers to buy the estate to turn it into an amusement park, Robbie has to get creative to try to stop them.
That includes working together with a man he has nothing in common with and who instantly irritates him…
Toby Tillman has fought to overcome his working-class roots and to make a name for himself in the financial world. Now he finds himself pitted against his old mentor in the quest to save the Hawthorne House Arts Center, which is run by exactly the kind of entitled nobs he’s always hated. Worse still, he finds himself constantly hot for Robbie, a man he should utterly despise.
And then comes the road trip and a stay at a hotel with only one bed…
Can two men from opposite sides of the tracks find enough common ground to rescue a family’s heritage? And can enemies end up becoming each other’s salvation?
Thrown is an enemies-to-lovers gay romance that includes one tight-knit family and one family disaster, a Renaissance faire, a reality competition, a road trip, only one bed, constantly being mistaken for boyfriends, an unlikely rescue in a moment of humiliation, a familiar scene involving a pottery wheel, and a few things that would get this blurb flagged for naughtiness if I included them in the description. Oh! And a cameo by The Brotherhood!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024First, I appreciate Merry Farmer's work. This story doesn't disappoint. The lives of Toby and Robbie are wonderfully crafted with love, humor, and insight. Two worlds are far a part at all.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2024A great start to a new series, it's a slow burn, with great characters, and a fun storyline I can't wait to see what comes next out of this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2024There's a passage in this book, that without being a spoiler saying this, where the characters admit they are engaging in a scene worthy of Hollywood. And that describes this book from Merry Farmer that's one in a series of characters who revolve around, and mostly live, in this old English manor converted into an arts school.
There might be some false nobility when the opening notes that they have been offered a huge sum to sell the place, but that they wish to continue serving their community with the art school and educating others about the prime of the manor.
In essence, that's the theme—that this special place needs to be preserved for what it was, for what it is, and for what it can be in the future. A huge corporation with lotsa money to change it into a theme park, a sleazy banker type intent on a large commission, and a lip ring wearing son of a criminal who is holding together his family on his income having been given a leg up to work in the financial world.
But even he, Toby, sees the ill-will nature of the banker type, and having been engaged to help find other income for the manor, finds love and acceptance in this very open family, mainly in the form of Robbie, whose talent in ceramics is showcased as a judge in a televised competition.
This well-written book captures that movie-like experience. Including a tribute to the movie "Ghost" with the love interests together throwing a pot on the potter's wheel. Adding to this are the members of a secret society whose contribution to saving the day is unforeseen.
These characters are imprinted in me now, and I'll be seeking out the second book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2024This was a slow burn for sure... we were teased with more or the idea of more... loved the story build up. Hated Duckie and despised Keith. Both Robbie and Toby deserved so much more than life had given them, especially Toby. Both were lucky to be excepted by their families as they are, now they just had to accept they were worthy themselves.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2024Thrown by Merry Farmer introduces readers to Hawthorne House and the extended family that has owned and worked its land for centuries. Robbie, a potter and teacher, is full of self-doubt. Toby fights against his own self-doubt, but with bravado and snarls where Robbie freezes and folds in on himself. Amidst their own tension is the bigger stress of why Toby has been hired by the Hawthornes: the estate is in declining financial states. The whole story reads like a caper and a rom-com movie plot, but it’s fast paced and fun, and it’s obvious Farmer and the characters know exactly how much they’re lovingly playing with the genre. Painted comes next in the series and I’m looking forward to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024What a great enemies to lovers, opposites attract mm romance. I think what I liked most about this book was that when they were able to let down their guard and let one another in, their vulnerability was really sweet and endearing. They brought out the best in each other, Toby helped Robbie build up his self-esteem, and Robbie saw Toby for what he was, a hard working man with great ideas and just needed a break in life.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024Enjoyed this new one from Merry Farmer! It was compelling and fun with a slow burn story arc that was just lovely! Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2024This is a cute story. The sexy factor is low and slow. The overall story arc is okay and does incorporate the brotherhood at one point in the story. This isn’t my favorite Merry Farmer but it seems like I either enjoy the books or not so much. As a result I’ll give the next book a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun English family drama with lots of romance
An entertaining read about a close aristocratic family who stand to lose their family estate unless they make changes and find solurions. They are up against a company that wants to pay them millions in order to build an amusement park on the site.
The father hires a company to give them ideas and solutions of how they can improve their current business and avoid selling.
It is a fun, read with good and bad characters, and kept me turning the pages to see the mcs get their act together during all the goings on.
I really enjoyed it.
