From the Inside Flap

With a roar to rend the universe, the fabric of time warped and fractured. In shock, they huddled together in the darkness. Trembling, Jessie whispered, "What's outside that door, Alex? Your world or mine? Or something else altogether? Something ... terrible?"He wrapped his arms around her, held her tightly, shook his head. "I don't know."Jessie shivered, murmured against his chest, "I'm afraid. I'm so afraid.""I know," he nodded. "I am, too."

I normally don’t go for the time travel kind of books, but the blurb for this one intrigued me. I’m very glad I took a chance on this read!

Synopsis (from the author): The accidental death of his beloved wife sent Alex Morgan into grief and rage, eased only by a profound bond with his son. Suddenly his life is shattered again when a chance discovery propels him into a world gone horribly, terrifyingly wrong.
Piecing together clues in this new nightmare, Alex suspects a colleague of taking a few, meddling steps back in time, changing the course of history - destroying Alex's family and his world. Desperately clinging to his sanity, he searches for any evidence his young son still exists.
Jessica O'Neil is fighting a nightmare of her own, captured and facing execution for freedom-fighting heroics in her grim, oppressive world. When Alex rescues the feisty young rebel, she resists her dangerous attraction to him - a man who's clearly crazy, literally in a world of his own.

Bound together first by chance and desperation, then by growing purpose, respect, and emotion, Alex and Jessie must depend on each other to survive. More than that, they must find a way to prevent a terrible crime from taking place - a crime that plunged both their worlds into nightmare - over a hundred years before. To have a future, they will have to find their way to the past!

What I liked: The book opens with a tragedy for Alex, who loses his wife in an accident and has to raise his son alone. I immediately connected with Alex as he copes with the tragedy and the joy of his son. The transfer to a new oppressive world was handled in a believable way (and the gadget was cool). Jessie, the rebel In the Alex’s new world, was started as a stereotype, but blossomed into a well-rounded character. I also liked the interesting twist on history and how a single event could dramatically change the world.

What I didn’t like: As I mentioned above, Jessie started out as a stereotype character and that was initially an issue for me (but it got better). Other than that, not much about this book I didn’t like!

Overall impression: The Timelapse concept was amazing. To have a history professor transported into an alternate history was brilliant, and the overall story captured and held my attention. The characters turned into people you wanted to win, and the ending was very well done. I would recommend this one to readers who like alternative history, romance, and some action!

this was a fast paced book. I like books on time travel that is why I picked it. L Farrelly put a different spin on things that I enjoyed, No, I won't put a spoiler in here. it is a short book I finished in a day or two at the most. It does grab you and pull you with a good plot and plenty of suspense so enjoy!

Alex is a real hero. He can ride a fast motorbike and gallop a horse, he can fight and has Storm Trooper presence. He shrugs off gun fire like a boss and loves his son with a passion. He has enough of a touch of tragedy for us all to flutter our eyelashes but we wouldn’t dare feel sorry for him. He’s like an Indiana Jones who can time leap and I suspect there’s more of this series to come.
Jessie is gorgeous. She’s no shrinking violet, she’d shoot you without a second thought, but she’s damaged, and innocent and living in a world produced by the whims of a selfish man. When Jessie and Alex’s worlds collide, it spells nothing but trouble.
I love Lorrie Farrelly’s work so it was no hardship to step into Timelapse, even though it was a step outside the realm of Dangerous. It’s cleverly written and moves at a fast pace. The way the characters are carried across realms is insightful and an awesome touch to keep the continuity of the storyline. I never knew what would happen next and the story is filled with suspense and action.
A really neat feature is the way history is woven seamlessly into the plot so that things for which there was no explanation previously, leave you scratching your head in the light of this novel. It’s very cleverly written, as always. Can definitely recommend.

I just happened upon this book while browsing. I love a paranormal twist but lately, all I've found are vampires, werewolves and zombies--not my cup of tea. Time-travel and alternate universe is, and this fits the bill nicely. In a way, this reminded me of Back to the Future, the second and third movies moreso than the first.

It starts with Alex zapped into an alternate universe when he finds a device left by the previous occupant of his office and accidentally triggers it. The world he finds himself in is scary and reminded me of the Soviet Union, only worse. The author does a good job of creating this alternate reality, and how even the technology has lagged because of the changes.

I also found the main character, Alex, very likable and someone I could easily root for. I wasn't quite as fond of his newfound love, Jessie, partly because she seemed a bit too young for him, but as a character, she was good.

The writing style was smooth, flowed well, and I had no trouble picturing everything happening. The action sequences were especially good. I found no typos or formatting issues either.

I will be taking a look at a few other books I noticed by this author, and will most likely buy them.

I love reading time travel books and have read my share. This one was of a genre that I had never read before. I am a guy who has avoided romance novels like the plague. Imagine my surprise when this one turned all mushy. To my pleasant surprise I really enjoyed it. I would definitely read another time travel or sci-fi book by Lorrie Farrelly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best kind of hero
Reviewed in Australia on May 27, 2014

The concept for this one had me fascinated from the beginning. Throw a history professor with a tragic past into a timeline with an alternate history to his own time - and watch him not only come to terms with it but try to change the world.

I loved that Alex wasn't an irritating, macho hero who couldn't be bested - for Jessie decked him more than once. Yet he's a single dad who lost his wife in a tragic accident. The first thing I expected him to do was try to change the events in his past so that he could be reunited with his wife in a perfect reality, yet Ms Farrelly gave us a completely different story that I couldn't have predicted. That made this book far more real to me - because the hero wasn't a selfish bastard who only cared about his own pain. From the outset, he comes across as a real-life, thrown into circumstances that he'll make the best of, type of hero.

My only complaint is that the world Alex found himself in isn't described in detail outside of the America he travels through. There's a brief mention of Britain and Europe, but that's all. I know it's not entirely necessary to the story...but I admit I'd have liked to see it.

A brilliant alternate history time-travel tale, showing love spans all times and all realities, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!

I can think of absolutely no reason for anyone to be able to give this novel anything other than 5 stars! From the first page the story captivated me and held my interest until the final page.

This is a love story, a very human story, as well as being a sci-fi about time travel. But it was the human interest side which gripped me most.

The main character Alex is totally lovable. He is very real as he grieves for his dead wife, retaining the will to live only for the sake of their young son, Jack.

When Alex accidently finds a time travel device, which is very much like a mobile phone and I could quite imagine these things becoming a reality, he travels to a world which is unrecognisable from his own.

Alex has travelled to an America which is run like something out of 1984 by George Orwell. Citizens live under a strict regime and fear for their lives. Here Alex meets Jessie who is one of the brave fighting for their right to freedom. Of course they fall in love and by a sheer fluke they travel back in time to the attempted assassination of a previous American president. Alex is able to thwart the attempt which was organised by the owner of the time travel device who had sought to create a utopia.

Instead, when he learns of the world he created for the likes of people like Jessie, he gives up his device and Jessie and Alex are able to travel back to the present together.

I don't wish this review to do an injustice to this story. It is not just a love story but so much more. There is plenty of action and danger for Alex and Jessie but the author does not try to bombard the reader with complex explanations behind the theory of time travel.

You have to read this book! I will certainly be exploring more books by this very talented writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hugely enjoyable read!

I stumbled across this book on Goodreads and it had some very good reviews, so I thought I'd give it a go. I wasn't convinced from reading the summary that I was going to enjoy the story, and after the first few pages I still wasn't sure, but I persevered. Then the characters and the story really came alive for me and I found I didn't want to put the book down. It turned out to be a really good, fast paced action adventure story with a bit of time travel thrown in, and lots of romance! The alternative timeline much of the action was set in was scary and thought provoking in equal measures, and I loved the historical twist around the attempted assassination of President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902.

It wasn't one of those books that leaves you completely stunned and thinking about the characters for days after you've finished it (those are the only ones I would give five stars to), but it was very well written and hugely enjoyable. I would like to read more from Lorrie Farrelly.

5.0 out of 5 stars This could be how the Hunger Games actually happens
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2015
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
Let me start by saying this is another one of those book I count among the best I’ve ever read. I feel so lucky to have read two back to back.
When I started reading this I didn’t know what to expect. The blurb talks about someone going back in time to ruin the main character’s life, and I expected a sinister evil person to appear at the beginning of the book. This doesn’t happen and you are kept wondering who this person is until the last part of the book. And even then there is a hell of a twist.
What does happen, however, is you are catapulted into an alternate reality. Something has happened in the past to change your own world, and you are the only person who remembers the way it should be.
This author does a brilliant job of developing an alternative history, and I can’t help but think this could be how the Hunger Games actually happens. The whole book feels so...real, and terrifying in its possibilities.
Along the way the love story between the two main characters develops. Ok, it happens fast, but it just feels right.
Oh, and the end of the book brought tears to my eyes. The characters are real. You will love them, and there are moments you heart will drop to your stomach.
An absolutely brilliant book. Loved it.

Alex is a young college professor in Washington DC, who has closed himself off from the world after a personal tragedy. Suddenly he finds himself transported to an alternative 2010, where the U.S.A. has become a repressive dictatorship policed by brutal storm troopers. Alex rescues a young woman rebel – Jessie – from their clutches. He discovers a reason to live again, through his growing attraction to Jessie. But then he finds a cause worth dying for. It seems an assassin’s bullet in 1902 set America on the path to oppression. Can Alex leap backwards through time – as he leaped sideways – and prevent the assassination ever happening, change history and save his country? He decides to risk it, and then Jessie decides to come along… Lorrie Farrelly creates vulnerable and damaged but still likable characters you can care about, and plunges them into one perilous adventure after another. An ingenious plot fuels a gripping, fast-paced tale, dystopian sci-fi that also manages to reflect our own troubled times.
