About the Author
Born in Wallasey, Merseyside in November 1960, Ian has been married to Simone since 1982. They have one son, Stuart, who arrived as a bit of a surprise in 1993. They have lived near Dorset's Jurassic Coast since 1985. Ian has enjoyed a lifelong passion for aviation, especially airliners. A keen plane spotter, he fulfilled his childhood ambition by joining the UK Civil Aviation Authority in July 1980 as an Air Traffic Control Assistant. He was involved in training, line management, and was a Flight Planning specialist. Prior to early retirement in 2014, his day (and night) job was as a Flight Information Service Officer, one of a close-knit team providing the on-demand 'London Information' service to aircraft flying outside the UK airways system. He also trained as a Critical Incident Stress Management Defuser. After a 30 year on / off research project about the life and times of his remarkable Grandmother Hilda James, Ian finally began writing in earnest during late 2011. The resulting book, Lost Olympics, was the long-awaited family history. Along the way he learned that Hilda was even more of a character than the determined old lady he had known as a child. He unearthed some dark and sometimes controversial family secrets that needed to be aired as part of the narrative. Since early 2015 Ian has been one of the English Administrators at 10 Minute Novelists, an increasingly respected and busy US-based international Facebook community for writers at all levels of experience and aspirations. Ian has always been an avid science fiction reader, preferring the so-called 'hard sci-fi' genre of books based in possible science, over those dealing in pure fantasy. to Visit Earth is based on an original idea which had been kicking around in his head for twenty years.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2018Now I must say that I have fully enjoyed reading this book. At times it even made the old eyes water :-) I very much hope that we will be seeing book two shortly.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2019Asked for books to read, and I received “To Visit Earth” as a suggestion. If you like hard science, this is for you. Well, except for the point when the engineer whips out a slide rule as a “comfort tool” to fix a complex problem. Really! In the 22nd century? Yanked me right out of the story, and I liked using a slide rule in school. By then, I was invested in the outcome. The story, otherwise, is excellent. The writing is not its equal, and this is where hard science eats into the human drama and story flow a bit. Also, the one antagonist is a bit cartoonish for my taste, but his fate was both satisfying but felt a bit of deus ex machina with who had to deal with the antagonist in the end.
On the upside, and it’s a big one, is the enduring friendship of Evan and Lucy as she grows as a person in her desperate situation with her new found friends. Her new friends were hard to imagine, but I found them an endearing part of the story. Another nice aspect to the story is that that the author kept shifting the sands underneath our expectations. I believe this story is a solid read for sci-fi buffs. It’s not a five in my book, but it’s certainly an upscale four.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2018I thoroughly enjoyed this science fiction book. The characters were strong and interesting, the plot was excellent, and there was a great balance between the hard science and the readability. I am definitely looking forward to more books from Ian McAllister!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2018When authors spin The What if Wheel and the readers are transported to the probable future; that’s what I love, and To Visit Earth does just that. No spoilers. It’s a solid story through and through.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018I loved the relationship between Lucy & Evan; it was handled beautifully. Without giving anything away, the "dreams and daydreams" passage remains my favorite bit in this novel. Such a haunting bit of writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric! A most enjoyable read.
Great dialogue, believable characters and though I'm not sure the writer intended it, likeable aliens! I found myself spending time on their communication methods so I could get to know each one as Lucy did. I really liked this book. Recmmened.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a read
This was a well written book with 3D characters and an interesting plot. I would be interested in any follow up. I would have given this 4 1/2 stars if I could (I rarely give 5).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!
"To Visit Earth" is the first Sci-Fi novel from Ian Hugh McAllister, but not his first published book. He is an experienced speaker, and tells a good story! This book used a considerable depth of knowledge skillfully incorporated into a future world, to make a completely plausible story which had me gripped from early on. I wondered throughout where this would go, or how many sequels could be written, yet I wasn't disappointed at the end. Could be an epic movie!
