Totally Folked: A Small Town Romantic Comedy (Good Folk Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3,559 ratings

One unforgettable night leads to an unlikely shared connection, and unlikely connections never go unnoticed by the good folks in Green Valley, Tennessee. . .

Jackson James follows the rules. He has to. He’s a sheriff’s deputy in a super small town with a super big personality. However, strict adherence to the law during the day has been enjoyably balanced by rakish rules at night. Jackson, typically happy to protect and serve (and serve, and serve), starts questioning the value of wayward evenings when getting laid starts to feel more like being waylaid. Could it be that Green Valley’s most eligible—and notorious—bachelor longs for something (and someone) real?

Mega movie star Raquel Ezra follows only one rule: always leave them wanting more. Studio execs, reporters, audiences, fans, lovers—no one can get enough of the smart, savvy, and sexy bombshell. But when “generous offers” begin to feel more like excessive demands, years of always leaving has the elusive starlet longing for something (and perhaps someone) lasting.

When Raquel abruptly returns to the quirky Tennessee hamlet, her path crosses with the delectable deputy with whom she spent one unforgettable night. Unfortunately, scandal and intrigue soon follow. Raquel and Jackson must decide which is more important: following their rules? Or, at long last, finding something real.

‘Totally Folked’ is the first book in the Good Folk series and is a full-length, small town, contemporary romantic comedy novel.

Jackson has been redeemed!
4 out of 5 stars
Jackson has been redeemed!
4.5 Stars One of my favorites litmus tests of authors is if they are able to redeem characters from earlier in a series and make readers fall in love with them. Penny Reid has absolutely passed this test with flying colors. I knew there was an inkling of how my feelings were going to change when Jackson James was written into Been There Done That by Hope Ellis. We really got to see a different side of Jackson. “I suppose Raquel was an idea. A memory is made too much out of, remembered too often, relived until the edges had grown worn and soft and frayed.” It was so rewarding to see his finally get his HEA. We really get to find out the reason that he is the way he is, and all his discipline to change the community’s expectations and their opinions of who he is. Rae is just hilarious, she’s awkward and so relatable. But she absolutely so lonely, and has filled her life with people who are not out for her best interest. I love how Jackson wants a complete partnership with her, as equals. Icing on the cake, checking in on all our favorite Green Valley characters and their families. *chef’s kiss*

Small town, slow burn goodness with a hero whose self-doubt made my chest ache; this is quite the series starter. I went into this with an interesting perspective - I've read a few of Reid's books, but it's been 3 years since the last time and I certainly don't know all of the inner workings of this small town. I know many readers hated the hero, Jackson, before they even dived into Totally Folked, but he's just a reformed playboy to me - and a very, very compelling one at that. The prequel novella, Just Folking Around, certainly left me with quite the first impression. Jackson is steady and sexy, confident some moments and breathtakingly vulnerable in others. Jackson's playboy past has shaped him into the man he is today, and his desire to love and be loved was one of the best parts of this book.

Note: this love story begins in the prequel novella, and that is absolutely essential for your enjoyment of Totally Folked. The story would feel exceedingly slow-paced if you haven't experienced Raquel and Jackson together first. My ebook copy included the novella at the start, but the audio version does not. Be sure you read that first.

The story follows Raquel, a bombshell of an actress who is tired of faking it. She loves acting, but everything else that goes along with it is beginning to feel tiresome. Not only does she fake it for the cameras, but she's also been faking a relationship for the last several years. So when she returns to the small town that made a lasting impression 5 years ago, it's a breath of fresh air... and she's secretly hoping that she'll run into the man who made her last visit so memorable. Jackson and Raquel have the kind of chemistry that could light a match, but he isn't the same guy that she left behind - and he doesn't seem overly enthusiastic about her return.

This is a series starter that WILL stand on its own, but there are a LOT of appearances from past couples and characters. I'm only vaguely familiar with the series that this spins-off from, and I had no trouble keeping up. But if I have one complaint about the book, it's that there could've been more focus on our couple instead of the town itself. Longtime fans are sure to appreciate the many characters who make this a richer, fuller experience, but anyone starting out is just going to want more Raquel and Jackson. Because they were fantastic together. Their banter and chemistry had me hooked from their first interaction in the novella, and that spark of attraction is what allows this slow burn romance to truly simmer. It's a slow, laidback pace that's heartfelt and a little emotional, pairing moments of humor with some quiet depth as well. I loved Jackson's backstory and he is an absolute gentleman in present day - easily one of my favorite parts of the story. His heartache and yearning had me turning the pages, and Raquel and Jackson's happy ending felt deep and real by the end... even if more time could've been spent with them instead of the townsfolk. But maybe I'm just being greedy - this was definitely good.

Audio note: I liked it! The audio was enjoyable and perfect for an easygoing listen. Both narrators did a great job, and I particularly liked the subtle accent of the male narrator. They enrich the small town feel and their voices were soothing and almost calming for me. It's dual narration and the perspectives shift from chapter to chapter, so we get plenty of both voices throughout. The slow burn of the story lends itself well to a workday listen (very little NSFW content until later on), though the length is a bit cumbersome. At over eleven hours, it took me two days to get through the whole book, AND I had to read through my ebook of the novella before starting - because I wasn't about to use another credit on a 60ish page introduction. Certainly worth a listen, just be aware of the novella element before diving in.

If you are new to the Penny Reid kingdom of novels, you can totally read this book, as-is, with no other background. HOWEVER, personally I would at least recommend reading the Winston Brothers series, if not starting at the true beginning with the Knitting In The City series. (It is not necessary, but it enhances the whole story line and at the same time will make you appreciate the brilliance of Penny Reid's writing.)

I love Jackson James. I wasn't sure of him when we first met him back in the KITC series, however he has grown on me and dug himself a spot in my heart. He is patient and kind, protective and a true gentleman. And apparently gorgeous and has a great tongue (*wink, wink*).

Raquel Ezra is a Hollywood star. An A list actress, that is tired of acting even in her personal life. Looking for a place where she can just "be" she heads to Green Valley TN where she knows her friend Suenna has been able to do just that.

After a brief interlude over five years prior, Jackson and Raquel (aka Rae) meet again and what ensues is a well planned out relationship. The catch here is what happens when emotions invade the plan and it evolves into a romance.

I hate giving away plotlines so just sit down and enjoy this one. Jackson and Rae have a great story. You won't regret immersing yourself in their world.

I've put off reading this book. I didn't want to start yet! I finally gave in, and now I have the exact feelings I knew I would. I need more, and the series isn't done yet. I did the same with the Winston brothers. I didn't know that I would fall so in live with that family when I started. Duane was my first taste of Penny and her brilliance. I had to stop and start at the beginning of the knitting series. I was so blessed to have all these people to read about and love. So relatable. So real. Penny, your writing is phenomenal. So when the Winston brothers ended, I was heartbroken. I adore Cletus and Jens books, and I still want more of them. They are my favorite couple. I wanted more of Green Valley and its people. I wasn't ready to give up my connection to this world of characters. Then, you announced Jackson's story. I was so freaking excited! Unfortunately, I was also stressed because I have a patience problem. I don't like to wait for more books. I want it all, and I want it to keep coming. And so I waited until I couldn't anymore. I gave in, and now I am obsessed. I want more. I'm ready for every single character to get their own story. I know that's greedy and unrealistic but doesn't change my wants.

Jackson James. I, too, agree that this is a fantastic name! Even when I first read it, I truly appreciated it. Now, when I first read his character, I didn't much like him, but by the end of the Winston series, I was ready for him to find his partner. I am so unbelievably excited that Cletus is his friend. That is probably one of the very best things in this book to me! I already loved Raquel. Their intro story had me in love. This book, like so many of Penny's books, gave me real emotional reactions. I judge a book based on its ability to 1. Pull me in and 2. Elicit a genuine emotional reaction I can't contain with no physical response. This book did both. I laughed out loud. I cried tears. Sobbed at one point. I was so pulled in I felt emotions right along next to the characters. Penny Reid, you are a master and I am honored that I have the privilege to read your work! I will have a book hangover, and I will absolutely be reading the next book for more of your amazing artistry!

Raquel and Jackson are really lovely, and if you've read their novella prequel.. well you know they have amazing chemistry and definitely will want to read what happens when they see each other again... ALMOST SIX YEARS LATER!!
I was stunned when I realized how much time had passed between the novella and the book! But those two definitely aged well, and Jackson after beeing super annoying in the past books totally sneaked up on me, I would have never thought I could like him so much!

When you read as many romance books as I do it takes a truly excellent story to hit the heights and this is that book. I loved being back amongst the Winston clan, though our leading man this time was the previously rather unloveable Jackson James. The dynamic between him and Hollywood star Rae was gorgeous and I loved the inner dialogues of the lead characters as they negotiated their way to happiness. On to the next in the series!

She’s done it again! Penny Reid has written an absolutely engrossing, masterpiece of a story!
When I initially found out Penny was writing a novel for Jackson I was so freaking pumped!!! The entire community/group of Green Valley locals and yokels have always held a special place in my heart. 😊❤️ The Winston Bros series was one of the first full series’ I ever binge read. Ahhh, memories… 😊 *wipes away tear of nostalgia* ❤️ I adore those books and they still reside on my shelves. The fact that I am able to continue to add to my Green Valley shelf is incredibly exciting! I know Jackson’s gorgeous mug will fit right in with the handsome band of bearded brothers! You know the ones! 😉😂
The fact that Penny gifted all her long time, “ride or die” readers with this amazing continuation of everyone’s favourite township was so amazing! Plus, I loved the fact that you get to revisit all the best Green Valley peoples while exploring some new faces too. I am so immensely happy I can say that “Totally Folked” will not disappoint Penny’s devoted fans!
I truly enjoyed every word in this book and couldn’t put the story down from the second it showed up on my kindle. Jackson and Rae’s story has absolutely lived up to the fantastic-ness that encompasses all the other (technically) connected stories that came before it! So perfect! 😊
Penny did a superb job of developing and describing the characters in this story, not to mention the phenomenal depicting of emotion(s) throughout every scene. As well, like with all of her written works, she kept a perfect balance between lighthearted romance and more serious and mature aspects/scenes throughout the entire story. Basically this story and these characters are superb and you need them in your life! But, I bet no one is surprised that Penny has successfully made every single Reider completely swoon over Mr. James… I’d expect nothing less from this unmatched author! 😉👌🏻❤️
To sum this review up: Jackson and Rae’s story is a must read! 👌🏻 I think this is some (only one of, because there are so many amazing Penny Reid books I can’t pick just one) of Penny’s best work yet and I HIGHLY recommend this story!
Once again, I love, love, love this story and know you will too! Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    P. S. Jackson I love you, you swoon-worthy devil! 😻 You’ve got yourself a good one Rae.😉😘

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Totally Folked is a book I read without even looking at what the story was about. Knowing it was written by Penny Reid and a spin off from the Winston Brothers was enough information for me. But I confess it took me a while to get into this story probably because I tend to steer away from books with movie stars as main characters and books with fake relationships.

So what kept me reading early on? Jackson. I was intrigued by his behaviour and his need to always do the right thing. He has an inability to ask for what he wants or needs and the more we delve into why the more my heart broke. And while I did have a good cry during part of this book it is very much a rom com..

Rae (Raquel) is a good woman even if she is a bit of a mess. I don’t blame her for escaping to Green Valley to get away from it all to get herself together. I really liked that the longer she stayed the more realised what she wanted, and what she didn't.

Rae and Jackson are a fun and sexy couple but it isn’t all smooth sailing. I loved that their friends in Green Valley kept interfering to help the couple together. Cletus Winston’s meddling in particular was just brilliant.

Jackson and Rae’s romance left me with all the warm and fuzzies. But the thing that really stayed with me was how much I enjoyed seeing Rae find a home in Green Valley not just with Jackson, the love of her life, but with new friends and good people which is just whatI want from a small town romance. This gets a solid 4 stars from me.
