Tarak
I am commander Tarak of the scourges.
When I order my crew to storm a ship, the air stinks of death and disease. The ship is filled with thin and sickly creatures that are barely capable of survival, let alone space flight. Jettisoning them all from the airlock would be merciful.
That is until a pitiful creature approaches me. Grime coats her hair and skin, and liquid leaks from her eyes. She must be infested with a disease.
There's a flash of defiance in her bright green eyes as they lock with mine, and she whispers one word that changes everything.
"Pet."
Kayla
I am Kayla, a xenobiologist on a starship from Earth. We encounter a series of mishaps—the destruction of our food supply, falling into a wormhole, and then encountering aliens, scourges, who threaten the lives of my crew.
There’s a myth; invoke an ancient word, and they may spare us. I approach the scourge commander and utter the word.
His pupils dilate into black pools, and a shiver races up my spine.
He flings a collar at me, and it clatters at my feet.
That collar represents everything I am against but wearing it could save my people.
I make a vow; I will accept the collar, but he will never own my soul.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2024'I must put a stop to this. I’m not some pet to be bought with a gentle touch. Might this be a sign that I am developing Stockholm syndrome?'
I absolutely loved this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Tarak and Kayla. When her ship is boarded by scourge and there's no way out, she calls out 'Thoth'- having heard a myth that if that word is invoked, they would be spared. What she doesn't realize it that she's volunteered herself to be a pet- which Tarak accepts once she puts his collar around her neck after he tosses it before her. I liked that he (and the others) viewed her as an actual pet in the same way we would, rather than another intelligent being. I'm so used to humans taken as slaves and having implants for communication, but we do have the language barrier here. I fell in love with Glow Ball (I want one!) And I liked the way Tarak genuinely wanted to do the very best for Kayla and keep his pet healthy. Kayla was also smart and very adaptable. I was fascinated when she met another human pet she could communicate with- as well as horrified by what was done to another by his scourge owner. I was quickly hopelessly hooked to this story.
This story ended up being so much more than I imagined. This is the first book I've read by this author and I can't wait to read more! 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024After the aliens known as the Scourge board her starship that has been lost after going through a wormhole, Xenobiologist MFC Kayla uses one legendary ancient Scourge word, Thoth, to give herself up to the Scourge Commander MMC Tarak for the lives of her crew mates.
She becomes his Pet, collar and all, now can she get him to see her as more than a pet?
The Human Pet is a nicely done enemies-to-lovers Sci-Fi Romance with good writing, adventure, angst, misunderstandings, communication issues, intrigue and excellent world building.
Kayla manages to get into plenty of trouble aboard the Scourge ship in her attempts to aid other humans they keep as pets and I enjoyed immersing myself in her adventure.
A wonderful story unfolds and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
