Traces of Magic: A Pride and Prejudice Fantasy Variation (Mr. Darcy's Magic Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 333 ratings

As long as she lived, Elizabeth would never forget the look on Darcy’s face when he saw her coming towards him.

Elizabeth and Darcy are finally settling down at the Netherfield Royal Mages Academy when a mysterious flare of magic sends them scampering to discover what is happening. But they are soon left with more questions than answers.
Why has Elizabeth’s sister Lydia gone missing? Who is the mysterious gentleman they encountered at an inn? And more importantly, why have they been summoned to London to attend to the Prince Regent himself?

As Elizabeth and Darcy grapple with unsettling revelations, they find themselves caught up in a web of deception that could lead to the downfall of the Kingdom itself.

If you enjoy your Pride and Prejudice with a twist of magic and a hint of Harry Potter, you will love following Darcy and Elizabeth’s romance in this rollicking Jane Austen fantasy adventure set in the Regency world.

Traces of Magic is the third book in the magical Mr. Darcy series. It can be read as a complete, standalone story, although it might be useful to read the earlier books.

About the Author

As a retired board-certified music therapist, licensed counselor, and veteran of the Michigan Opera and several community theaters, Jennifer Dixon has explored the power of words and music to motivate, inspire, provoke, soothe, and heal-all of which she brings to her work as an audiobook narrator. Even though she was born within the sound of Bow Bells in London England (now residing in the beautiful state of Michigan), Jennifer has a "proper old-fashioned BBC sound, with American overtones," but can conjure up her cockney side if need be!

Monica Fairview writes Jane Austen sequels and variations as well as Regencies. Her biggest claim to fame is living in Elizabeth Gaskell's house in Manchester, long before the house was restored. After studying in the USA, she taught literature, then became an acupuncturist. She now lives near London. Apart from her avid interest in the 19th century, Monica enjoys reading fantasy and post-apocalyptic novels, but avoids zombies like the plague. She loves to laugh, drink tea, and visit National Trust Properties [those were the days], and she is convinced that her two cats can understand everything she says. She is a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association.

This was borrowed through KU and I volunteered to leave a review. The views and opinions expressed are my own.

Book 3, in Monica Fairview’s Mr. Darcy’s Magic Series, is not a standalone story. It is important to read the previous books in order to have the background knowledge of what has happened and who all the major characters are. Book 3 picks up where the earlier books left off. It was a smooth transition as the story continued the magic saga that would focus on Lydia with some hints of Mary’s Talent. Both sisters were instrumental in the battle between good and evil and the threat against the King and the Prince Regent. Mr. Bennet even had a role to play as the mages fought to save the kingdom. I look forward to seeing what happens in book 4.

Ok. So I have to say I did avoid this books for a leetle while because book 1 wrecked me and I wasn't sure if I wanted that high a level of angst atm. 😅 I needn't have worried. It was nowhere near as tense.
The book almost felt like a middle of the series novella introducing Lydia and Mary into the series in that it didn't really feel like Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship moved forward at all, and we hardly saw Jane or Bingley at all. And also the war with the French went absolutely nowhere.
It was good. I enjoyed the read. It was quite clean, and the romance aspect was well done. Lydia's growth arc was good.
What bothered me was that I felt it COULD have been so much better. The world is awesome. And it feels like I'm riding through scenes on a bullet train sometimes. I'd like to be able to savor it a bit more. This is overall (excepting the Darcy and Lizzy romance, I don't think I need more page time spentnon their feelings), but especially noticeable around the magical fighting scenes and the plot building scenes between the bad guys.
Also. What happened to Mrs. Bennet being put under house arrest and charged with treason? Did I miss the spot where this was dealt with?
So that's why it's four and not five stars. I would recommend it to anyone who's read the first two books. It was a good read and worth it.

Elizabeth Darcy is at Netherfield Park with her husband, eagerly anticipating an enjoyable day of cricket when she receives this note from her father: Lydia has lost control of her magic. She has set Sir William Lucas’s barn on fire.

Well, as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. A little magical knowledge is especially so.

Lydia will be sent to Netherfield to begin her training as a Mage. Unfortunately, as Jane Austen put it: Lydia was Lydia still; untamed, unabashed, wild, noisy, and fearless.

How is such a girl to be trained?
How can Lydia go to the Meryton assembly?
How can the Mages in residence at Netherfield Park remain hidden?

Of two sisters, one is always the watcher, one the dancer. ~ Elizabeth Gluck

Unlike the first two books in the series, this one deals closely with the Bennets and the canon neighbors and visiting cads. Later in the book the Prince Regent is endangered.

Lydia keeps us guessing and Mr. Bennet has a strong part to play. It takes another Bennet sister to save the day.

It has been a while since I read the first two “magic” books and the author does not do a recap at the beginning of the book. It is a testament to the strength of the story that I did not have to re-read the first two books to make sense of this one. It does not stand alone — I recommend reading the books in order — but the plot Is memorable. I look forward to the next one!

Sister is probably the most competitive relationship within the family, but once the sisters are grown, it becomes the strongest relationship. ~ Margaret Mead

I am very disappointed that this is yet the 3rd book with no end in sight.
The first book was very well written but when I purchased it I had no idea that it would be in several parts!
Why do authors feel its necessary to divide books into so many parts??
Is it simply for the readers' money?
When I'm sure that the LAST book in this series is published then I will purchased the last book and never again will I buy from this author. I'm one of the people who like to have a Happily Ever After, which this author doesn't seem to understand the concept of The End. Very frustrating!

Book 3 is where we finally see Lydia in all her glory. After burning down the Lucas's barn, she is brought to Netherfield. Acceptance is elusive and Lydia has a secret Beau. She sneaks away and thus begins a fervent adventure, for Darcy and Elizabeth torn between trying to save her sister and stopping a plot to harm the King and Prince Regent.
No cliffhanger per se, but definitely not the end of the story. Each story seems to leave more unanswered questions. Like Bingley and Jane, and De Riquer in his new position, and Miss Bingley. Do. Any of these characters get a happy ending? Do Darcy and Elizabeth ever get to move beyond married monks?

3.5 stars really. Though this book had some very good moments, I did like episodes 1 and 2 better. Now there’s to be a 4, at least.
I did like Mary’s part in the story very much!

This story starts off deceptively slow - with a cricket match. However, it soon speeds up into an interesting story, and all of the strands are brought together before the end. Well worth reading if you have read the first two books.

2.0 out of 5 stars good writing but disappointing plot

Book 3 and I think I’m done. Monica is a great writer but needs better plotting and an editor. Too many storylines that go nowhere (remember that saying if you introduce a gun in Act 1 you need to use it in Act 3? Lizzy learns the perfect mirror trick for teletransporting but when the King is in danger and a hero is needed? She lets Darcy and her dad go ahead which she rides in a carriage). Years married and it’s still smoldering looks and no consummating the marriage (even I’m frustrated by this point), despite hearing many times there are ways to avoid pregnancy.

And worst sin of all in a book about magic is that Lizzy performs so little magic. Never something that proves to everyone what a powerful mage she is. After questioning her great acts in Book 1&2, Book 3 holds no vindication showing the Royal Mages that she deserves admiration and respect. Instead Darcy and others (mostly men) are the heroes.

I guess I’m griping because I’m frustrated. Monica really is a talented writer but so many story lines go nowhere. Where is Napoleon? Is England winning? Why introduce a new enemy when you have a perfectly good unused one? What happens with Lydia and Redmond? Jane and Bingley? Dropped magical threads.

Anyway good luck with Book 4 but I think I’m done.
