JL Merrow is that rare beast, an English person who refuses to drink tea. She read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where she learned many things, chief amongst which was that she never wanted to see the inside of a lab ever again.
She writes (mostly) contemporary gay romance and mysteries, and is frequently accused of humour. Her novel Slam! won the 2013 Rainbow Award for Best LGBT Romantic Comedy, and several of her books have been EPIC Awards finalists, including Muscling Through, Relief Valve (the Plumber’s Mate Mysteries) and To Love a Traitor.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2013I enjoyed the sweet short story. Typically JL Merrow, quirky and well written. Ted walks out of the Criterion Theatre to grab a quick cigarette and into the arms of Jem,a rent boy and back into 1886. At first Ted thinks he has stumbled on to a movie or TV set but this is real and he finds something with the rent boy missing in his life since the car accident that took the life of his husband and parents. He finds he can walk back into the theatre and back to his time but Jem draws him back. What he chooses to do and how he makes it happen is the meat of the story. Like all Merrow's work "Trick of Time" ended all too soon
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2013Losing his parents and partner in an accident 18 months ago has left ted Ennis physically and emotionally damaged. When he steps out for a quick smoke and stumbles into the late 1880's he wonders if he is also mentally damaged.
I loved this sweet and romantic time-travel/historical MM romance. This is a time travel story so you know suspension of disbelief is a given. This is also a short story which means emotions develop quickly. None of that matters though in the hand of J.L. Merrow who spins a very lovely story about two lonely souls coming together in the most unlikely way.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2013I love JL Merrow's books, and I thought this one was well written and well edited, it was on the shorter side but I could feel the chemistry between the guys. But this is one of the occassions where I thought that shorter form did not suit the story. I do like well written shorts and shorter novellas, but the love was unbelievably Insta and as much as I liked the chemistry, the ending felt a bit abrupt to me - I really do wonder if Ted and Jem will make it in the long run.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2015A sweet time traveling story, we are introduced to Ted who lost his husband and parents in a car crash. Ted is somehow sent back in time where he meets Jem. The story is nicely paced and the characters are easily likable, and while it would have been nice to know how/why Ted was being sent back the flow of the story kept it from being to big of an issue.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2013This is a beautiful love story between Ted and Jem - two men I fell for hard and fast. The details in the books brings you back to a different London, and I swear it all played in front of my eyes like a movie. Really amazing. Hot sex, too ;)

A beautiful mix of romance, time travel, and history that blends into a perfectly scripted novella of love. Some novellas could be better if they were a full length novel and some, like Trick of Time, are perfect just as they are. Times change, technology changes, inventions come and go, but as Ted and Jem discover, love is timeless and thrives no matter what the calendar says. Time travel may be more science fiction than paranormal but it's still a great addition to my Halloween shelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars Zeitreise ins viktorianische London

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it to bits!
I loved this book!
I fell in love with that characters so quickly. It's only a short story but I found myself more enamored with the characters than I had in books three times as long. The story is relatively short but I found it to be well paced and, although I would love to read more, I felt it ended well; it wasn't rushed or cut short.
It's unusual concept but I didn't find it difficult to follow or understand. The description of Victorian London was wonderful, I loved that both good and bad parts were highlighted.
Quite frankly I don't think this review seems to be doing the book any justice but look I gave it 5 stars! I loved it! Go read it now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Time travelers Husband, ish
Very nice book , enjoyed it very much.
the grime and dirt of Victorian London are acknowledged which is a nice touch.
The book is good fun, a well played out theme but still very well done.
There are some points were you think "Please" but then it is a Novel, Forgive.
Have read a few J L Mellow novels, they are a mixed bag,
White Mischief is really good.
Bolt Hole is very Nice,
Under the rushes for the most part is good, just "dizzles" a bit at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I have never reviewed a book before but just had to with Trick of Time. I fell in love with the characters and the story and hated that it ended, for me it ended too soon. I didn't want to stop reading about Ted and Jem. The plot is so original and I couldn't put it down when I started to read. I've read most of JL Merrow's work and this is my personal favourite. Honestly one of my favourite reads of all time.
