About the authors
Jaleta Clegg was born some time ago. She's filled the years since with many diverse activities, such as costuming, quilting, cooking, video games, reading, and writing. She's been a fan of classic sci-fi books and campy movies since she can remember. Her collection of bad sci-fi movies is only rivaled by her collection of eclectic CD's (break out the disco accordion polka folk music, please!).
The Fall of the Altairan Empire space opera series starts with Nexus Point. All eleven books are available. Find updates and a complete list of titles at www.altairanempire.com

Jaleta wants to be either Han Solo or Ursula the Sea Witch when she grows up. If she ever does.
She loves teaching kids of all ages about stars, constellations, nuclear fusion, space travel, mythology, writing, and rocks. She volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America among other groups. She was even on her local library board for a while. She believes in teaching people to think for themselves and to be self-sufficient. It's self-serving, though. Kids who know how to do housework, laundry, and cooking give her more time for writing.
She also detests referring to herself in the third person, but sometimes she bows to necessity.
Jeff Provine is a Composition professor in Oklahoma. His works include steampunk, alternate history, web comics, and Oklahoma folklore, especially ghost stories.
Jeanette O’Hagan enjoys writing fiction, poetry, blogging and editing. She is writing her Akrad’s Legacy Series—a Young Adult secondary world fantasy fiction with adventure, courtly intrigue and romantic elements. Her short stories and poems are published in numerous anthologies and her debut novel, Akrad's Children, and Under the Mountain novella series. Akrad's Children is included in the fantastic book bundle On the Horizon.
Jeanette has practised medicine, studied communication, history, theology and, more recently, a Master’s in writing. She loves reading, painting, travel, catching up for coffee with friends, pondering the meaning of life and communicating God’s great love. She lives in Brisbane with her husband and children.

Brent A. Harris is a two-time alternate history Sidewise Award finalist. He writes of time-traveling astronaut dinosaurs, misunderstood orcs, conflicted AIs, and a universe where Dickens meets steampunk.
When not harried behind a keyboard chugging caffeine, Brent enjoys nerdy stuff like board games, DnD, and arguing why there's still hope for Marvel movies. He holds a Masters in Creative Writing and Film from National University because the school liked his writing enough to pay for his degree.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2018This anthology is truly a real page turner, taking you by the hand and leading on an underground adventure of the dark and macabre. From a spectre lurking in the shadows waiting to feed on unsuspecting victims, a miners who can time travel as a ghost, and man with a symbiotic darkness within him that seeks to protect the woman he cares from the perils of a cursed buried city. Each story is engaging and well written that you find it hard to put it down. I highly recommend this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2018Here's a round dozen stories that run the gamut from humor to horror. For those who like stories about the darker side of life - ah, better make that AFTER-life - this anthology has a treat for every taste. And, because it's a collection of short stories, it allow readers to digest its gems at one's own pace. Highly recommended reading - just not necessarily on dark & stormy nights.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2018A wonderful collection of short stories from various authors using the theme of The Underground. Many stories took the meaning more literal than others but all embraced some aspect of dark mystery. Though I’ve read other works from some of these authors, I now have several more that I plan to follow. All the stories were well-written and very creative, though some I enjoyed more than others. That is the nature of multi-author offerings. Overall, well worth the cost with stories ranging from dark and twisted to light and humorous. Something for every taste.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2017A great collection of short stories, each unique and intriguing in their own way. My favourites are probably "The Lords of Negative Space" By Rob Edwards and "Professor Algernon Whitlock’s Exotic and Fabulous Grand Tour of the Underworld" By Leo McBride which are both real page turner! Great quality anthropology, probably my favourite with "tales of alternatives earths".
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2017A smooth collection of good, short reads. Suggested for teachers who like to read aloud to their students.
Dark tales ranging from things that go bump in the night to full on nightmarish things.
Very enjoyable and nice that the collection doesn't have to be read all at once.
Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2018One thing that stands out with regard to this book of short stories is the quality of the writing. This is a sci-fi and fantasy anthology with something to please everyone; stories to get lost in, and because of the differences in author styles I liked some more than others. Several stories could be turned into full-length novels because the tales and characters are so well-drawn.
Starting from the beginning and without including spoilers, the varied tales begin well and continue well. The first story is effective in its creepiness but with dashes of dark humour; story two is one of an alternate history and changing timelines; story three is one I enjoyed in particular for its disturbing evocation of dystopia and insanity – the excellent writing conveyed the atmosphere well. Story four is cute and clever, it draws the reader into a world where a girl has to fight for something simple that is denied to her; story five is a tale of experimentation gone wrong; story six has some wry humour regarding threat of a nuclear war; story seven has an imaginative twist on a familiar theme. Story eight enthralled me because it was so unusual, with references to Siberian mythology; story nine is enchanting in every way – I was completely captivated by the fey and it reminded me a little of Lewis Carroll; story ten was another imaginative twist on a tale from mythology, set on an alien world. Story eleven was masterfully told and an exciting account of otherworldly miners; story twelve is one of fear holding people back from discoveries that could change their lives.
As anybody can see from those brief descriptions, although one theme covers the collection as ‘Tales from the Underground’ the wide variety of interpretations creates an exciting and addictive reading experience. The book neatly showcases the different styles and talents of the contributors. It would appeal to anyone who loves sci-fi, fantasy and short stories, and I recommend it without hesitation.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2021This anthology is on the cutting edge of a genre known as subterrania, stories that take place underground.
This collection is a tour de force of the genre ranging from science fiction to fantasy to horror taking place in caves, underground bunkers, and subterranean worlds. If you like underground mysteries and adventures this collection will surely satisfy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2017Under the ground. Not my favourite thought as I am severely claustrophobic. With this in mind, I approached Inklings Press’ latest anthology with some trepidation. I was right to worry…
In Tales from the Underground there are twelve stories, most of which wrenched my guts in one way or another, but I couldn’t quit reading. Of course I liked some stories more than others, but that’s the nature of any anthology, and I can’t honestly point to any one and say it was a dud.
As all were well written it seems unfair to single out any for praise, but I’m going to anyway. My prize for addictive bleakness has to go to E.M. Swift-Hook’s Tongueless Caverns; I defy you to read that one without a shudder. I also very much enjoyed Claire Buss’ originality and sharp observation. However, if I had to nominate an overall favourite it would be The Lords of Negative Space, by Rob Edwards, it is so well imagined and mixes the mundane with the eldritch with such skill that it kept me in the edge of my seat. Oh yes!
All in all the balance of light and shade was well judged and I galloped through the book thoroughly enjoying the journey. Would I recommend it? Hell yes. Just read it. I can pretty well guarantee there is something for everybody.
Five stars and a round of applause.

5.0 out of 5 stars For me, the sign of a good book is one which inspires me to write my own stories. This collection definitely hit the mark.
I don't usually read short story collections, but this one was recommended to me by a friend, so I thought I would try it out.I am very glad I did; the stories herein had me on the edge of my seat, frantically reading as fast as possible because I had no idea what would happen next. That's one thing I found I really did like about short stories; because this was my first excursion into that universe, I had no way of anticipating what could happen next and I loved it.
The theme (Tales from the Underground) was a good one, because it explored a key liminal space in fantasy literature; the earth. I enjoyed that most of the authors didn't follow the typical fantasy 'dwarves underground' trope, but even those who borrowed from that trope did so well and in innovative ways.
As with any collection of authors, there were some I liked more than others, though I definitely came away with more to watch in the future. Some of those were surprising; although I am much more of a fantasy than sci-fi fan, I really enjoyed Jaleta Clegg's "The Angels of Mestora" and will definitely look out for more of her work. My absolute favourites though were "Shadows of the Deep" by Jeanette O'Hagan, "The Beasts Above" by Lawrence Harding, and "The Lords of Negative Space" by Rob Edwards. I will be very excited to see what else these three authors come up with!
I do really think that there is something for everyone here though. There are traditional Sci-fi and Fantasy stories, and then there are others which really twist the genres and make you laugh. A particular high point for me was "Ogon" by N. C. Stow, who was inspired by Eastern European folktales; a genre which rarely appears in mainstream literature.
My advice; it's £2.99. Buy it. It's a great read.
(So you can judge whether you may like it based on my reading tastes, my favourite authors are Robert Jordan, George R. R. Martin, Janet Edwards, and Patrick Rothfuss, to name a few!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice. Very Nice.
This arrived yesterday, and already I've read all 12 of the short stories in this anthology.. I bought it because of the excellent read that was Tales from Alternate Earths - many of the same authors are featured in this one. Like that one, this book has a wide range of stories, although this time all based around, as you might expect from the title, The Underground. Not the London Underground, just The Underground. The stories have different pacing, different styles and are in different genres as you would expect from a selection of stories from different authors - I particularly enjoyed "Underground Scratching", "Lords of Negative Space" and the final one with the grand tour of the underworld, and the very long title. There were no poor stories though - they were just the ones that stood out for me. Well worth the time and money. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD STUFF!!
There are some very nice stories within this anthology. Short stories in this genre can sometimes be unpleasant or weird but all are good here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't take caveing up as a hobby.Just don't.
What a fantastic collection of tales, all with a twist on the subterranean theme. All the stories are strong but some were outstanding. The thing in the cave,Granddad's bunker,The beasts above, and the lords of negative space are all worthy of six stars and worth the price of the book on their own.A must have for anyone looking for something different.
